Finger Pushups

Juat curious, I remember seeing them in a video of some martial arts deminstration. Any point is really doing these, or are they just on the verge or stupidity bc of the weird angle they put your fingers at, or can they actually help to strengthen them?

they also punch trees to strengthen their knucles. they are both damaging to your hands.

Figured, Bruce Lee just had his regular bad ass moves, meh doesn’t matter.

For some athletes strengthening the hands and fingers are of great importance. Someone brought up Bruce Lee. Bruce actually spent a lot of effort developing his forearms and grip strength. The reason is that in punching and gripping movements the hands and forearms are the transfer point for the energy.

This is also true of many sports. Consider baseball. It does not matter how strong and fast an athlete is, with a weak grip he will never efficiently transfer the energy to the bat.

The question remains if pushups on fingertips really help to develop hand strength. I would think they would be useful as long as they are not taken to an extreme and cause injury. Deadlifts are a great exercise in developing grip, finger, and overall forearm strength. I am sure I am not the only one that has felt the burn in the hands and forearms holding the bar!

For many athletes fingertip pushups are probably a waste of time, because there are more useful ways to develop the necessary strength for their particular sport. For certain combat sports they may be appropriate. Just like anyone other exercise, I would think they are useful for some and garbage for others. Just my 2 cents.

my baseball team used to do them when we worked out in the winter in the gym

Interesting interpretation, and while I agree that finger and grip strength is important, finger pushups do not seem to increase your finger strength at all imo. Deads seem the popular choice for increasing grip strength, but for me power and hang cleans have done the best for my grip.

Jack Black, I guess.

In my MA group we do finger-tip pushups so that we can jab people in the throat without jarring our fingers. I can’t really imagine any other purpose for them, other than slightly increasing ROM.

note to self…

don’t fuck with Kaylak.

Aside from finger strength, they build pain tolerance and perseverance, important components of weightlifting or just about any sport. Knuckle pushups on concrete can also suffice.

For strict strength training purposes, they’re probably low on the list of bang-for-your-buck exercises.

Guess I grew up in the bruce lee days when all kids did these after watching some kung fu flick.

If you can do them, and you are doing pushups, then why not?

Someone said they do not build finger strength. That is crazy, since people don’t do finger weightlifting they are pretty much the only exercise that will build finger strength. Deads do build grip strength but notice the difference (…Finger…Grip). Two different things. Only problem is not many uses outside of striking for strength required to keep your finger straight.

They are excellent when you jam your finger playing basketball. Most people know it can take months to heal a finger if left alone. Finger pushups everynight they will heal in less then a week.
