Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

Veggie,

I have had unbalances hips in my past, and what helped me was one-arm suitcase deadlifts. I think one of the best exercises for activating one side of the torso, including some of the deep muscles like the quadratus lumborum, while also getting the entire posterior chain on one side. This is fucking BRUTAL.

No, this is not me doing the exercise, but it is my old weight room.

I did try the Jandas again but hooked my legs over two kettlebell handles and that worked better. I could do a few (3 or 4) before I died. I think my rings are a little too high - couldn’t keep my feet on the floor. You’re right though, they are tough.

I think the guy benching with his oxygen on is just about the most inspirational thing I’ve heard of in awhile. Geez, talk about overcoming setbacks and continuing to strive for your goals despite all odds. Imagine how it feels to him to walk into a weight room with an oxygen tank? And him not giving a fuck and doing it anyway?

Way to go, dude.

“janda’s?” “electric blue 'kinesio-tape?” "Nooners?? “purple thongs?” what the hell is going on in here? is this some sort of secret vegitarian cult ritual for getting sexy-huge  I want in!!! IF I can still sneak a steak now and then…

Breakfast w/my mom and sis. Omelette w/ spinach and feta and a hash brown. Went shopping and got some new gym tops on clearance. A couple of my faves have been super tight around my traps for a while, like a couple years. I know, it’s pathetic. Anyhow, I also picked up a piece of resistance tubing. I figured that I could use it for a bunch of stuff. It is marked 50 lbs, doesn’t really mean much to me, I mean I understand the concept of tubing, but I always just used them by feel. Picked out the one that I bought more for the color. It is a nice fiery bright orange. One of my favorite colors.

Training: chest/back

Warmed up w/tubing; Pull-aparts, stretching out my shoulders

BP: 1x5xbar, 1x5x65, 1x5x75, 1x5x85, 1x5x95, 2x3x105, 1x2x110, 5 singles @ 110, 1x3x110 (ass came off bench on second rep)

DB incline press: 3x6x40’s (tried to go up to 45’s on second set, wished I had a training partner right about then, failed)

Went into the fitness room and set up a circuit:
Rolling medicine ball pushups, standing single-arm MP w/30 lb DB, decline pushups from step w/7 risers, resistance tubing pull-aparts
Did it 3 times: 10/5 each arm/10/20 (I was pretty pumped afterwards, I really love pushing myself w/shit like this. Unfortunately my right wrist started acting up a tad.)

OH DB carries w/30 lb DB:
1x~100 ft both arms, 1x~ 100 ft cross-carry, 1x~100 ft single-arm, repeat; 10 total carries (after these my shoulders were burning-nice)

Lateral raises: 2x8x20’s, 1x6x20’s (still burning, but I knew I still had a little left in me)

BB front raise 3x5xbar

After that my whole shoulder girdle was feeling nice and hot. I was also very much ready to eat. Kale w/garlic, 3 eggs scrambled w/skim milk. scallions, gorgonzola cheese, some goat cheese and walnuts while I was cooking, 2 little dinner rolls that my gran made, big bowl of home-made vegetable soup. I’ll probably have a protein shake before bed. Today is just one of those hungry days:)

Max -

I DIG the suitcase DL -

I am going to HAVE to incorporate them!

Oh, and Hi Veg -

I dig the blue tape too~

Sorry, I got a little excited from seeing the vid Max posted (that didn’t really sound right, did it?

Yup, thanks Max. I’m planning to do some suitcase DL tonight.

Thanks all: N8, Nadia, kimba, honey pie, Cal, nlmain, masch, german, Bre, Edgy… hope I didn’t miss anyone

I had an awesome weekend. Training was solid. Feeling good and well fueled for today. Going to work for a the afternoon/evening and then heading to the gym for my leg training. I’m hoping that my brother is going to join me. He’s been through it the last several years and is now in recovery and in the process of rebuilding his life.

He played hockey and was a superstar lacrosse player back in h.s., but hasn’t lifted since then. Admittedly, he hasn’t the first clue of where to start in the gym, so I told him that I’d help him get started. I’m thinking a total body program, 3-4 times a week for a couple months is probably about right. Any thoughts?

