core training.
Wanted to lift today but my back’s sore. This week is going to be flaky due to being away and having family stuff again + work is still going to be stupid busy.
This week’s training has been a little low key due to a lot of other commitments and a heavy work schedule…
I have been able to juggle my training sessions to ensure that I’m able to get quality training time in at Leicester Shootfighters - this week 3 x submission grappling sessions + 1 MMA session.
Also, looking back I realised how much my strength/lifting has dropped off so I made a concerted effort to get a session in this week:
Power cleans 5 x 5 up to 70kgs (Felt the lay-off big time)
5/3/1 deadlifts up to 13 x 117kg
Farmers walks
I think that dropping weight - I’ve lost about 20lbs since mid Jan - and training being more about conditioning and technique, I just haven’t really felt motivated for weights. It doesn’t carry over as obviously or apparently to fighting. Still, knowing this, I’ll keep an eye on it.
It’s been an interesting couple of weeks training-wise. Work is crazy at the moment which has meant just doing what I can when I can. I also need to acknowledge my wife’s patience and willingness to work around the training with regard to child care, etc. and losing a husband for up to four hours a night! :angelic-grayflying: I’ve managed at least two sessions of grappling/mma a week though it’s been hard to keep up with wrestling and strength training. Overall, I’ve probably managed 3-4 sessions a week, just trying to get some work in.
I weighed at the gym last night and it looks like I’ve lost 10kgs / 24lbs over the last 2 months. My conditioning is much improved (as measured by percieved exertion during training) though, of course, my lifts are down. It was hard to reconcile this initially but the improvements in other areas have been worth it. For example, my overhead press, this week I failed to get 1 strict rep at a weight I’ve used for 5+ previously. :mozilla_cry:
Obviously I’ll maintain the strength training and as I’ve said before ensure I don’t neglect it, but technique, conditioning and sparring are my main focuses at the moment.
I had spoken to my coach about fighting at the end of March but I don’t know if Ill make weight for the class that I want to be in so my have to postpone even though the cut is going pretty well.
Anyway, another couple of insane work weeks beckons so I don’t know if I’ll be posting much, I guess we’ll see…
Training has been going well even though my work life is horrible at the moment. Strength training has been noticably absent from the regimine again with the focus on sparring, conditioning and skill work. Last week was circuits, MMA training, wrestling and grappling. This week’s been more of the same so far.
Looking at fighting end of April/beginning of May depending on the weight cut.
Not posted for a while but I’ve definitely been busy. Training has centred around submission grappling and wrestling training at Leicester Shootfighters as our coach feels that amateur MMA (no head shots) tends to place even more emphasis on the wrestling aspect of fighting. A few of us have thrown our hats in for this event.
The rules are a bit unusual but it’s a good organisation. As such I’ve moved in to the stand up sparring which this week comprised 2 x 3 mins pads, 2 x 1.5 mins technical sparring. 3 x 3 mins boxing, 3 x 3 mins kickboxing. Good fun and tough.
So with just over a month to go training will step up and diet will be cleaner. I’ll update as regularly as I can here and on my blog.
2 hour training session at Leicester Shootfighters. 1 hr submission wrestling followed by an hour of situational sparring, I.e. simulating taking on a kicker or a wrestler or a BJJ guy. This was one of the most gruelling things that I have ever done and I thought that I was going to puke a couple of times. I was working with one of the other guys who’s fighting in the same competition as me and we were being coached by one of the experienced fighters from the team. I had to sit one round out as I felt a bit faint!
7th April
Circuits:
10 x 1 min rounds of different exercises, 5 seconds change over between exercises.
Boxing (heavy bag,)
Sprawls
Sandbag shoulder
Sit-throughs
Dummy g’n’p
Dummy suplex lift
Plank
Resistance band shoot
Dummy body lock (isometric hold)
Boxing
The last couple of weeks have been absolutely horrible in terms of work. Training, diet and rest have seriously suffered due to 14hour days involving 200+ mile drives. This is what I’ve managed:
11th April. Sparring - 8 x 3 min rounds kickboxing & takedowns.
15th. 10 x 2 min Bas Rutten All Round Fighting on the heavy bag. 20 reps log clean and press @40kg.
17th Sparring 9 x 3 min rounds kickboxing & takedowns
19th 1 hour wrestling + 1.5 hours submission grappling, inc. 3 x 5 min rounds sparring & 8 x 3 min rounds positional sparring.
Hoping that things get easier time wise over the next week.
