Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

My take on it (not a girl obviously) is that since bodybuilders strive for size, shape, definition and proportion, then you should completely take it as a compliment.

Unless, of course, you are trying to build the physique of a long-distance runner. If so, you have failed horribly

lol@ your answer!

Thats something that has held me back from doing a comp like that…all the details! And I fear training wouldn’t be FUN anymore.

Anyway, I would take it as a compliment. People can tell you put a lot of work in, and you have the ‘look,’ for it.

Aside from ‘weighing your food’, have you ever thought about doing a comp?

I think MiM hit it on the head. When people see you train hard and look fit, or muscular or whatever they tend to think you are training for competition.
I think the same thing happens when a person does a below parallel squat or technically sound deadlift with a descent amount of weight people ask if you are a powerlifter.

MiM- I think at this point in my life I would be more likely to enter a PL meet than a BB comp. Also, I detest the idea of dieting down to an unnaturally low bf %, then bouncing back to my set-point. Wouldn’t want to throw a monkey wrench into what has become a pretty finely-tuned machine. My body is pretty freaking happy just the way it is… metabolism is good, soft-tissue adaptation is fine, no injuries, other than usual DOMS I am good. Why fuck with that? Lastly, for the sake of vanity, I’m not sure that I would like how I looked at a comp weight.

thanks for your explanation of the exercises. yep, i think i’ll leave them alone and focus on pulling my femur into the socket and doing some leg raises… maybe work up to them down the track.

i read an article somewhere that was about how females train because they can (weird, i know). it was about how mostly people don’t ask guys what they are training for, but when people see females train they are often tempted to ask what it is that they are training for. like females need something whereas guys can simply do it because. i can’t remember who wrote it (sorry - hopeless like that, only remember ideas).

there was a phase at my gym where the trainers kept asking me why i wanted to squat so low. i was too embarrassed to say that i wanted to learn the olympic lifts but that was only part of the reason, anyway. i just wanted to get the movement. so that one day i could say i did it because i could. one of the head guys at the gym told me that there wasn’t any point squatting so low unless i was thinking of competing.

tool.

even now in the heavy weights room people often ask me what sport i’m training for. now i say i’m just training because. most of them are ‘oh… cool.’ and seem to take that on board.

people can be weird.

Veggie,
You would probably make a very good powerlifter. I think you said you had a gymnastics background? I knew of several gymnasts who got into powerlifting and did very well, they were built for the sport lever wise.

I really was more concerned that I had hurt her feelings. After I made the “food-weighing” comment, I asked her if she competed and she said “Yes.” Guess she does bb shows or more likely figure. People can think that I’m a lingere football player for all I care. Someone once suggested that I might be good at that. No thanks, I get bruised up enough in the gym all by myself.

Maybe I will post a bruise pic when I get home from gym later tonight. I have a few on my thighs/hips and one on the inside of my right forearm from the farmer walks on Mon. Very sexy, I know.

Correct.

I get both of those comments a lot.
People ask me everyday if I’m training for a competition. One guy even told me that I “walk/look like a BBer”.

When I do low reps, people comment on my form and weight and ask if I’m a PLer.

I take those as compliments. Even if I wasn’t interested in doing either at a competition level, I’ll still be flattered. I don’t think anyone wants to work out just to look like an average Joe/Jane. Competing in BB/PL are secondary goals for me, my primary goal however is to just walk through the grocery or mall or whatever and people just KNOW that I train… and hard.

As for your question, no, I don’t think that it’s a rude remark, it’s how you feel.
Then again, I can be crass at times so I’m not the best to answer questions about proper etiquette

Our similarities kill me. My grip holds me back and gives out before my lats or whatever, but I’m too stubborn to use straps as well.
And I’m not a fan of training biceps either.
For some reason though I like training triceps, but I don’t know if I like it because I really like it, or I have no choice but to train those pathetic suckers.

Lol! Someone once said this to me too! But I was rockin’ a mad bicep pump that day, plus I walk like a cartoon Napolean. So it made complete sense. I also get asked whether I’m a dancer a lot. Which is hilarious considering what a beast I am.

And I agree Veggie, your comment about weighing wasn’t rude - i mean, its the truth! And a BBer/Figure girl would totally recognize this as such. So i’m sure she didn’t even blink an eye.

