Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

Well, hello gorgeous!

My farmer’s market starts next week and I’m very excited! I have a turquoise cruiser bicycle with white flowers painted on the frame, and a milk crate mounted on the back rack – this is my going-to-market ride. Time for some local veggies and fruit.

Ooh! I got almost the exact same veggies from my CSA, but no onions yet. Today I headed to the CSA farm and picked a bunc of sugar snap peas. Can’t wait to make a mean stirfry with the peas and the Pak choi!

Yeah, I’m alive and well… just busy and being lazy about posting my training. In addition to my day job, my pet sitting business is in high-gear at the moment. Wrapped up a week-long gig on Sun. This week I have a dog to stay with for 4 days and this weekend a sick cat to care for-- she has an ear tumor and I have to put drops into her ear! And she has claws! She’s a pretty ‘cool customer’ but we’ll see…

And a sad and strange turn of events led to us losing a family member last week. My brother’s dog-- the one who was propositioned while I walked him through the streets of Trenton, NJ because he looked so badass and beautiful, suddenly got very ill. His condition kept declining and we had to say goodbye. Such a loss, even the cat misses him.


About the training: in general everything has been going smashingly!

Last Wed and Thurs were sessions dedicated as much to my mental health as anything else.


Wed June 1/ Bench- VERY late, went there because I needed to not lose my mind.

Warmup- Pullups bench width 4, 4, 3; shoulder disclocates, bradfords with the bar, incline pushups on the bench

BP- 85x5, 95x5, 105x5, 115x2, 3, 2

HS decline press- 1ppsx10x3

Incline one-arm DB press- 40x8x3 each arm

Thurs June 2/ Back- seriously stressed and pissed and took it out on unsuspecting iron…

Warmup- resistance tubing crap, DL 135x10 touch and go (The bar was there and I couldn’t help myself.)

Pendlay row- 118x6x2, 138x3x3

DB row- 80x5x2, 85x3x2 each arm

HS Iso Pulldown, underhand grip- 90x10, 140x8x2

Cable seated row- 10x3

Friday- Off

Saturday June 4/ Legs

Warmup- wall squats, spiderman crawls 10x4 each

FS- barx5, 95x5, 115x5, 135x5x2, 155x2… FAIL on 3rd rep! FUCK! Maybe I should start at 105 or 115 so I’m not so fatigued, dunno…

GM- 135x6, 8, 145x8, 7, 5; Doing these more regularly has definitely increased my confidence on these. I love them now ALMOST as much as I love RDLs!

OH Bulgarians from deficit (step + 6 risers)- 68x8, 8, 6 each leg; These have got to be the single most challenging exercise that I have done in recent memory!

Sunday June 5/Conditioning-- this session is brought to you by the number ‘5’…

Empty group fitness room with NO stupid gym music!!! I set up a circuit:

  1. Sprint across the room and back ~ 250 ft

  2. KB swing (35 lbs) x 20

  3. Plyo/Jump onto step with 4 risers x 20

  4. KB high pull x 10

Rinse and repeat, 5 times total with as little rest as humanly possible.

Then… waiters’ walk, 50 lb DB x ~250 ft x 5 each arm (10 total)

While I was doing those some guy came into the room to do his warmups and started asking me questions: do I compete, have I ever thought about powerlifting, what kind of program am I running… He told me that a friend of his organizes PL comps in Pennsylvania. I told him that I’d check it out. He said that there is one in August. We’ll see.


I’ll be back to post my training from yesterday and today later. Met an old lifting partner both days so I finally had a reliable bench spotter yesterday. Very pleased with my sessions recently. There was a bench rep PR yesterday that felt fucking awesome.

You’re using 68lbs on your Bulgarians? Yikes. I only use a body bar because I lack the motor skills to add more weight than that. What you’re doing is impressive.

The conditioning workout sounds puketastic.

For the front squat, you did do 5x2 at 135…that’s a lot in my opinion. I can’t remember if you’re on 5/3/1 or have a specific ramping protocol, but maybe do 135 as triples?

Also trying to catch up with posting my training before I go do my leg session this afternoon. I trained with an old lifting partner. Oh hell, whatever!!! Honestly, I let my ex come meet me at my gym and train with me. He was DYING to see me and I needed a reliable bench spotter. It isn’t like I hate him, I just can’t be his girlfriend or fuck him anymore. Bonus: He fed me after the gym both days!


Monday June 6/Chest and abs

Warmup- bench width pullups 5, 4, 3 (Ex tried to “assist” on the 2nd set and I almost kicked him… “back the FUCK off” or something like that came out of my mouth), shoulder dislocates, bradfords with the bar

BP- 75x5, 95x5, 115x5, 125x4…FAIL on 5th! *** Rep PR right there.

I knew I could put up more reps if I had a spotter to make sure I didn’t pin myself! We got into a tiff after the 1st set because he didn’t like my new (since we haven’t trained together in ages), non-BB bench setup! WHATEVER. I told him: LOOK you’re not my boyfriend or my trainer.

He actually tried to pull the chiro card on me and tell me that my arch was dangerous for my spine… he’s a medic, former world class TKD champ, former trainer, and apparently an ASS! He should fucking know better! We had a brief discussion that ended with my sincere request for him to keep his opinions to himself. I’ve been doing my own thing for too long for him to boss me around. The tone of the rest of the session was better.

Moving on…

Incline DB press- 45x8, 50x8, 4 (to failure)

Cable upward fly- 10x3, his thing not usually something I would do…

Bench DB fly- 20’sx10x3

Partner abs on mat- oblique crunches where partner sits on your legs, you lay on your side and come up 15x4 each side WHOA!!! Then prone back extension on the mat with partner on your legs 20x3.

Wasn’t sure if I would be able to move the next day after the ab routine, but I actually didn’t get DOMSy at all?!?!


Tuesday June 7/ Back and tri’s

Warmup- some random mobility shit

BB row- 118x8, 138x5x2, 148x3x2

Failed attempt to use hooks while doing DB rows. I got so frustrated that I did a few with some chalk after umpteenth tries with the hooks and I started getting angry so I moved on… My hands are too tiny to wrap around the DB + hook. FUCK!

HS wide pulldown- 140x8x2, 160x8

Pullovers on bench, perpendicular set-up- 40x7, 7, 10

I never do these and tried them at his suggestion. Took a while to get used to the motion but I like them alright I guess.

Skullcrushers (with a hand-off for a change)- 68x8, 9, 10 little assistance on the last rep

Dips- 7 + 12.5 DB between feet, 3 + 12.5 drop then 2 BW, 6 + 12.5

Done

After that I helped him with some plyo-medicine ball catching drills. Did I mention that I suck at throwing and catching balls? He is training for a fight and as a very short individual, he spends most of his time jumping to kick his opponent in the head, etc. Fucking savages. No offense to all of you martial artists.

We went to the diner after the gym and I told him that I wasn’t sure that training together was a good idea. We basically had a good time minus the arguing but I don’t want him to think that I’m going to take him back just because he patted me on the head for training hard, etc. I’ve been doing that on my own for my own reasons and I don’t need his approval.

And as a side note: He also commented on how much he liked how ‘big’ I’ve gotten. Seriously…


Off to the gym for my leg session BY MYSELF! I like lifting alone. If it wasn’t for the occasional need for a spotter that would work just fine for me indefinitely.
