Fat, Bald, and D@%n Near 50

Had my first workout at the new gym. It took me a little longer. Having to find the stuff I wanted to do. The facility is nice, more of a “health club” than a weight room. But you can work out and not have a lot of folks falling over you which is a damn nice change.

I guess I’m beginning to be a curmudgeon today. I started on my bench presses and had that shiny chrome bar. After the first set I had to find one of the old rusty bars so it would feel “right” in my hand…I don’t know if its because of the shiny bar or because today I moved another step closer to 50…ugh

Dips: 13
Bench Press: 135x5, 185x5, 2x205x5, 215x5
Incline Bench Press: 135x10, 155x8
Power Clean: 3x115x5
Standing Military Press: 2x80x10, 80x6
The exercise I saw here http://www.T-Nation.com/tmagnum/readTopic.do?id=2169738 : 25x10, 25x6
Close Grip Bench Press: 115x10, 135x10
Tricep extensions: 70x12
Squat: 135x10, 185x8

I stopped doing the decline presses, since they don’t have a decline bench. I started doing the “new back thing” because it looked pretty cool. That one worked the holy hell out of my back! It’s going to be a fun one to master.

No more bitching about the Barbie gym. I’ll miss the soccer mom teacher ladies, but the 20 something coed in the jogging top and tight britches more than made up for that. Yes I know I an a degenerate, but damn what does it hurt to look besides my damn near 50 heart?

Thanks Bunny,

I plug in the Ipod and stay in my own world. Plus the folks that come out in the morning are a bit more focused. I guess I never have been much of a gym socializer.

I am beginning to really understand why I don’t like cardio workouts on machines. It takes a PE stamp to figure the the damn thing out. All I wanted to do is set the machine to about a tension level of 8 and stroll along for 30 minutes or so. Press the start button and go…right? WRONG!! Age, weight, penis length…HELLS BELLS I have given more complete histories to my Docs as prep for a colonoscopy!! Anyway by the time I figured it out I was half way done and damn near “ran” my legs off.

Oh well…Cardio day…30 minutes on the elliptical trainer. Sweated like hell, ran the old ticker up. Even with all my bitchin’ it was a good session. I like my new training digs!

Weights tomorrow. They are more my speed. All I need is a strong back and a weak mind…

Hey J, Look for a “Quick Start” mode.

That was the quick start! I’d hate to see what a program would be. Still I am challenged with technology, so I probably hit a button wrong…oh well…It gave me somthing to express my warpped views about.

Yeah, the cardio machines always feel like the worst part of a physical.

I’m back on the Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday rotation. I like that, and the new gym lends itself to the schedule.

This morning’s work:

Dip: 13 just couldn’t get the 14th
Bench: 135x5, 185x5, 205x5, 215x5, 215x4
Incline Bench Press: 135x10, 155x8
Power Clean: 115x5, 115x5, 115x5
Standing Press: 85x10, 85x8, 85x8
New shrug cuban thingy: 15x10, 15x8
Close grip bench press: 115x10, 115x8
Tricep Ext.: 70x12
Squat: 135x10, 185x8

Had some trouble finishing off sets today. I don’t know, maybe it’s getting used to new surroundings, the youngun and wife being all stressed out over EOG testing, business sucking hind tit, birthday, and anniversary. Still It was kind of disappointing. This weekend I’ll be working out at the Y at the beach, so more new surroundings. I’m taking the family there for the holiday. Maybe I’ll ride the hawg down there.

My weight loss has kind of stalled out over the last few weeks. I did Soldog’s calorie thing. Damn I ain’t eating enough. Guess I’ll look at how I can get more protein in my diet to get the calories up. I know that wasn’t directed to me but it’s a helluva resource Soldog!

Still looks good J! and yes that site and others like it are great resources (fitday.com is another one that comes to mind.)

Hey guys, I’m new here, at least to posting, and stumbled across this blog a couple of days ago. You are speaking my language - I’m fat, bald, and hit the 5-0 later this year. Been lifting off and on for a lot of years, but my diet is my enemy. I’m in NC also, and we just have a lot of good food down here :-). Also, my son plays baseball, and unlike when I was young, it’s now a year-round sport. Takes up a ton of my time. I’ve enjoyed following along with the blog. One question I have is that it seems you are doing a lot of pushing with very little pulling. Is that by design, or just your preference?

