Fat Guy in a Little Coat- Powerlifting Log

What is disturbing is I was in bed, in my pillow fort, and said to myself ‘thank you Meat’… and drifted off to happy sleep.

All this talk of pillows, duct tape and meat in bed. Makes me feel funny inside.

no… what would be disturbing is if you wake up with morning wood and i’m the first thing on your mind.

having said that… the next time you have “relations” I’m definitely going to pop into your head.

it happens…

i feel so much closer to you now bro:)

started my next bench cycle tonight. everything went as planned. i hit a 30lb PR on reverse band bench with plenty left in the tank. another bonus is the last time i did these at a bodyweight of 280+. i’m sitting at a solid 260 right now. all sets were done with ring fingers on rings… thats close for me.

so… this is what i did.

reverse band bench
315x6
405x6
495x4
585x1
675x1x3 + 30lb PR. next week i’ll up this to to at least 700. i have a vid but i’ll wait until i’m in the 700’s to post one.

speed bench against minibands
135x3
225x3
315x3x6

cable crossovers- i use these as a type of prehab for my shoulders.

some x 30,50

just when I start to feel kinda strong you gotta come and pull this… thanks a lot buddy.

Good effen work. Are the bands for the speed bench doubled?

Damnit. You’re making me re-watch past videos to get my Meat fix.

P.S. 700s is just crazy heavy.

to be honest, i was going to post a vid of the 675 but i accidentally erased it as i was trying to upload it. yeah… i’m a big fat stupid idiot. next week hopefully i’ll get it right.

the hardest part of using bands is getting your setup right. otherwise, you are being pulled forwards or backwards will trying to keep from being crushed by the bar… good times.

the minis aren’t doubled. i haved doubled them but not for speed work… at least not for bench anyway.

when i was reverse benching 675 i couldn’t help but think of mendelson benching this as straight weight for a pause. that’s just stupid strong. th most i’ve ever held was 650 and that was off a four board. i couldn’t imagine bringing 700lbs down to the chest and then pausing it raw.

last night i ironed out most of the details on my upcoming bench only meet and bench press seminar. it looks like the seminar will be the first weekend in december and the bench meet will be the third weekend in January. things are coming together.

That’s crushing weight on the bench. That must be how a submarine crew feels after descending below the recommended depth to avoid a depth charge.

another good training session. hit up the elevated deads again. decided to jump 50lbs from last time. it was a bit much of a jump. i hit the first set but definitely blew my load. if you sit through the entire vid of that set you will see why. my lower back is definitely getting stronger. in the past, this position would cause a shearing pain through my lower back as i initiate the lift. this time i didn’t get that until the second set:)

elevated deads- right at sticking point
135x3
225x3
315x3
405x3
495x3
635x3,1 + 50lb increase from last week. this may be the most i’ve pulled from my sticking point but i’m too lazy to look back through my book. all i know is that i won’t be happy with it until i have it over 700 at my sticking point.

front squats against minis- the bands add somewhere between 100-150lbs at the top. - paused at bottom

135x6
225x6
315x3
365x3- this felt like what 495 feels like at the top.

Impressed.

After all of this Meat-watching, as I’m about to unrack the squat bar I’ve taken to visualizing you with all that weight on your shoulders in that last squat vid, and I think “would Meat pussy out on squatting this? No. Then should Kimba pussy out on squatting this. NO!”

So far, this is working - got past a stupid-ass fail-weight this week.

Looking strong as always. You and Pete got me wanting to hit front squats. See if I can do some working sets with your warmup weights.

Nice work. So are you now doing what, a bench day, a squat/dl day, and an assistance day?

thanks Kimba!! visualization is definitely helpful. i usually visualize something really hurtful in my past. that’s why sometimes it takes me awhile to get going. i’ve had youtube “experts” critisize me for taking too long before some of my lifts. sometimes i get a scenerio running in my head and it has to play out before i can lift.

yep… the bench day and squat/dead day are super low volume and the accessory day is high (for me) but the reps are really high and the weight is moderate.

less is definitely more, for me, when it comes to getting stronger. pretty soon i’ll be doing a full body workout once a week with one working set for bench, squat and dead. then i’ll call it a week:)

funny, I have had success running high volume, which I would say I am right now, and also low volume. A lot of it has to do with what else I got going on in my life. Right now I am in a salaried, now hourly job, have a gym across form work, and another close to home, and if needed can bring the kid with me. A few years ago I was working an hourly job, with lots of OT, and ran a set up kind of like your current one, and made great gains that way.
I will probably revert to at least less frequency somewhere in the next 6 months, as we get closer to the new baby being born. Right now I just enjoy getting in to get some work done 5 or 6 times a week.
