Fish Oil While Bulking

Minimum is 15 a day no matter what. Right now I’m on 24 a day. 3x8 taken with meals. The one’s I take are no where near as strong as Flameout. My ones are 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA and 10mg Vit E per cap.

There’s a rule of thumb (guideline) on Fish Oil supplementation that I heard a while back, which was to increase your dosage till you find yourself having the $hits. Once you find you’re having the $hits, cut back a pill or two until you’re stable. That’s the dosage you should be taking.

I did my own market research into fish oil several years ago, thinking I could get a better bang for my buck than buying the Flameout stuff. Suprisingly, I found the quality and potency of Flameout to be better than anything else on the market, plus it’s price point actually was cheaper (for me in Canada) when I did my comparisons (e.g. a bottle of XYZ brand was of a lower quality/dosage, so to bring up to the baseline I was using, the cost was nearly double what Flameout was).

There’s also a quality issue that creeps up from time to time. I was initially taking Costco brand fish oil (prior to my above research) and found I was having a nasty case of “fish burps” all throughout the day… It was gross… It honestly felt like I hung out at the local fish and chip shop and gargle with the oil they used to do their fish up… As you move to a higher quality brand, the fish burps tended to go away…

I also take my fish oil throughout the day with meals… Same with my multi’s and several other supps…

I’ve never had any quality issues like the one’s you’ve had (burps, fish smell etc) with the brand I buy. They do a much higher strength as well, almost comparable to Flameout, but it’s expensive. And when you work out the price per mg of EPA/DHA, the one I get still works out cheaper even though I have to take 2.5 times as much.

I’ve never had any of the toilet troubles you speak of, so I’m guessing I probably can handle more. But I’m working off of a different dosing recommendation at the moment, and it seems to be working good for me.

i usually dont post here but i just thought I could share my recent fishoil experience.

a few days back I doubled my dose of Flameout- ie 8 caps in one day, just to see if i could notice an immediate difference that one day. needless to say, i felt an unusual steady energy throughout the day and an eagerness to like, you know, do stuff. i actually found myself pacing back and forth looking for things to do.

the next few days i kept the dose up to see if it was the fish oil, and the effects have still been noticeable.

if i could afford to spend twice as much on a high quality fishoil like Flameout i would keep it up for as long as i can, unfortunately having a bottle only last about 10 days just won’t be possible

I take this Carlson Labs liquid fish oil.
EDIT: it is the oil lemon flavor.

Age 67, type II diabetic, exercising for 40 years. I usually take lg of fish oil x 8 a day. I recently ran out for about 10 days. Lesson Learned. Fish oil is an Essential food, not just a supplement. Three days back on the fish oil, and I feel so much better, especially injured back, knee and hip, all joints feel better. Not taking sufficient fish oil is to limit yourself. Fish oil lowers the Glycemic Index of any meal it is taken with.

I lift weights 3 or 4 days a week followed by ellipital trainer. Walk 15 minutes after breakfast, bike 20 miniutes after supper. Sugar this AM is 102.

And yes, I still work.

If you take too much fish oil, the reduction in prostaglandins can POTENTIALLY hinder recovery since the inflammatory process is necessary to recovery, but that is just theory since it’s a rat study. I’m not sure how it would apply to trained humans, but I would bet that a moderate dose would be fine to control excessive inflammation. I suppose the definition of moderate would also depend on how hard a person was training as well as genetic, dietary, health factors, and other environmental factors which affect inflammtion.
