First Contest ~ My Prep Log

Alright well, I don’t have a weight update at the moment, as I’m trying to focus on the diet, the cardio, the lifting protocol, and the mirror. So, I’m not looking at the scale more than once per week for a while.

Today was chest shoulders and triceps.

I’m still fighting back from my shoulder injury, which is limiting my chest development & bench numbers. That said, I think my shoulders are really rebounding. The shoulder strength is a far cry from where I was (especially with Overhead Pressing), but the overall mass, and aesthetics seem to be improved. I think this is a simple function of focusing on the rear delts.

As to a general quality, there is definitely more muscle separation in the shoulders than was there previously. It’s kind of freaky to do a front lateral raise in the mirror (and watch each muscle band contract and release underneath the skin). It reminds me of the time I broke my arm, and could see the broken bone moving around underneath the skin ~~~ thankfully I passed out before I was able to contemplate it too long ~~~~ ahhh memories from 1979 ~~~~ Anyway, I digress. Anyway, I tried to get a pic, but the only thing that was coming through on the camera were the abs ~ which I think are looking better also.

My abs were sore for some reason, so I put on my Inzer Forever Belt to try and get some additional support. This was an eye opener. I haven’t worn that belt in months ~ since I quit deadlifting. Anyway, I’m smaller by three belt holes, and currently in the last one ~~~ meaning if I get thinner, I’m going to have to make a new hole to accommodate my smaller waist… lol

Along those same lines, last Friday was my last day in long pants until mid September. It’s a good thing, because none of my pants fit me anymore. BTW, people ask me how I get away with wearing shorts 6 months out of the year. I always answer, that I picked a career that allowed for a casual dress code. The luxury of owning your own business ~~~~ of course, when the company doesn’t make any money… you don’t get paid either, so I guess it’s a fair trade-off. Here’s my company website if you’re interested in my 'professional occupation: www.ClockWorkMath.com (I help students improve their college entrance (SAT/ACT) scores by showing them how to do all of the math on the SAT & ACT with 4th grade math instead of algebra. It’s a pretty neat way to spend the day.

As to what’s been on the menu: Talipia ~~~~ the official diet meat of the week. I wonder if my mercury levels are off the chart because I’m basically eating two 6 oz fillets a day.

As to my carbohydrate source, I must say that Oatmeal is still doing it for me. Today I mixed in some P-nut butter with the lunch portion ~ wow, the Lord did a good thing when he made the p-nut. They have 1,001 uses. Toss in some raw green beans, lettuce, boiled eggs, and tuna fish, and you’d have a pretty good representation of everything I’ve been eating lately.

I’ve got biceps and traps tomorrow, as well as 1 hour of cardio. Hopefully it’ll be sunny, and I can work on my tan ~ these pasty pictures are killing me…

This last picture is definitely your best yet. I can’t comment on if you’ll be ready for the show you original planned on attending, but the progress you’ve made is astounding!

In case anyone is interested ~ here is my home gym…

There is a chin up bar suspended over the camera (it is suspended by a chain, so it has a different feel to a chinup bar that is bolted down).

I need another Oly Bar ~ so that I don’t have to take the bar that I use for t-bar rows & deadlifting and put it on the Sumo Rack… Actually I really don’t need the bar, because I keep forgetting that I haven’t squatted in 5 months, and my shoulder is really limiting my barbell overhead pressing. So… “Used Sumo Rack For Sale ~ $400” ~ lol

Thanks Kravi!

Cardio ~~~~~

I had been sporatic, but I doing it most days now ~

My cardio is broken down into 3 categories: steady state cardio (elleptical or walking), sprint intervals, and body weight complexes.

Steadystate Cardio is looking for a home right now. I think I need a near daily approach with these. I’m thinking of putting them ahead of breakfast so it would be “fasted cardio.” 20 - 30 minutes.

I’m doing my intervals on flat field that ends in a hill. The interval is a classic 80/20 training situation. 80% is a light jog leading to the hill & the 20% is the sprint up the hill. The total effort is about 20 seconds, the rest is the time it takes to walk back down the hill, and across the field to the starting point, I ran 10 hills last time. I plan on doing these Tuesdays & Thursdays while my kid is in gymnastics.

The bodyweight complexes are cool.
Here was the one I did yesterday:
Squat =>Vertical Jump Cycle with hands interlocked behind head (continuous plyometric feel to it)
Spiderman Pushups
Jumping Lunges
Push-up => Plank=> Pushup
Mountain Climbers

12 reps per exercise.

The exercises are performed as a giant superset (so there is no pause between the squat & the pushups, etc.). After you complete the Mountain Climbers, you rest for 90 seconds and repeat the set again (3 sets total).

Today is my leg day ~~~~ so I think I should have probably done the Complex I have planned today yesterday instead. Today’s Complex will be upper body/ arms & Ab stuff.

Bench Dips
Chinups
Push Ups
Push Press
Barbell Rollouts (Abs) ~ 5 reps only

I’m going to stick with the 12 reps per exercise & 3 superset formula.

The fact that these body weight complexes are body weight activity is appealing ~ and since the weight is not significant, I don’t think it will have any impact on my other workouts ~ at least that is what I’m hoping.

Best,
J

Wheels ~~~~~

Jumped on the scale this morning ~~~~ 193.7 lbs. Doing my best to take it in stride… still a long way to go.

