Favorite Motivational Saying

What is your favorite motivational saying? Not the kind you like sitting at a desk, but what words motivate you to crank out those last few reps or add that every 10 lbs to the bar on ME day? For me it is “Redifine intensity” and thinking like the Zen principle that views the arrow and the target as being one, only applying it to the bench press and lockout, deadlift and lockout, etc. It just makes you think beyond how you nomrmally do and stops your mind from inhibiting your body.

There is a good one that Wayne Bennett, who is a Rugby League coach has in his book. It’s a good one for those training sessions where it is raining, cold, too hot or whatever your gripe may be.

“Thinking about ploughing won’t get the job done.” - Wayne Bennett.

Anthony Robbins suggest that people use incarnations to keep themselves motivated and on track.

Whilst running in the morning Anthony reassures himself that he is getting better by chanting “Everyday, in every way, I’m getting stronger and stronger.”

Fantastic. Try it. Don’t just think it. Yell it at the top of your voice.

The guy clearly has some dicky ideas. That almost takes the cake.

For my football team we had this on he cover of our players manual.

“For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack” - Rudyard Kipling

“I am not man. I am dynamite!”

It’s an old T-Nation fave and one I loved before I ever found this site.

Helps to get me out of the hole when squatting heavy.

“stop being a fen pussy”
not sure were it came from but it always makes me go for that extra rep.

“Move that wieght or I punch you in the nuts!”. I yell that when spotting someone. Works every time.

that’s got to get people laughing pretty hard.

my current favorite for all occaisons is “Man Up, fancy boy”

A good one from when I was in the Army was. “How about a can of harden-the-fuck-up?”

" you’ll probably never go anywhere unless you leave. " -henry rollins

For the long hall: “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. It has that dont give up, you will eventually acheeve it effect.

For the now hall: “Cowboy up”. It has that old fashioned, get ready to pull your 6-shooter/5-shooter, meet me at high noon, lets slam some wiskey, time to visit the brothel, “real” wild west, now or never effect to it.

For every set and every rep you do, someone else, somewhere else is doing 1 more"

“Ma Dama-ta”
Translated: “I’m not finished yet”

(I hope no one on here speaks Japanese to correct this)

My favorite longer-form motivational piece is the famous Henry Rollins one…been posted here before, will be posted again.

This one’s taped on my mirror, pinned on the bulletin board by my desk at school, and often on my mind:
“The Iron is the best antidepressant I have ever found. There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it’s impossible to turn back.
The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.”

I like that one. So will a lot of the other competitive athletes.

Steven Prefontaine:

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”

When I am trying to get that last rep of a set out I think of a quote that I actually first read in a thread on T-Nation. I cant remember who wrote it but it was something like

“If you dont get this you are fucking pussy”

Works for me.

incantations?

“Come on you Bitch, you CAN do this!”

This is said aloud and I am usually angry at the time for petering out. I find being angry out loud gives me a second wind, well sometimes just a breeze but it keeps me going.