BaseballDad, Thanks for the comment. My daughter is all artsy fartsy, so I guess I could be a balletdad. My neighbors kids play baseball 8 months out of the year between travel ball, spring and fall rec. league, and school ball. It is amazing, but I guess it keeps them off the streets!(or here in the rural east off the farm paths)

My workout is push based because that is my preference. I have never been much on cable stuff. Still I need to integrate some pulls in the workout. I’m thinking about power snatches, but I’m open for suggestions always.

Also, there are a lot better guys here than me to give advice than I!!

j-willy: My daughter starts ECU in the fall, and my mom’s from Bath. Both of which, I suspect, are down in your neck of the woods. Enough of the old home week.

I’d love to get into the oly lifts more, once I can get some strength and cardio built back up (no lungs and my joints were shot a long time ago, but nobody around that appears to know what they are doing. I certainly don’t. Some young guys around who think the racks are for bicep curls and some wanna-be MMA types that just camp out on one particular bench or piece of equipment for the night and try to look tough. I’ve got to get my diet under control though. But like yesterday, I did well all day, then didn’t get home from practice until almost 9:00 and tried to eat everything in the house. I need to suck it up I guess.

Have fun at the beach this weekend - I’ll be at a baseball tournament. As usual.

Yep, I’d say it was old home week. Or at least old home region!

Shoot me a PM with your email addy and I’ll send you some stuff that prodded me in to starting again. (other than being goaded in Vietnam for a week by my friends) Hell, I’m in the same boat as you as far as experience. Just start, take the plunge. Screw the wannabe’s and the actors. Shoot work out with the high school team…

And I’m with you on the diet thingy. That is tough on me too!!

Enjoy the tourney. I bet it will be fun. The college league starts around here in a couple of weeks. That is fun to watch.

WOW…willy, things are going great for you, nice work!

Welcome baseball dad

I just love doing shrug cuban thingies(?)
Your work outs are looking good despite your not being able to finish them all. Enjoy the beach.

Welcome BBD, great you’re so involved with your son’s activity. Turned 50, huh? Why, back when I was only 50 I could (insert tall tale here). Look forward to seeing more of your post.

Friday. Cardio day. So I spent about 40 minutes on the elliptical machine. Its funny what goes thru your mind while a re-run of the X-files is playing on the big screen in front of you and a combination of Better than Ezra, The Subdudes, and The Benjy Davis Project.

Believe it or not the thought of the day is historic real estate. My wife damn near freaked out when I said I was going to look at a condo in an historic textile mill that has been restored. The damn unit gets about $150,000 bucks of state and federal tax credits because the building is on the national historic register. Now that is the damndest thing I have ever heard! But the whole deal is cool, the mill, and the village (which was not considered a great place to live years 25 years ago) is all a historic district. The little homes sell for a TON, even in today’s market.

Still my wife damn near freaked. And I might better keep my musings more workout centric. I would hate to be called up on an “Over 35 Lifter Tribunal” and voted off for 90 days…Maybe I am spending too much time on the other forums.

Y’all have a nice weekend!

Hey Willy… workouts are lookin’ great~!

If you wanted to, you could post a picture of the “20 something co-ed” on this site… we wouldn’t mind… right guys??

Oh, and those Cuban shrug thingies… we have one one of those right beside the Korean press whatcha-macallits!

Check the rules for your historic dream house carefully. I deliver in the historic part of town and they have a real gestapo enforcing them.

The T-Cell thing kind of got off to a bad start. I’ve mostly avoided it so far. I pretty much stick to our retirement home here with an occasional visit to the new war room. Lot more civil in our little corner. Too many internet bad asses on the rest of the site.

Yeah, but this corner of the site is really a solid place to be.

Good lord I’m there with you. 46. I am a physician. Diagnostic radiologist. Weight trained in college. Not much since. SO…last August got on the low carb diet. Have lost 29 pounds. Bought the Bowflex Selectech dumbells. Getting toned. Building muscle.

Having a hell of a great time studying and trying supplements. However, it sure is hard now since college days. Keep throwing my back out dammit! So I’m there with you bro. Look forward to your posts for guys like us.

Weight day tomorrow, I have been slacking since Friday morning. At least I kept my diet under control. So tomorrow it’s back in the weight room. I need the work! I’m glad we didnt have internet access so I would feel ashamed by not working out…

Hel, We have that Hysterical District Storm troopers over here too. I know how they can be…So in reality there is no old textile mill in my future.

Oh and you and Elaikses are right, the retirement home is a much more civil place to hang out, watch the sunsets, putt around with the iron daisies, old tires, cannon balls hooked to chains, small trees, and of course the velocipedes…

Welcome cognac. We may be old here, but we are old! Hope to see more of you here!