Today is Leg Day ~~~~~

Okay ~ well things continue in a positive direction. Over the weekend I was cleaning out an old drawer of clothes and found a pair of shorts I had not worn since 1989 ~~~~~ they fit.

Today is Chest & Shoulders ~~~~ I’m starting to work in some of the John Meadows ideas ~ my main take away is that he recommends a lot more volume than I’m currently doing. I’ll be really interested in seeing how my shoulder responds. It is still having its “good days and bad days.”

Also regarding the "Reactive Pump training: I like his idea of having a “pure arm day” ~ but wish I could somehow get it set up in a 6-day split as opposed to a 5-day split.

It’s a shame that 190 isn’t my target weight ~~~ because I’m at 192 lbs today ~ and 3 weeks out.

Today is Arm Day ~~~~~~ In the last month especially, I have noticed relatively significant strength gains in the arm department, but there is no change in circumference. Perhaps I’m not holding my mouth right ~ lol

I’m the last person in the world to give advice on bodybuilding, so I won’t  But have you thought of changing up how you train arms?

I’ve been cutting weight since last fall, so I’m not sure they would grow at a caloric deficit regardless of what I do in the gym.

That said, I’ve tried lots of things ~~~~ working them 1 x per week, 2 x per week, 1 x every 10 days, 1x every other week, etc.

This past week, I’ve transitioned to John Meadows Reactive Pump Plan 1.1 (last night was arms). In this program, it looks like you only work arms 1 x per week, but there’s a lot of volume. In fact, 12 sets of biceps and triceps supersetted together is a bit more volume than I’ve been used to. Also, I haven’t really ever had a day dedicated solely to arms ~ so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Upon conclusion of the workout, I taped my arms because I felt like I had a nice pump. I got a 16.25" inch measurement (which is a .25" increase over where they had been) ~ maybe some small progress? Who knows?

The contest is June 15 (so 11 days from now). I’m at 190 lbs currently.

I think I will be at 189 by this Saturday, and possibly 188 by next Saturday.

That said, I’m not sure I’ll compete. I may change my mind though because there’s a whole lot of progress to be proud of; just not enough to really put me in a competitive “stage ready” light.

My current cut represents a drop of 35 lbs since last summer ~ and 40lbs from my high point (though I did not consider myself ‘fat.’). My abs are showing really well, but my lower back is not very lean at all.

I’ve read were other people on the forum have alluded to similar situations ~~~~ eg: “You’ll know you’re contest ready when your back leans out.”

Is it correct to assume that the lower back is the “last area” to cooperate with the diet?

As to diet: Chicken, Eggs, P-nut butter, & Oatmeal are my diet staples. It’s not bad, quite filling, and not all that expensive (especially the oatmeal).

Actually, when I look at my condition right now, I liken it to the guys that are reporting the beginning of their contest prep phase and are 12 weeks out.

There are some other contests later in the summer ~ so if I compete in 11 days it would just be a “trail run” on the way to getting into a better condition.

I’ll post a few posing pics to solicit some feedback later today, or first thing tomorrow.

Best,
J

Disregard the legs… was not flexing them.

Okay ~~~~ what are your thoughts about the contest in 11 days?

To compete or not to compete that is the question.

If there still is the mental option not to compete, then take this as a learning experience and regroup.

Thanks for the input. I don’t feel like I “have” to compete in the June 15 Contest. It was my initial goal, but the better goal was to compete in a contest (not necessarily in that one).

It’s all a learning experience at this point. lol

If there is a contest further out, then I feel that would be a better choice.

At your present level of development, you really would need to come in as hard as possible, since you cannot play the size game (right now at least). Don’t get caught up in number watching, just focus on the look.

Also, different people lean out from different areas at different rates. Some use hamstrings or lower back christmas tree to determine that, others use veins in the abdomen or even how the skin rebounds when pulled. Just keep posting the pictures and I am sure we will let you know.

Great progress iplan! I have to agree with Myosin that you would probably be best served to choose a contest at a later date in the summer. If finances aren’t an issue, and there are several close together, I would recommend doing 2 or 3 shows. Your first will be a learning experience no matter what, so having a second and possibly third contest will give you a chance to put to use and make any necessary changes to your posing, nutrition on the day of show, carb intake, etc, whereas if you are disappointed in a particular aspect of your presentation/preparation the day of your only contest, it will be tough to not be frustrated and feel that you didn’t get to present the physique you were truly capable of. Also, regarding nutrition, what are your current macros? Looking through your thread, I haven’t seen much talk of your macro breakdown, just of your food choices.

While lowering portion sizes and eating “clean” foods will get you beach lean, to get to a true level of contest conditioning you will need to be very focused and precise with your macros, rather than just eat “less oats,” “less fish”, etc. If this is not how you’ve been making dietary adjustments, then disregard my statements!

Anyway, great progress so far my friend, and good luck the rest of the way!

@ Myosin ~ I’ve looked at the later contests in my area, and there is one on August 10th (it is sponsored by the NPC ~ which I think is under the IFBB).

Just out of curiosity, what if I just “lived” on the treadmill until June 15? Would that be a bad idea and how much weight could I realistically cut in doing that?

@PWolves: As to my “Macros” ~ well I must admit that I’m really not sure. I’ve been following Swolle’s suggested diet for me (see page 2) ~~~ I’m not really sure what the breakdown is, and I guess I need to figure that out at some point.

This is always a bad idea IMO.

Focus on a show later in summer and keep working on dialing it in.

Thanks Mr. McBride!
