Feet Don't Stay Flat w/ Squats

I can’t keep my feet flat on my squats. The outside edge is rising up on both feet. Wondering if it’s a mobility issue? It even happens when I do 3rd world squats. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I’d suggest if you’re doing medium or close stance squats to try putting a small plate under each heel.

The issue is probably a flexibility one, but if you try the plate thing it will work around that until you can improve your flexibility.

The purpose of this is to be able to drive the force through your heels while still keeping good form(i.e. not doing good-morning squats). If you’re not flexible enough yet, it’s not possible to do this without something under your heels.

If the outside of your feet are edging up it sounds like you’re letting your knees bow in.

yea, sounds more like your letting your knees bow in. Are you using heavy weights? this sounds like something that happens quite often with my clients when we go heavy and they are afraid to let their ass take the weight, so you compensate by bowing your knees and shifting your weight to your toes/quads.

You could try wearing arch supports, if your arch flattens out your feet/ankles will roll in and that will bring your knees in, might cause knee pain over time. Might help, you can try just stuffing a folded up (many times) paper towel under your arch in your shoe and see if you notice any difference.

Push your knee’s out.

I always try and ‘spread the floor apart’ when doing ATG squats.

My GF also has this problem even without any weight. She is just starting with iron so I want to correct all mistakes asap. When does it happen? Can you at least quartersquat with feet flat? I think you should shorten the rom for now and really try to focus on correct form with adding inches every workout or so. Let us know how it goes!

I can get to parallel<sp?> before they start to come up. I don’t let my knees bow in, that was one of my first thoughts. My normal stance is shoulder width. I have had mobility issues with the muscle that runs the bottom of my feet. I’m thinking it might be the issue. They would tighten up so bad at night I couldn’t walk when I woke up. I’ll try the plates to see if that fixes it. Thanks for the help everyone.
