Fat, Bald, and D@%n Near 50

Tuesday morning workout

Squats in the Smith: 2x135x10, 2x205x5, 2x225x5
Decline leg raises: sets of 25, 17, and 13
Treadmill: 20 minutes

I was really working on ass in the grass deep squatting lately, even if it is in a freaking Smith…UGH! Worked up a good sweat. My legs are all nice and stretched.

There has been an increase in the early morning crowd. They are all doing the fitness hop from machine to machine. I get some strange looks throwing my weights around… haha. I finally figured why there is an increase in the early morning crowd. It seems a big group is taking a month end cruise in the Caribbean. I guess they are all going to get buff in a month. Some of them are like me, they need another 6 years to get buff…

JW’s thought of the day: What was the greatest thing before sliced bread?

I need some help and I think you guys can point me in the right direction. First, I’m 50, and while I’ve been in a gym off and on for a long time, I’ve never been what you call ‘strong’. Ok, here’s the deal, the recession has just closed my gym. I think I can deal with that by going to another (farther way but what can you do?).

That’s not my problem - right before it closed, I did something to the front of my shoulder. I think it was an accummulative thing, not a single event. It feels like tendons have pulled loose (not detached) from the end of my clavicle (the end nearest the mid of the chest). At this point, I can’t really do anything upper body, and even squats sometimes feels like it’s pulling when I really try to stay upright, etc. Any suggestions, PT, etc that I can do? Thanks in advance.

Thursday morning workout

Squats in the smith: 135x10, 3x205x5, 3x225x5
Jump squat in the smith: 3x115x5
Decline leg raises: sets of 20, 20, and 14
CRBT Isometric holds: 3 sets 15 seconds
Treadmill walk: 20 minutes

I threw in some different stuff today for giggles and grins. I don’t know why jump squats intrigue me like they do. I threw them in for a while. It will be interesting to see what kind of DOMS develop from them.

The past couple of days have been in eclectic mix of news. Found out the wife’s half brother has suffered a series of “substance abuse” strokes and is in the hospital in south Louisiana for a blood clot on the brain and a series of clots in his carotid artery. We did a couple of interventions in the past year but they haven’t seemed to take. It is easy for me to ‘cut him loose’, but my wife never will; which is rightfully so. We can only hope this will make the light turn on. Unfortunately I am pessimistic it will. I don’t think the guy will emerge from his death spiral. The sad thing is he is the father of 2 young boys and he is throwing them away.

I had my trip from hell given to me as a head shrinking exercise yesterday in my CEO group. Seems I’m going on a bus tour to see the Amish Ballet with all my outlaws. The bus leaves promptly at 7, with all the outlaws, 9:45 it really pulls out. Along with my outlaws there will be the Ladies Temperance movement of the Southern Baptist Women’s conference on the bus. They would be doing a lot of hymnal singing. JW will be looking for a drink!!

JW’s memory of the day: I had amnesia once – or was it twice?

Thursday night workout

Bench Press: 135x19, 225x6, 255x4, 295x1, 245x4, 205x6
Kroc Rows: 75x10, 2x85x6
Curl and press: 2x85x9, 85x6

It was ballet night for the daughter so I took off the gym. I think I shook up the Zumba ladies dropping the 85 pound dumbbell. Oh well!! Missed the second 295 rep about 3 inches off the chest. It was still good validating the 295# rep from a few weeks ago. It will be nice to see if the Kroc rows me sore.

JW’s evening musing: Two can live as cheaply as one, for half as long.

Bench is looking great. 3 plates real soon. I saw a sign at my gym advertising Zumba classes. Must be the next big thing. Feel for you on the bus tour. Know the difference in Catholics and Baptist? Catholics talk to each other when they meet at the liquor store.

Harry, I havent heard that! I do need to convert!

Friday morning workout

YTWL Shoulder warm up
Tortureplexes: 5 sets 7 reps with 115# and 70#
Treadmill: 20 minutes

Worked up a good sweat and worked out the DOMS from last night. All and all a good conditioning workout. The cruise crew was in again early this morning. My complexes seem to scare the crap out of them. It sure is strange watching the guys and their little blue dumbbell upper body work out and then doing the Thigh Master machineâ?¦

JW’s Fridays Rock! words of wit and nitwittiness: Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

Just the image of that in my mind cracks me up.