Anywho, nice training mama! Not gonna lie, I have no idea what and HS or an SA is, but those are some formidable numbers - good stuff.

ps. You know what blew up my bi’s and tri’s? chin-ups! Good shit right thur.

German- Thanks, as always. You are correct about the “Are you a PL?” questions too… I get that from some of the weekend night crowd at one of my local training spots.

Alexus- Keep working on that hip/femur head issue. From your descriptions of the problem I am at least 95% sure that your problem is fixable without surgery at this time. I’m in the biz, and I see similar issues with people all the time. But IMO you should do everything you can to correct it now if you don’t want a hip replacement before you’re 50. And you’re right, some people seem to think that women must be training for some reason. I just tell people that I like to lift heavy stuff if they ask what I’m training for…

Ink- I’ll get a bruise pic up soon. So embarrassing in the summer at the beach. I had some really choice ones about a month ago from using a reverse-hyper. Between training and work it is a miracle for me to be unmarked at any given point in time.

Nikki- Cutie, don’t you get so f-ing pissed when your grip gives out?! I am actively trying to train my grip by doing farmers walks as much as I can tolerate. I have to tow a very fine line though b/c I CANNOT risk injury to my hands/wrists. Need 'em to bring home the (veggie)bacon. TG for my acupuncturist, she has helped keep me training hard and injury-free.

Masch- I am a very lazy/bad/slow typist, so I tried my best to use reasonable acronyms. HS is Hammer Strength: hate the feel of the cable pulldown at that gym, SA is straight arm.

Oh yeah, this is a training log. Tonight’s training (after a long day at my physically, mentally, and sometimes emotionally demanding job):

Chest/shoulders

Bradford Presses- some to warm up x bar

BP- some x bar, 2x6x75, 3x4x90, 1x2x90 (tri’s are kinda burnt from yesterday and working all day)

DB fly- 3x8x35’s

DB decline press- 1x10x35’s, 1x9x35’s, 1x10x35’s

DB front raises- alternating, 1x8x20’s, 1x7x20’s, 1x6x20’s

Got a weird, but not unfamiliar, pain under my left scap. Decided to just do some OH DB carries and go home. I used 25’s and 30’s, did one ~100 ft walk @ each weight.
2 x single arm
2 x both arms
2 x cross
Some moron young guys decided to do DB swings in the middle of the hall while I was doing the last couple. Jeez.

Veggie i may have to run a question about some hip pain by you. Been trying to figure it out for quite a while and can’t get to the root of it? Let me know if you would be willing to offer some suggestions and I’ll describe my issue. Good job on workout yesterday.

Veggie: Did I miss where you said what you do for a living?

German: Yes, feel free to ask questions.

Nadia: No, I didn’t specifically mention what I do. I’m a bodyworker who works side-by-side with a DC.

Bruise from Monday is fading nicely…

OK thanks in advance.
2 issues and maybe related.
First, odd pain in the piraformis, glute min/mead areas. No steady pain and appears at certain positions during deadlift and squat. Mostly just above parallel in the squat(top of quad parallel) and maybe bottom third of pull on convention deadlift.

Very brief and sharp, feel s like all power is gone for a brief second an lift will kind of float though that position due to momentum then pain is gone. Seems to happen more if i get into a forward lean during those lifts but not limited to that scenario.

Second DOMS very specific to squat and is somewhere between gracilis and semitendonosis. I can do normal hip adduction when it is sore but forget hip extension from a bent knee position such as squat/dead and no problems with hip extension during reverse hyper type of movement.

I do massage/trigger point work about 3x/ month with therapist, foam roll and lacrosse ball roll 4-6x per week plus stretching. Along with many things like lunges etc as supplemental lifts to stay well rounded not just squats/deads.
I am a big believer in the whole refered pain/ body mapping thing and can figure out most of things that come up but these two are puzzling?

German- PM me and let me know if the first thing is bilateral or unilateral. My answer will be different depending on that. On the second one, I think that those DOMS are probably just a function of squatting deep w/possible over-recruitment of those muscles (which could be a compensation for what is I suspect is causing problem #1.) Definitely PM me, as I am happy to discuss.

overhead dumbbell carries sound fun!

Alisa- Those DB carries are awesome. I really like how dynamic they are. Also unbelievably challenging core work, my obliques get hit pretty hard, especially on the cross carry. But, I originally started working them in to help with shoulder stability. Had some issues in the past and want to keep my shoulders healthy so that I can make progress on my bench.
