I would think that I would be drinking that much too, but I’m going to fill a gallon container tomorrow and get an accurate assessment.

BTW, what was your weight in your avatar?[/quote]

170 pounds

Cool ~ I think we may have similar builds.

Water intake yesterday was just over a gallon, but it was probably a bit more than I normally drink. I’ll try to keep it at the same level today.

Injury bug is still biting the crap out of my left quad ~ it’s been two weeks, but size is holding steady at 25.25 (cold). I was able to hit the hamstrings & calves last night.

Best,
J

I am curious to see what happens as you keep water intake at this level.

Today is Saturday ~ exactly 11 weeks from contest date (June 15).

My weight this morning was 198.4 lbs, so this is good movement in the right direction. I have really been learning a lot about diet since my initial post here, and with all of your help, have arrived at something I can maintain.

My original target was 190 lbs, but after hearing your comments I think I might need to lose another 10lbs more. Based on the amount of time I have left, it looks like I need to be losing just over 2 lbs per week.

Is this too quick a schedule? Like Stu said in an earlier post on the this thread, “you want to actually have a physique when you get there.”

There are 3 NPC events in my state that are a bit further out (August, Sep, & Oct). I may add them, and just consider the June 15th contest as a “test run” ~ along the way to another contest.

Today’s workout is Back and Biceps.

BTW, I was recently looking at the back workout in Ryno’s Competition Thread, and could not believe the volume he is doing. That type of volume would bury me in short order.

Today’s scheduled workout will be:

Chinups 5x10
1 Arm DB Rows 3x12
T-Bar Rows 3x10
Cross Face Hammer Curls 3x10
EZ Curl Bar 2x max

2 pounds per week is very doable.

I sure hope so. Since I started following Swolle’s “outline” (I think it’s on page two of this thread, I’ve been dropping 2lbs a week on average) ~ so hopefully it will continue.

Also, from what I’ve seen a lot of the Masters guys (40-50 age group) don’t really get as fit as they do in the open classifications. I’m basing this on many pictures I’ve seen from local shows as I look around the web. I’ve attached a picture of one of the competitors in last year’s event NPC Event in Charleston, SC. The guy certainly has some potential n my mind, but he really needs to improve his conditioning. This type of competitor seems to be typical of the local masters field. Am I wrong in my assessment?

As for me: today is chest, shoulders, & triceps day.

Flat Bench 10x10
Incline Bench 3x12
Shoulder Rehab Protocol (about 6-8 different shoulder exercises ~ mainly hitting the rear delts ~ all done as a giant superset)
Cable Press Down (rope & flat bar ~ as a super set) 5x10
Bench Dips 2xmax

I’m curious to see how my bench responds to a week off. I think a little rest has done my shoulder some good. It certainly feels great right now. Hopefully it will feel the same way tomorrow.

Best,
J

Holy hell that guy looks like shit.

Can’t wait to see you cut to ribbons and blowing guys like him away haha

Thanks rattlehead!

BTW, I’ve concluded that my wife is not a bodybuilder picture taker ~ though she has myriad other priceless talents.

Anyway, I really want to do a better job of documenting my progress in this thread with periodic photos, but have no way of doing it well.

Has anybody figured out a way to take pictures of yourself posing without also holding the camera also?

Set your phone or camera up somewhere to film you in good lighting and run through your posing routine, gives you practice and you can use the still images from it for progress.

Man why didn’t I think of that before!

While I’m asking questions: I somehow subscribed to a category I have no interest in, and can not figure out how to unsubscribe. My email is getting flooded with “category updates” ~~~~ it’s driving me crazy.

Whoah, that guys looks uh… not-good. I’ve been at many amateur shows where the Masters winners easily place top 3, occasionally even winning the open class as well. Google some pics from INBF (an amateur federation) shows and you’ll see what I mean. Sure there will sometimes be the older guy who loves training and decides to step out onstage for fun, but very often you’ve got guys who have been competing for years, and the experience levels really shows with their conditioning (size is a hit or miss as you age though).

Always better to expect better competition and prepare for it than to expect a walk in the park, and get run over.

Man ~ this Sunday’s re-feed was freaking me out. On Monday, I was 205 (7 pounds heavier) than I was on Saturday…

I started to panic, but figured/ hoped/ and prayed that all my hard work would not have been washed up by a simple cheat day… Anyway, last night got on the scales (body weight was 205 again). Had it not been so late, I would have really been concerned… Got on the scales this morning (8 hours later), and was surprised that I had dropped 4.5 lbs ~~~~

I do not understand how this works, but I’ll take it. To hit my 2lb per week target, I need to be at 196 by the end of the week.

Today is lower body. I’m pretty stoked about my lower body routine now that I have kicked squats to the curb, and legs are still growing. I’m hoping for a measurement of 26" - 26.25" pumped. When cold, quads are 25.25" - 25.5."

Soooooooooooooo ~~~~ 10 weeks out now. Weight came in at 197.5 (only a 1 pound drop from the previous week). I was hoping for 2 lbs.

If I am able to hit the 2 pound per week number, I’ll still be coming in at 177 based on current weight. I was thinking of adding a bit of cardio to try and distribute the pressure of losing weight by diet alone. I’ll wait another week just to see. I think I overdid that re-feed last week.

Today is Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps (it’s also a make up day for legs ~ as my back was tight yesterday, so I skipped me leg workout)

Flat Bench: 10x10
Incline Bench: 3x20
Shoulders: Still rehabing with therabands ~~~~~ (and it’s sore pre-workout ~~~ Aikido is a rough on previously injured shoulders).
Shrugs: 3 x max
Hack Squats 5x15
Stiff Leg Deadlifts 5x20
Calves: 3 x max

bro post maor photos.

Agreed ~~~ but it’s out of my control, as I’ve got some technical difficulties with the BlackBerry & sending posing videos to some place other than youtube. It seems I do not have an option to email the video to myself ~

I can say that I’m not looking anywhere near close to being contest ready at this point.

BTW tonight’s workout stunk! Making up legs day on chest day was necessary but it reminded me why I went to a 5 day split…

Mark Rippetoe’s articles are always so motivating ~ Every article I read, (this one is no exception: Rippetoe Throws Down ) I think, “I need to start squatting hard again.” ~ but I know that that movement never delivers positive results over the long term for me. My focus is on rehabing a bad shoulder, an often strained left quad, and a near perpetually herniated L-5. These really limit my Bench & Overhead Press, Squat, and Dead-lift respectively ~~~~

Plus my arms need a lot of attention!

Today was the “official leg day.” It went well.

Hack Squats 5 x 20 (really high reps)
Reverse Lunges: 3x12
Stiff Leg Dead Lifts 5x20
Calves: 3xmax

Then I did about 15 min of low intensity cardio.

The dull ache in my shoulder tells me it will rain tomorrow. Working on the “Americana Arm lock” in GJJ tonight did nothing to improve the weather forecast either.

Are you a wizzard?

You havent updated any progress shots yet? I know you mentioned you finally started to see the weight move, is it showing in the mirror?

Waittz ~~~ Dude that is the coolest avatar I think I’ve ever seen!

This whole picture taking thing is really odd. As the camera never captures what I see in the mirror, and I’m always holding the camera ~~~

That said, I’m putting up a “Beginning of Cut to Now” in the next post.

The beginning of the desire to cut: Here I’m at 225 in October 2011. I had no clue about diet, though, and stayed at 225 until about the same time in 2012 ~~~ so it’s pretty much a good indication of where I was last fall.