That sounds right, make sure he gets the movements down a 100% and go easy on him Veg - dont send him screamin for your mom in the first week  (btw you already know all this I am just sayin’ it)

oh yeah! suitcase dls are GREAT for your obliques, word up :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’d say three times max, maybe even twice the first couple of weeks, until he gets used to it. If you’ve not done weights for a while the DOMS can last for days. Don’t want to scare him off!

Hm…suitcase DLs…interesting…good to know!

You’ll get those 45s next time - but yeah, a spot would be nice. I find that once the DBs are up I can rep em pretty good, so a spot is def helpful.

Fuck yeah for feeling good!! Grip and rip bitch!

Hey Veg, nice log you have going here. Yes, PL can be quite fun!!

I have to look up Janda’s too, I’m getting bored with ab work, so I will definitely try these, not that I really care about a six pack, lol. But strong core always wins with heavy squats.

Tonight’s training: legs/lower

Warmup: wall squats, spiderman crawls

Squat: 1x5xbar, 1x5x95, 1x5x105, 1x5x115, 1x5x125, 1x5x135, 1x5x145, 1x5x155, 1x4x165, 185 single

RDL: 1x5x135, 1x5x185

Some guy was waiting patiently for the squat rack, so I moved to an open area that is an unofficial DL area. There is pretty much always a bar w/some plates loaded on it just sitting there. I pulled the 45’s off and loaded !0 on each end and set up to attempt the suitcase DL. Trying a new exercise is always something that I approach w/full determination to master it no matter what. I had a hell of a time figuring where to stand. The weight was not particularly challenging, but positioning my self to execute it really was a motherfucker. My low center of gravity wasn’t as useful.

Suitcase DL: 25? 30? per side (not sure, I didn’t try to count but it was very many) x 65

By the time I was done I was sweaty and cursing and people were staring at me because I was making a bunch of noise. Oh well  I had a good time figuring it out. After that I felt compelled to do something that I was sure I could do right. I’ll admit that I was a little frustrated by the suitcase DL experience so…

DB walking lunge: 3x6 (per leg) x50’s

I truly love walking lunges. They have always been one of my “go to” exercises. Guaranteed to always leave me sucking wind w/a big grin on my face. I was pretty spent after those, so I went home.

I was pleased w/myself. I did some tough, high intensity stuff and something totally new.

Also, the kinesiotape made a difference. I felt WAY more balanced when I was squatting. I’m encouraged by how I felt tonight. Good stuff.

great training. first i’ve heard about kinesiotaping… interesting…

Glad that you enjoy the lunges, as you know it is the one exercise I try to avoid - but have been shoving it down my throat lately. good Workout!

Good stuff with the suitcase DLs. I considered doing them yesterday, however, I settled for conventional. I’ll probably toss them into my morning mix.

I tried suitcase DL’s a while back; maybe I’ll do that again. Nice squats too!

Is the tape used for Kinesiotaping hypoallergenic? I’m interested to try it but regular tape gives me a rash.

I ordered a roll of hypoallergenic tape, got it on Friday, but have yet to try it on anyone. A couple of patients have expressed interest, but have the same problem: rash, itching, etc. Just a matter of time before one of those folks comes back in and we get to try it out. I’ll let you know how it goes. FYI the products we use are from Spidertech, the hypoallergenic is called Spidertech Gentle. Also, all of their products are latex-free.

Brute, Masch, Beast, Alisa- the suitcase DL have definitely made the cut, I’ll keep them in the rotation for a while; they’re challenging=fun for me

Masch- just gonna grab some meathead to help me get those 45’s up next time, I miss having my bf as a training partner when I need a spot (otherwise not much, he tries to get bossy and change my programs, etc)

lil power- thanks! I <3 janda’s and I don’t care about six-packs either

alexus- thanks! Kinesiotape is fun, it taps into my crafty side when I’m applying it OTJ and really seemed to make a difference for me personally when I was lifting last night. Bonus: it comes in different colors!

Oh, Cal & N8tive- thanks for the input re: my bro. He bailed on me last night. He’ll come around. Hope it’s soon:)
