Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

Max- I give a thumbs up to behind the neck pressing personally. There aren’t any “bad” exercises in my book… just ones that are inappropriate for some individuals. I regularly do bradford presses and like to use them to warm-up and mobilize my shoulders before pressing. If they seem to be beneficial for you then they probably are. Often times it comes down to using proper form, right? And generally not being an idiot.
This right here. I do them as well. And I love the idiot peanut-gallery that try to tell me why I shouldn’t do them.

Really like that avi.

Hey veggie,

How much assistance work can you do with GVT, I know your not following it to a tee, but like Ive said before Im def looking into it. I basically mean how much energy do you have left after doing a 100 reps of stuff, I know we are all different but a ballpark estimate.

Also a beautiful new pic.
For me, it depends on my energy levels and how the targeted muscle feels on that day. I did GVT focusing on my shoulders the other day. I was only able to the the 10x10 MPs, and that was it. Other times, I’ll be able to do a good bit of assistance work. Veggie may have a different take, though.

Sorry for the hijack.

Once again, gorgeous pic.

Anyway, I drove to the sporting goods store from the gym. Got the foam roller and another pair of shorts - lime green cheetah print, check back for pix soon - and drove home.
The kind in the volleyball shorts section? I love those things. They’re totally ridiculous. Neon colors, animal prints, metallics. Cant wait to see you model them.

Also, I’m going to have to go with MiM and a few others. The PVC “foam rollers” are great. Keep on saying I’m going to get some PVC to add to my collection of torture devices but never seem to get around to it. Anyone else use The Stick?

I’ve used it. Not bad, but I prefer the foam roller. Have a couple on order. They’ll be waiting for me in G-Town.

It doesn’t go deep enough to replace the foam roller, but I can carry it around in my little gym bag which is nice. And I simply can’t figure out how to effectively hit the adductors/sartorious/gracilis on a foam roller.

I’ve only tried making “kale chips.” IMHO, nothing like a chip, but I’m not too much of a chip person anyway. The flavor’s okay, but I don’t much care for it. I’d rather eat broccoli. I could probably eat it every day. Some weeks I do! I guess Veggie:kale as Lanels:broccoli.

Bre/TPD/?- I would certainly enjoy having a scotch or 6 with you.
let’s do it, but I’m cutting you off after 2.5 and we’re taking it to some place more comfortable. or less comfortable. Whatever you’re into at the moment.

So I had a long day at the office which was broken up by an 1.5 hr nap in the middle of the day. I do love my life. Weather was so dreary and soggy that I could have stayed in bed all day… especially if there was someone else in the bed, but that’s another story.

I got myself all mixed up about which split I was supposed to do tonight. Probably can attribute that to the fact that I got about 30 mins of bodywork on my legs after office hours, complements of my boss. He’s awesome and I do it for him too, especially once cycling season gears up. Anyhow, guess all the blood was in my thighs and not my brain by the time I hit the gym.

Tonight’s training upper GVT (turned out as back/shoulders)

Warmed up with some bradford presses. Pretty loose after working people over all day.

Pendlay rows @ 93: 10, 10, 8, 8, 7, 7, 6, 7, 6, 5; 74 reps, probably should’ve gone a bit lighter, but fuck it. Now I can really strive for 100, right?

MP @ 60: 10, 10, 10, 8, 8, 8, 7, 6, 9, 8; 84 reps

Both of the main lifts that I did tonight are not ones that I typically do. Made for an interesting session. Purposely wanted to hit the muscle groups a little differently than usual. GVT really takes advantage of neural adaptations, so why not switch up the exercises and make the most of it!

Decided to play with the KB for accessory/conditioning. I’ve missed having fun with it on a more regular basis over the past 2 weeks. I also wanted to get some more circulation going in my legs after the bodywork. I had rubbed them down mid-afternoon with biofreeze too. My legs were honestly pretty destroyed after the squat/RDL session yesterday. The good news is that I do see some additional size, especially in my quads. Legs are feeling sore but very powerful.

