First Set Last for 1 Set for AMRAP or

I just want to hear from people that have used both FSL for 1 AMRAP set vs multiple sets of 5-8 reps, the Beyond 5/3/1 book mentions both but I want to hear if either one is preferable based on your experiences.

Neither is better, just different. Do one and then switch.

I prefer the single set all out - however I often use FSL for dynamic work and then you do 5x5 or 8x3. The thing is I have a hard time setting PRs with FSL - especially if I’ve set one on the top set. So I use it in a way I think it will help me personally…i.e. dynamic effort per the book. I always use them though - in 1 form or another.

Each lift and each cycle may need a different RX. Be open to all.

Hi Jim,

I know this is an older post, but i like to reuse…

When you said: “Be open to all”
Would this include combining the FSL set options?
For example, including an AMRAP with a 3x5 rep scheme (i.e. 2X5, 1XAMRAP)?

I’ve found I do better with multiple FSL sets so far. It’s a weakness on my part, but I find it hard to keep focused on an AMRAP set after pushing for a PR on my plus set. With multiple sets I don’t have that issue.

If you want - all areas must be accounted for. So account for that in conditioning, assistance, etc .

Jim,

Thanks for your response! I guess I will mess around with the different FSL options and see what works. To be honest, I think it might be a bit taxing to hit two AMRAP set in a row-regardless of the lower weight being used with FSL. I think I will just stick with 3 sets of 5-8 reps and just do what feels right - I’m leaning toward 5.

BTW, your high school number, #44? Was that a homage to Tom Rathman? I watched your interview on Barbell Shrugged and you mentioned your respect for him. Just wondering if you pick that number because of him…

Thanks again!

I prefer multiple sets for deads (6x3, 5x4, etc), a few sets, then an amrap for squats (3x5, 1xAMRAP), and an all out rest pause for ohp and bench. (Usually reaching to touch 20-30+ reps total) Should also note that I do everything paused for the most part as well except for the amrap squat. I would just try both and figure it out as broad and repetitive as that sounds. Everyone is different.
