Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

Hey mama!

Well, your training still looks really stellar to me - but i know you keep yourself accountable. 80s on the DB row, a bench PR - awesome!

Sorry to hear about the appetite. Mine’s been pretty shitty too lately - been nauseous, undereating - luckily I’ve overcompensated the last few weeks. lol! Anyways, could be some sort of biorhythm with the weather, stress, etc. Just hang in there!

Nadia- Yeah, the running has been feeling great. Exactly what I need right now. As for the prospect of a comp… not sure. Things in other aspects of my life are moving fast! Lots of excitement. No boyfriend, it is OFFICIAL. I broke it off on Tuesday night. Possibly catching a break on a real estate nightmare that has been ongoing for several years. Training for comp might not fit in with the rest of my life right now. Might be hanging drywall, refinishing floors and painting this summer instead.

Sugarlips- Your wifey is feeling better now. Eating again. Fried okra? Huh, sounds good I guess. I think I’m gonna get some straps soon. I bought a nice pair of Versa Grips for my ex last year for Christmas. I used them a couple of times and liked them… perfect for DB rows et al.

kmcnyc- Thanks. Pendlays felt great too! I am loving the ongoing cannoli conversation. I ate a couple on Tuesday night to make up for the fact that I hadn’t been eating much at all the past few weeks. A Sicilian cannoli sounds like heaven! Did you mean hook grips or a ‘hook grip?’ I can hook grip on lighter DLs but i couldn’t hang with the big weights without a mixed grip.

brute- You are awesome! Thanks for stopping in to remind me that I am too! I’m feeling 100% turbo once again and it is fucking amazing!

BG- Agreed. Straps would be nice on the DB rows. Same thing happens to me as far as my hand opening up.

Cal- Not to worry. There will be no wasting away in here. Funny thing, as soon as I broke it off for good with the bf I started feeling better and I was eating again by the next morning. I had discussed the appetite thing with a colleague at the office on Tuesday. She’s a DC but she does a lot of nutritional counseling. She did some applied kinesiology testing on me to check my endocrine system and I was clear. Her take was that the appetite loss was stress induced. Thankfully it was and the stress is over!

alexus- Yes, the weather definitely effects my appetite as well. I still get hungry but I crave raw vegetables instead. And my training only hit a minor speed bump. Took a couple of days off, rested, ate… good as new!

Maschy- Hell yeah. I went back through my log a little and realized that I really have been killing it. Taking 2 days in a row off from lifting (which is virtually unheard of in veggieworld) was exactly what I needed. The shitty weather here has been depressing though. I’m assuming that it has been raining in the city this week too. HELLO sunshine for the weekend!

So I didn’t train on Tuesday but I got a massage. A friend of mine owed me and I called her in desperation. I was just feeling so DOMSy and flat. The break up with the bf was later that night. Yesterday was a sleepy day. Took a 1.5 hour nap on my lunchbreak and came home and ate, watched baseball, and slept more. Woke up today feeling like myself. On and off of the phone doing real estate stuff, etc. Went to the gym and trained. Put on a great show for the midday crowd. LOL.

Wednesday training: legs

Warmup- Spiderman crawls and wall squats, 3x10 each

FS- barx5, 95x5, 105x5, 115x5, 125x3, 135, 135, 145; Was losing tightness (and focus) towards the end.

RDLs- 185x6, 195x8, 205x6, 215x4; Yeah baby, these felt awesome, every single rep!

Now for my real show of the day: I did OH bulgarian split squats with my front foot elevated. Very tricky regarding balance. Some people were seriously staring. I was set up nearby the smith machines (which are conveniently in front of the mirror to be brotard-friendly!) and I caught a guy looking right at me so I smiled and raised my eyebrows! Funny shit!

OH bulgarians, front foot on step (3 risers-- all I could scavenge!)- 53x8x3, each leg

I was seriously sweaty after those. That is serious effort in the concentration department! Very pleased with myself!

Finally…

Conditioning/giant set x 3: 1-arm KB swing (35 lbs) 10 each arm, walking lunges 45’s x 10

Done… Came home, showered, went to acupuncture.

those tricky bulgarians sound like they would have me falling all over myself…

Word. I can’t do the normally without falling over. Mad props.

I do my bulgarians with the back foot elevated - I actually use a body bar as stick to keep my balance or I’d fall on my face.

Glad the appetite is back, Veggie!

Back foot elevated defines the bulgarian split squat (EDIT: I think.) I always put my back foot on a bench, but I like to elevate my front foot too so that I can go DEEP, that’s all.

Ha that’s how I do my bulgarians; front foot elevated with bar overhead. Too bad I don’t do them anymore, but that part of the glutes gets hit in everything with squats and various DLs, so I figure why beat a dead horse. Which is good, I don’t like much accessory work and my glutes training is narrowed down to one exercise.

<3 the RDLs. I want to do them now, among my favorite exercises.

life stressors suck. not being sure about a decision can be the worst of all. hope you find some peace (and your appetite!) now you have made a decision. split squats with your front leg elevated. hmm. i never thought to try that. glad you had a great session.

Deficit- OH BSS nice work!
front squats too good session

I LOVE oh squats , but recently something is not right with my OH stability
I cant tell if its my neck - or shoulder two hotspots.