One-arm KB swings @ 35: 3 x 10 each side

Bent over DB rear delt flys: 1 x 10 x 15’s, 1 x 10 x 20’s

KB single arm clean & press some on each side for grins

Neutral chins, bw: 5, 3

I was officially fried by then and the gym was closing so I went home. It wasn’t until I was driving home that I realized that I fucked up the split. Tonight was supposed to be back and arms. Oh well, doesn’t really matter that much. I’ll do chest and arms on Sun. Tomorrow will be a rest day. Doing some dog walking but that’s it. Planning to eat, nap w/gran’s American Bulldog and watch the Phillies. TGIF.

Oooh GVT Pendlays. Sexy.

Speaking of sexy, love the new avi.

Sorry you rearranged the split a little. Happens to me all the time. Well, not messing up the split. Just messing up other things.
I get over it, it’s part of the reason why I don’t have anything set in stone.

So, you’re going to do GVT-style biceps? Ouch. Triceps I might manage (maybe not) but my biceps are worse than triceps. I’ll have to be scraped off the floor.

As for the quad remark, I gotta say it… POIDH =D

Alright, sugar. You’re right.

Whaddaya think?

Like my wacky volleyball shorts? I couldn’t resist buying them. They will make my GVT leg day even more fun!

You know what else is funny? There were some signs up tonight in the gym about a volleyball league starting. Maybe I should show up and look hot, you know, since I gotz the shorts!?!?! I seriously suck at volleyball, but I could look smokin’ hot out there.

your legs are growing?! i would be annoyed except given how hard you are working with the GVT I suppose it is only fair :-p

yeah, i can’t get enough soft tissue work, too. when i get a proper job i’m going to find myself a good ART / soft tissue therapist. really looking forward to that. i guess i wasn’t sure how much the soft tissue work is specific to the modality or how much carry-over there is between modalities (since i’ve only ever done my own rolling and have never even had a massage). makes sense that the carry over would be good, though.

glad to hear you are enjoying your life

i kinda wish i could change career tracks… something related to the gym, but i don’t know what. tried to get into medicine (orthopedic / sports would have been great though i made a good case for psychiatry given national shortage) and apparently i interviewed well but was culled at the final stage. realistically my lack of mathematical competence would have arisen as a problem… dunno… bit late for that probably…

yup - next time pendlays with 100lbs. you got it

girl! srsly! pink shirt?! You can do better with those crazy “shorts” !

I love your log Veg! Great work in here, keep on bringing it

Veg! The GVT is killer, girl! And yeah, your quads are getting bigger - nomnomnom. Super strong, juicy and delicious

And if you’re using those shorts for squat day…well, DAMN! I wouldn’t be surprised you had an entire audience that claps after each set. HAHAH!

Pendalays are damn hard! At least for me. I found the extra ROM to be 10x more difficult than a regular BB Row. Do you use anything under the plates, like a step or something? Or are you pulling them straight off the ground? I couldn’t get 95 to budge off the ground and figured it was b/c i’m not strong enough to pull that extra ROM.

And yeah, the new avi is AWESOME!

Great work in here cupcake. Keep it up!

Took my gran’s sweet brute to the park this morning. She is a 90 lb American Bulldog. This girl really is a brute. She has been kicked out of doggie daycare for taking down other dogs. A bit canine-aggressive. She drools if she sees one of those little white dust mop-looking dogs. Kinda funny actually.

I love walking big, scary fucking dogs! My bro’s pit-mastiff-shar pei mix used to live with me. At the time I was living in lovely Trenton, NJ. State capitol and basically the armpit of the state, literally and figuratively. People would cross to the other side of the street when they saw us coming. Or sometimes not me, but MY DOG, would get propositioned… dudes would stop me to ask if he was available for stud. He looks like a big, lanky athletic pit bull. Gorgeous chocolate and carmel bridle.

Anyway, we tromped through the woods for an hour, on and off trail. It was muddy but the sun was shining. Probably just what my legs needed. Hiking over uneven terrain, crossing streams on slippery rocks, sliding on mud, and hopping logs set up by mountain bikers. Sometimes I go ride there so it was cool to see some of the new stuff, ramps, etc. that people have set up.