Saturday morning workout

Front delt raise in the Smith: 4x135x8
Kroc rows: 4x80x8
Lat Pull down: 2x130x8, 2x140x8
Face pulls 35x15, 3x45x15
Chest supported rows: 3x135x8, 135x6
Treadmill 20 minutes

Nice Saturday morning workout. May back is already getting sore. I feel like I did something today!

The cruise guy was back in the gym this morning. He is hell bent on getting buff with those purple dumbbells. But I have to admit the SOB is working out. This is his 8th morning in a row! Looks like a dreary day is in store for the swamp rats in Eastern NC. Its going to rain on our spring potato harvest festival. Just fed the daughter breakfast and it’s off to the sawmill to fix the shit we broke and run on Monday. What is it about never ending cycles?

JW’s random silliness: The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the ability to reach it.

Sunday morning workout:

Bench with bands: 135x10, 4x205x5
Floor Press:225x5, 235x5, 265x0 225x3, 225x2
Dumbbell pull over: 55x8, 2x65x8
Decline skull crushers: 50x8, 2x70x6
Treadmill walk: 25 minutes

Shit a fucking brick!! On my second set of floor presses, I got out of the grove and tweaked my left shoulder, a-fucking-gain. Then on the 265 attempt was a lost cause. I couldn’t get my head out of my ass from that point forward. I’m beginning to think I’m not going to be able to sneak up of 300 at all. Oh well I guess I’ll regroup again.

Tried some skull crushers on the decline bench. Got way too much shoulder in them as well. I would have to grade today’s workout as a solid C-.

JW’s Mindless observation of the mind(which JW stole from another): The Mind’s a funny thing . . . in the Summer it longs for Winter. In the Winter it longs for Summer. In the Spring . . . it heads for the Bahamas."

Great workouts! More shoulder fun. I used to do ytwli only on upper body days, but i have started doing at as part of my warmup every day. The shoulder is less forgiving as we get older.

I’ve been doing them too. I didnt document it the last couple of days. I do about 5 reps of each motion.

Monday morning workout

YTWL Shoulder warm up
Tortureplexes: 5 sets 6 to 10 reps
Treadmill: 20 minutes

Wow… It was hard to get going today, sore shoulder, poor night’s sleep, cold wet rainy morning. I almost bagged the gym morning. Gutted thru the workout. It was just pain assed hard!

Between the wife’s moodiness, the youngun stressing over EOG testing, never having any real traction and direction for the industry, AND this dreary ass weather, I guess this morning was due. Early to bed tonight. Tomorrow will be a better day.

JW’s Thought of fancy: The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.

You are too funny. Keep it up!

Thanks Skid… I’m trying to keep up with your raiper like wit.

More like a blunt instrument, but I’ll take all the compliments I can get. I’m not proud, nossir…

Tuesday morning workout:

Squat in the Smith: 135x10, 2x185x5, 2x225x5, 2x245x5
Isometric trunk twisty- rubber-bandie-doo-hickies: 3 each side for 30 second holds
Decline ab leg raises: sets of 25, 15, 7
Treadmill: 20 minutes

Nothing real fun to report, just another day at the gym. The isometric things really waxed my ass. Funny how that works at times. I hate squatting in the Smith. But it’s obvious this gym isn’t going to take me up on my offer to purchase a power rack. Oh well. Ya learn to work with what ya got to work with. On a bright side, Painter-man must be on his cruse or 6 days at 5a.m. was too much effort. He hasn’t been in using the purple dumbbells or the thigh master since Saturday.

JWs cloudy Tuesday topic: If ignorance is bliss, I must be orgasmic.

Wednesday morning workout:

Tortureplexes: 5 sets 7 reps
Treadmill walk: 20 minutes

What a way to start your 48th year on this earth, at 5 a.m. with complexes and cardio. I worked up a good sweat. Nothing remarkable to report. I’m going back tonight and do something. The daughter has rehearsals for her voice recital. She and her mom will be doing that thing for a few hours.

JW’s Wednesday wonderment: If it’s so great outside, why are all the bugs trying to get inside my house?
