I think Hughes would beat Hansen as well…but that would be an interesting fight. Hansen is a bit lighter, no?
Diego/Karo/BJ/GSP/Genki even would also be fun to see…even Kid Yammamoto at 143. I’d also like to see Hughes/Lindland

Not that I know of. But opponents like Gomi and Sato… well, it would be fun to see Hansen vs. Hughes, but i don’t think that it is going to happen, and if it does, i think Hansens KO-power and his eminent groundgame is too much to handle for Hughes…
You have got to be kidding me…Hughes would destroy Hansen. There is way too big a size and strength disparity there…for that matter BJ Penn would annihiliate Hansen as well.[/quote]
Good fight, diego sanchez’s piggy back was pretty sweet too. Spencer fisher’s flying knee to the head was priceless…anyways
Hated to see royce lose but I was wanting hughes to win.
Royce had BALLS in that armbar. If he ended up winning after getting out of that armbar, it would have been legendary…but he didn’t. Its not that he lost that bothers me, its that he didn’t perform up to his ability. Like Hughes said, he shouldn’t be able to catch a Black Belt’s arm like that.
I think Hughes was favorite…but that armbar (Which led to the events that ended the fight) was a fluke. Once your a blue belt you never ever leave your arm out there like that. But maybe Gracie hasn’t been controlled from the side in decades… I know Royce would do ANYTHING to fight Hughes again.
I was thinking…Hughes would never fight Royce again. But I think Royce would fight for free and give Matt a HUGE payday to get back in there. But since the fight was so lopsided Royce would have to win a few matches for the promoters to even consider it. But that is just a fantasy right now…and maybe Hughes wins the next fight in 2 minutes instead of 4.
But Royce made no excuses in the press conference after the fight. When asked if he thought Big John stopped to soon, he said “no.”
Royce was disappointed with HIS performance.
And for those that saw the post-fight press conference, I love the comment Royler made…I have an enormous amount of respect for Royce, and hope he goes out a winner…everybody loves a good comeback.(except for the Gracie haters)
I am so glad that hughes beat gracie. Hughes did exactly what he said he would do.
The gracie mystique is so overrated but it has been marketed with intelligence so people buy it. If Rickson gracie is so fuckin good why didn’t he or one of the 60 other gracie brothers step in and carry the torch after royce wised up and decided to give up competition?
If someone is a world class wrestler, they are going to be fine going up against an individual with a jiu-jitsu background as long as they know submissions. In fact in timed rounds, wrestling is superior because it is a more aggressive style.
But Hughes trains everything, jiu-jitsu,wrestling, muy thai, boxing…the main difference between him and gracie. THe UFC and Pride no longer has fighters with “styles” just backgrounds but the all train evberything…that is if they are good. Gracie learned some striking, but was he good at it?
If someone thought Gracie was going to beat Hughes, all they had to do was watch fight tape of Gracie fighting Art Jimmerson and his one boxing glove. Then watch Hughes’ fights. That would give you an idea of where eachother where at.

Now this doesn’t sound half bad…think of an open-weight grand prix like pride does…since their middleweights and welterweights are mostly around 190 anyways.
Yet another young bitch from this “x” generation that knows nothing about gameness…don’t like it, quit. That simple. Don’t waste your breath on a quitter - he can always start his PS2 over again if he loses. G showed honor and gameness - for someone to come here and make that comment speaks for itself. It deserves neither reply nor debate - let his comments stand on their own turdpile.

Good point, Hughes also showed that he is STILL a true to form wrestler, he worked to the outside of the guard almost effortlessly. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone ride Gracie in side mount for that long, and I can’t ever remember anyone getting on his back. Grappling diciplines tend to be more defensive, Hughes is the agressor. Definately a wrestler.
As for the tap out to BJ< I doubt we’ll ever see Hughes do that again. Again with being a wrestler comes a certain transition when chokes and submissions come into play. That tap was premature and out of frustration and inexperience in MMA. Hughes is a smarter animal now.