95x10 is too much- usually I am good for bwx4 which is like 185.

BSS are a staple here too- I like them allot- with the front foot elevated
all the more fun. OH even better, need to try those.

hook-grip fingers over thumbs
they help with things like high rep db rows,
I think I can hook grip 405.

hey veggie, Pendlay Rows for the mothafuckin’ win. new vid up by Pendlay himself on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlRrIsoDpKg

That ROCKS! Nice. I just try to do mine with a hop - explosive as I can but using a riser to go deep is awesome.

And I’m glad your personal life is getting sorted out. Stress is no good. And, Veggie, spending the summer working on a big remodel could be fun…or a helluva lot of work. It will be nice for us to see “progress pics” of your remodel. I went through an HGTV phase a few years ago and we did some big projects to our place. Maybe the urge will hit me again…nope. I think I’m done with that for awhile.

The last few days have been a whirwind. i got stuck at the office with an emergency case on Friday night so I didn’t make it to the gym. And I had to take my sister and brother-in-law to the airport at 4 a.m. yesterday. Then the little charger piece on my ancient blackberry broke when I plugged it in after the airport run, so I had to go get a new phone. To top everything off then I had a very enlightening, albeit distressing phone conversation with my ex. So happy that I jumped ship when I did…

I like all of the bulgarian split squat discussion that went on in here. That is one of my favorite exercises because it demonstrates imbalances and fixes them at the same time. WIN. Thanks for weighing in Frenchie, BG, Cal, Nikki ( and yes, I <3 RDLs too), alexus, kmcnyc, puff. And that Pendlay vid is awesome PB Andy. Nice post.

Going to try to do some evaluation and a bit of yard work at the project house today. It is cloudy and damp… perfect for pulling weeds!

I did make it to the gym to do some pressing yesterday. Here’s what I did…

Saturday training: Chest/shoulders

Warmup- bench-width pullups 5, 5; shoulder drills, bradford presses w/bar

BP- barx5, 65x5, 85x5, 105x5, 115x2, 2, 2, 125, 125

DB decline press- 40’sx8x3

MP- barx5, 65x5, 75x5, 85x2, 2

SS: standing arnold press/lateral raise w/20’s- 8/8, 6/7, 8/5

Pushup complex x 3- widex10, feet on step (8 risers)x10, rolling med ballx10 and I banged out 20 wide to finish up

Cross carry w/35’s, 4 total (2 each side) for ~150 ft each with a turn

Done

After the day I had I decided that I needed some additional recreation so I went to the driving range and smashed roughly 105 balls in 25 minutes. I don’t actually golf, but I love sending those balls sailing!

Came home, poured some single-malt and promptly got sucked into the Braves-Angels game. They went 12 innings in Anaheim. It was like 1:30 a.m. by the time the game was over. Damn baseball watching habit!

nice training. cool about the golf. never thought to do that, but it sounds like fun. mmm whiskey.

So I’ve been feeling sort of twisted up after that bizarre conversation with my ex. I’ve been doing my best to meditate and let it roll off, but there was some betrayal of trust (not cheating or anything) that left me really confused, deeply hurt, and with the feeling that I did not know the man that I had been dating for the last 5 years. Disturbing. And now he is texting and emailing me things like “I miss the smell of your hair.” There is no going back in my mind and I’m surprised to think that he thinks that everything could be ok again… weird.

Been trying to catch up on everyone’s logs too.

Sunday training/lower

Warmup- usual spiderman crawls and wall squats

Rack pulls, bottom pin- 135x5, 185x5, 195x2x2, 205x2x2; Making some sort of effort to bring up my DL again after a hiatus.

OH squat- barx10, 65x5, 85x2; Did these more to get into the squatting mood more than anything else. And they’re fun

Squat- 135x10, 155x5, 185x5

Suitcase DL- 78x6, 6, 5 each side; Those are fun AND hard-- I did not count the misses where the bar went tipping wildly.

Abs: Hanging twisting leg raises 10x3, floor leg raises with swiss ball while holding 25 lb DBs, about 50 jandas

I will be the first to admit that I neglect doing abs, but I’m always amazed at how strong I feel doing this crap despite myself.

Going to the gym tonight to do back, triceps, etc.— for the real purpose of trying to sort out things in my head!

Sorry to hear about the weirdness with the ex. Those situations are never easy. I remember when mine split up with me, I found yoga very helpful.
(Then several months down the line I got a lot of flirty messages from him and that turned into us getting back together. More or less, anyway, as I hardly see him. But that’s another story).

Training sounds good at any rate. Those are some strong squats and pulls.

Thanks Cal. This situation involved some major lying via omission. I was just floored by what he revealed to me. As a student of human behavior, I am really thrown by this one.

Fortunately for me I have my training to keep me sane and centered.

this~

Hang in there Veggie~

Sorry that your ex is making you feel torn. You gotta cut this off, cold turkey. I don’t like when you’re in a down mood ;(

Awesome training mamacita, and yeah it’s definetely helpful during stressful times.

Sorry to be naive…but what is a ‘pony.’

Thankfully you seem to be resilent and able to cope with things. keep up the good fight Veg & keep training.
