Fish Oil, Good or Bad for Muscle Growth?

All of a sudden, I’m hearing how that fish oil, because of its anti inflamation properties, isn’t good for muscle growth. I’ve also read in the past, that taking fish oil is great of muscle growth. NOw, i add liquid fish oil to my protein shakes every day. Should I stop doing this. This is a great way to add in extra calories. if not fish oil, then what. I don’t really want to add in tons of carbs.

Whats the final say on this fish oil deal. Does it hinder muscle growth or not. I recently read, just don’t take the fish oil immediately before or after your workout. Not sure what to do.

Study used Lovaza, a brand name fish oil from GlaxoSmithKline.

Study partly funded by Reliant Pharmaceuticals, wholly owned by GlaxoSmithKline.

Seems legit…

Hey I am from Massachusetts too. How much are you taking?. I put fish oil in a shake that i take with chocolate milk and regular milk ok… I was making good gains in strength so If fish oil was bad i would have certainly known about it. Because in addition to taking 2.5 grams per day, I eat 2 6.5oz of salmon and get a lot more omegas that way. I am not saying its a silver bullet ok but as part of a healthy eating plan it has its place and definitely didn’t stop me from getting strong and leaner.
Don’t worry about it its a good source of omegas and we as a population don’t get enough of them so… Once you see your doing ok getting stronger and feeling good and putting on some muscle that’s proof enough. Personally I don’t think there is any food that is going to prevent putting on muscle. If you stimulate the muscle by lifting heavy 85% and above you will be giving the big muscle fibers what they need to grow. Together with attention to your central nervous system and getting 8 hours sleep a nice or enough so you’re not tired the next day, you will do fine. Plus your not an old dude like me so lol

Well, I had liquid fish oil to my morning, afternoon and 5pm shakes. so Id say about 10 grams per day.

I was clear in that other thread that it was conjecture.

We do know that a large dose (but not a small dose) of OTC pain meds (NSAIDS) soon after a w/o is hindering of muscle growth. This is probably via anti-inflammation effect, indicating that some inflammation post-w/o is necessary for hypertrophy.

However, we also know that 1) inflammation everywhere all the time is definitely bad, and 2) omega-3 from fish oil is very healthy, partly because of its anti-inflammatory action.

Again, to engage in conjecture: it may not be a good idea to have omega-3 in the post w/o period; but even if so, you should not avoid them completely, as they are “essential” (necessary for health).

10 g every day is a pretty high dose.

Two other things that are inflammatory: lifting and eating.

Yeah 10 grams is a lot…Do you get blood test done? I bet your triglycerides are low… Do you have heart disease? Are you making gains in muscle mass and or strength? and I agree we are in an area that we just don’t know how they effect or have an effect on muscle hypertrophy. But agreed we do need them for good health body doesn’t make them on its own have to come from food or supplementation

I’m with “the Troy” on this one. Avoid fish oil immediately pre & post-workout as it’s a fat, but don’t refrain from consuming. Thinking about it in simple terms (and without considering all the health benefits to make it an essential supplement), fish oil is a blood thinner and blood thinners improve blood flow. Better blood flow = faster repair, and better circulation to muscles.
All the best!

Really… REALLY? Come on man, this is why everyone gives you so much flak. You act like a know it all and then ask a fairly elementary question.

If you are worried do what I do Rogue and just take it at a time furtherest between workouts. So for me around lunch time most days. Hopefully this is sufficient to have an effect on systemic inflammation whilst enough time to allow normal workout responses to occur unhindered. I certainly cant drop fishoil entirely as my joints start acting up fairly quickly.

Heh, that’s well said.

And in keeping with that big-picture theme, muscle growth can’t ever be wholly divorced from general health, longevity. As least as far as reasoned foresight is concerned…

+1. Last time I ran out of fish oil, I waited to see how long before its absence became noticeable.

In my experience, that took all of 5-6 days.

This is something ive only heard recently.

I experimented wit 4 tbs of carlsons a day — it made me flat as pancake, lowered vascularity and my normal “round” muscular look went to hell…

I then switched to pure egg yolks, red meat and PB and in 7 days I was full, and popping again.

So — NEVER mega dose, just take a normal healthy dose for general health.

Curious what your opinion of a daily healthy dose is?

I don’t think you have to worry about fish oil and gains being decreased. If you want proof of this, there’s an article by SilverHydra all about fish oil and it’s myostatin blocking properties.

look at the dha/epa content
Probably 1.5-3g of that

What I meant was some recommend anywhere from 3g total fish oil (1g O-3’s) to 5g total OMEGA 3’s. I am wondering where he, Matt specifically, stands on the spectrum.

Only negative finding ive seen is the possible negative impact of taking fish oil after a workout. Otherwise taking fish oil not around your workouts is good. Anti-cortisol, anti-estrogen, decrease fat, increase lbm, faster recovery, etc…

However if your looking to add calories to your shakes why not just use olive oil/coconut oil/etc…?

4 TBSP? that’s a shit load dude, 60g… JB’s recommendations are a max of 30g for 4 weeks then cut in half depending upon body fat levels

4 tbs isn’t alot at all. There is no way on earth the fish oil is what caused that. There is no basis in fact at all. I guarantee something else you were doing caused that. Don’t you think if fish oil caused people to lose muscle or pump, we would have been hearing about all the time, given how many bodybuilders use fish oil. 4 tbs is not alot my man. Not alot at all.
