MM, somewhere I saw you have competed mostly in the APF and SPF. When competing raw do you still use the mono for squats in those feds? [/quote]

yeah… i love the monolift. i use it in competition. i wish i had one to train with. i fucking hate walking a heavy squat out. or should i say, i hate reracking a heavy squat.

Finally found your training log. I like the name of it… I couldnt remember your name on T-Nation but saw this thread and knew I had found it, lol.

Isn’t that considered cardio?

I just watched those 785 sumos. Great googelly moogelly! I was afraid the bar was gonna snap! BTW, you do look thinner on your right side!

i’m hoping to hit something in the 800’s this weekend. i’ll probably break out the squat bar for that one:)

Agreed. I almost never do real maxes in my squat training because I have the damn rerack, walk back in to worry about.

Lol.

I didnt know this site had such a large forum. Ive used T-Nation tons of times for reading articles but didnt really look at the forum section.

Hey Meat…pardon me for posting this here but I couldn’t find the other thread for questions.

I pulled 475lbs PR conv deads today and barely held on to it for 3 secs. Short story is that my grip strenght sucks. I have long suspected it but never really gave it a serious thought until today.

I think it is fair to say that I am relatively weaker from my finger tips to my elbow. My skull crusher strength is probably stronger than my curl strength, and the overuse injury when I bench too much(4x times a week during smolov jr) is a pain in the middle of my left forearm, and not in my shoulders.

What would you recommend I incorporate into my training? My training for the next 2-3 months is heavy squatting 2-3x a week and very little full ROM deads to save my lower back. Other things I can do without.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, is it possible to be stronger at the bottom of the deads than at the top? I have reasons to suspect I am this way.

Thanks hoss!

Not sure if ive been mentioned much in here, but my deadlift seems to be this way. He has a vid of my PR DL on his youtube, and it comes off the ground REALLY quick, but I have an extremely hard time locking it out. The reverse band DL we are doing right now will hopefully help me out.

Im not sure exactly what scotts thoughts are on this, but I think my upper back/lats are a weakness in my deadlift too.

i’ve had issues in the past with holding onto the bar. i started doing plate pinches after every training session and my grip quickly caught back up. i started with two ten pound plates and pressed them together with my thumb, index and middle finger. i picked them up and held them for as long as i could. i would watch the clock. once i could hold them for 30 seconds i moved up to two 25’s, then 35’s and finally two 45’s. i would do 3 sets for each hand. this took care of the grip issue.

obviously if you are having forearm issues from benching, don’t bench so much. i only pull, squat and bench once a week and that keeps me pretty healthy.

as for being stronger at the bottom. of course you can. everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. if you are stronger off the floor then you would need to train more top end stuff with elevated deads, reverse band stuff like jowee said and speed work. i, myself, am strong off the floor and often stall before lockout. as a result i do a lot of top end work and speed stuff.

Thanks Jowee and Meat. Please indulge me as I have some questions on your recommendation…

  1. Plate Pinches: Not that I imagine I could use your poundage but did you progressed from 20 to 90 pounds for each hand or was it 10 - 45 for each? Were you doing this one hand at a time or both hands together?

2)Would rack pulls from various pin height do for elevated deads? Should I start with a comfortable weight and progress or is there % of my 1RM you would recommend?

  1. Speed stuff: What % of 1RM X rep X set is good here to start?

  2. Reverse band: The only thing I know about these is watching your videos of them. I will do some research and may ask about them if unclear. For now could you recommend a good band to buy? I am not sure if I need any other thing outside bands, power rack and, of course, the bar and plates to do them.

Thanks! Your input is really appreciated.

i always do one hand at a time. i started with two - ten pound plates, then moved to two - 25lb plates and so on.

i’m not a fan of rack pulls. the bar slides around and it’s hard to initiate the pull. i like to stack up aerobics steps, mats or even plates. there’s really no % of max. on these. i find that if i pull from my weakpoint, i’m a fair bit weaker from that elevation than if i was to pull from the floor.

for speed stuff i would start with 50% of your max and do 6-8 sets of 3 reps. these reps should be very fast and set up after every rep. only rest about 30-45 seconds between sets.

elitefts.com sells a hole set for about $130. i use the heavy blue bands for reverse band stuff and the minis for speed stuff but i also have a set of light and medium bands that i havne’t used yet.

Back squats- another really good night. worked up to 615 for a single. it felt like nothing. i’ll just keep adding 10lbs every back squat session. no need to get greedy. my conservative goal for the Worlds is a 650 squat. i have that easy right now.

full ROM squats
0x10
135x10
225x4
315x1
405x1
495x1
615x1 + 10lbs from last session

hack squat machine- legs together, paused at bottom, knees not locked out at top
0x10
2plates x 10
4plates x 10
6plates x 10

standing calf supersetted with seated calf

some x some

feel’n more human than human.

deads
reverse band deadlift
335x6
535x4
625x4
715x2
805x1 +20lbs from last week
855x nada - too big of a jump from last week. next week i’ll move up to 815-825 or so and then give this another crack on the last week of the training cycle.

full ROM- straight weight sumo deads
315x5
405x5
495x5
545x5- i’ll move this up to 565 next week and then 585 for the last week. all the top end stuff we’ve been doing is working. this set felt like nothing at lockout. i was good for at least 10 reps with this weight.

circuit

pulldowns - preacher curl hammer curls - lateral raises

a bunch x a bunch x 3

standing calf raises

some x some

I love the comment in the background on your 615/1 squat. Holy Shit, Meat!

that was joweeee. he was filming the squat. he was suprised at how fast it came up.

spent a good part of the day cleaning and waxing the ol’ Harley. I gave it a full service and replaced a couple gaskets that were leaking a bit. I’m getting ready to take my annual bike trip with my father in a couple weeks. we take about a week and just ride. no particular destination. we just get up, look at the weather and try to stay dry as much as possible.

here are a couple pics after the detailing today. she doesn’t normally look this good so i better get a pic or two.

here’s another-
