Fish Oil Question

I am planning on buying some more fish oil as I have recently ran out. I was taking it in capsule form; about five capsules a day. After reading Charles Poliquin’s new article, I decided that it was probably better to get it in a liquid form.

I was wondering if I should worry about the amount of omega 6 and 9 fatty acids in the oil. The brand I’m planning on purchasing contains 6.4g omega-3, 3.2g omega-6, and 3g omega-9 per serving. Does this matter much? Should I find another brand that has more omega-3 and less of the others? Do you have any websites or brands that you’d like to recommend?

Thanks in advance

Flameout. Bought here.

I was looking at the oils as well, but it turns out Flameout is about the same price per gram of DHA and EPA, and you have the benefit of added CLA. Not to mention you don’t have to drink some disgusting oil.

I just whipped out the calculator and figured that Flameout is 5x more expensive than buying this other liquid brand. I’m not the only one in my family that uses the stuff, so it would go pretty fast. $25 a bottle seems a tad steep to me right now.

Besides, after reading that article, 5 grams a day seems like a low dosage. I’d probably try to at least double it, which would mean that I’d be using one bottle every 12 days… If you’d like to wire me some money so that I can afford that, I’d be very grateful, but as for now I think I have to get cheaper stuff.

I haven’t found any fish oil that compares to Flameout in terms of EPA/DHA break down. I agree Flameout is more expensive and would like to find a brand more reasonably priced. Vitaminshoppe, where I buy some stuff, has fish oil a little cheaper. To make it comparable to Flameout I would need to take more capsules. In the long run, the money I would save is negligible, so I go with Flameout.

What brand are you looking at?

Eh, you’re logic is off. Flameout isn’t fish oil, so you can’t compare it directly.

Flameout: $0.37/g combined DHA and EPA

Typical Oil: $0.23/g combined DHA and EPA

So it appears to be 1.6 times as expensive (not 5). But this completely neglects the CLA content of Flameout, and the fact that Flameout has an immense amount of DHA as compared to EPA, which is better for men! Let’s just look at the DHA.

Flameout: $0.52/g DHA

Typical Oil: $0.58/g DHA

Man, I should be on the Biotest payroll. =)

Here I am trying to minimize the amount of Omega-6 in my diet and people actually pay to get them in capsule form…awesome.

Personnally, I prefer my Omega-9 with a bit of vinagar and garlic on a nice salad.

I dont know anybody’s thoughts on this, but considering that the occasional treat usually contains more than enough of those sadly essential omega-6, wouldn’t simply be more logical to just get supplements without omega-6 or omega-9 for that matter (olive oil is much cheaper and can taste so much better than capsules).

Anyway,

Always supprised of those 3-6-9 combos…

You can’t go wrong with Flameout. After downing 20 caps for so long, you can’t beat just four (with added CLA).

But, if you’re set on trying Poliquin’s recommendations, I’d still go with Flameout and use a liquid to finish off the rest.

Ah, now there’s a good idea. I think that might work. I’d probably cut the Flameout dosage in half so that the bottle would last longer though.

The only liquid version they have at DPS http://www.dpsnutrition.net/get_item_ud001.htm

Give your family the 20 cap a day plan and keep the Flameout for yourself…

Haha, just picked up some cheapo fish oil from Costco. I’ll probably buy some Flameout later today. Thanks for the pointers guys. Comparing the milligrams of DHA and EPA to the price really helps.

I also have a fish oil question so I’ll just put it here.

Can i just eat canned salmon a few times a day and get enough fish oil? Obviously it doesn’t have all the stuff that Flameout does, but its way cheaper.

If you look at the labels and it has enough, then I don’t see why you couldn’t use it.

I’m not sure about mercury issues with respect to salmon, but it is probably similar to tuna. This means you might want to consider limiting weekly consumption… you’d want to look into that aspect.

I think one of the selling points of Flameout, for example, is the convenience, the purity and the fact you don’t actually have to eat them as a meal.

Has everyone read the CP article? He is actually recommending 45 g per day. getting that form Flameout is mad expense. Plus the oil has the 45g in 3 TbSp. Flameout is a fantstic product and should likely be taken in addition but i think CP’s protocol is a different means to a different end. It’s the concentration he’s going for I believe.

Anyhow it is and article well worth reading. I think there is just a few slight context errors regarding the OP’s question. I do that all the time though so… for what it’s worth.

That’s what I was worried about.
I’m just going to get the liquid kind also, and take them both.

Genestra - best liquid

out of curiosity i bought some “carlson’s lemon fish oil” today. it tastes pretty much like the lemon lolli-pop’s you get from the bank.

Dude, I just literally posted the same in Poliquin’s thread! Stuff is expensive ($38.98), but the taste alone is worth it =D

Again, I would like to know why you’d take three tablespoons of fish oil over 8 caps of Flameout. When you break it down, it’s all about the EPA and DHA. Poliquin spoke only of the benefits of these two, so one would assume they are what matters.

I don’t think there’s anything particularly special about 45g of fish oil, it just happens to be the amount it takes to get 5g or so of DHA.

You do not have to take 36 caps of Flameout to get what Charles recommends.