Stopped to get some espresso on my way home. As I was walking out of the shop I looked down and saw a tick crawling on my tank top :frowning: One of the hazards of walking in the woods… needless to say, I stripped down in the garage when we got home.

My entire body is sore today. Looking forward to doing absolutely nothing.

MiM- Love your foam roller, especially the fact that the ends appear to be capped. Very polished.

Matty- Thanks. Assistance work is entirely based on how I feel. Except for the leg day. I couldn’t even imagine doing anything else after all the squats and RDLs. I don’t even do calves like the original calls for… On the upper days I do whatever assistance stuff I’m in the mood to do. Sometimes it can be a lot or a little, depends on how much I still have in the tank after the main lifts.

Frenchie- Good luck with the waiters’ walk turns. Thanks, that photo really came out well. Minimal iPhoto finishing. Also, I want all 100 reps on any lift before I go up in weight. The Pendlay’s will stay at 93 lbs til then. Maybe 100 lbs by the end of this cycle

Beast- Thanks. Not a hijack regarding your opinion on GVT and foam rollers. I’m pretty laid back. Feel free to speak your mind in here.

BG- Yup. Volleyball shorts. So fucking obnoxious that I had to have them. For what its worth, the next torture device that I’m buying is a ma roller. Have one at the office. The MA Roller | About My co-worker, also a bodyworker, swears by the thera cane. Might get one of those at some point too. http://www.theracane.com/

Lanels- I like kale best in its pure, untouched state. But the chips are cool. And I love broccoli too. Its in the top 10 for my favorite veggies.

Nikki- Thanks hon! Not sure how sexy those Pendlays were, but I like that you THINK that way. No doubt the avi is… thanks. I haven’t done GVT biceps yet this time around, but I most certainly did last fall when I was doing this program. BB curls for 100 reps. Talk about stupid huge biceps pumps! Maybe I’ll do 'em tomorrow just for fun.

alexus- This program coupled with the amount of food and supplements that I have been consuming = growth. I’m hoping that the additional mass will set me up for higher intensity. I really want to add some weight to my main lifts. And yeah, for the most part, anything that you can do with a foam roller or other self-massage tool is basically what I do with my hands and tools all day. I really encourage my patients to do stuff on their own between visits because it is good for them and it makes my job a little easier. Careers in health and wellness are cool, but my job can be grueling sometimes, not to mention gross. But I love it none the less.

Bre- I’d probably choose someplace more comfortable  And i was lazy and left my sweaty pink tank top on from the gym when I took the photo of the shorts. I plan to wear them with a turquoise top when I squat on Tues. You can’t see it, but there is turquoise flecking around the charcoal grey cheetah print. My chucks are grey. I’ll be looking flossy with my color-coordinated outfit while I’m dripping sweat, gasping for air and being generally noisy and indifferent to the gym idiots during my next squat session.

N8tive- Thanks girlie. Always pushing my limits.

Masch- Thank you, thank you. Nobody has ever actually clapped for me while I was lifting, but I certainly get some gawkers and I don’t mind one bit. I wouldn’t wear that stuff and expect people not to look. As for the Pendlays, nah, I just pulled from the floor. I really felt it hit my lats differently than a regular bent over BB row. I like that. Oh, and for the record: they were only 93 lbs. My gym has those weird bars that are non-standard but I weigh them because I’m a neurotic geek

Oh, pardon, 93 lbss. HAHAH! You’re silly.

Well then, damn, i need to step up my game! Them Pendlays be hard!

Great day for hike!! I need to get out of the house myself. Have a great weekend girlie!

Thanks for the pic MiM!

I didn’t put her chain “necklace” on, but here’s my girl & I chillin’…

Doesn’t she look vicious? Lol, this dog is a princess! Sleeps on a full size bed OR Gran’s tempurpedic if it is empty OR on the couch spread-eagle. No shame. She does have a cheese/food addiction though. Could stand to lose a few, but she’s big and strong. And she can jump. Powerful legs just like me

My 22 lb fat cat will take down your 90 lbs bulldog, shit he might eat her
