JEEZ!! Went to bed at midnight last night. Absolutely didn’t want to get up this morning. Upon reflection during the ride to the gym I realized I really wanted a big bench press and a big power clean. So in my unmotivated state I decided to switch my power cleans scheduled for today with the dead lifts. I think it will work out better that way.
Workout intensity was OK. I had more in me on the dead lifts. I just figured 245 was a good stopping place. Plus I had t come home and cook Willy’s Sunday family breakfast feast. Which I better get cracking. The spousal unit and our offspring will be string soon!
Y’all have a good Sunday![/quote]
You have a good Sunday too.
Every time recently when I haven’t felt like lifting and gone anyway, I’ve felt better for getting out and doing it. Yesterday, my “morning” lift ended up taking place over lunch. But afterwards I felt like a new man.
E, you and Skid both hit the nail on the head! I feel the same way actually. Its a chore to get out of bed, to make the drive, but when I WALK OUT of the gym, I feel 100% opposite as I felt going in.
If I didn’t have some honey-do’s to do and waiting for the tropical storm that didn’t come, I would have gone back this afternoon!
I endured treadmill speed intervals for 40 minutes this morning. I guess it made up for a relatively lazy remainder of Sunday.
My sorry ass sat on the front step, sprawled out and took a nap on the front porch floor. The ospreys were fishing in the river, the wind was blowing and I was laid on my front porch like a big fat lazy dog. I can only imagine what I looked like to the drive thru sightseers on their Sunday rides.

Treadmill: 13 mins
Not much to report today. I had an adequate workout. I blasted my triceps. My work spouse joined me this morning. Her work is fantastic. She has incredible drive and desire to lift. I think she hates being 44. Yesterday she had to wear cheater glasses for the first time!
It’s going to be hot and steamy in eastern NC today. I do love living in the swamp!! Seriously!!!
Thursday morning workout
Power Cleans: 135x5, 155x5, 175x1 155x5

D Bell Row: 3x65x10
Treadmill: 12 minutes
Dammit, I made the first Power clean attempt at 170 and missed the subsequent 4 tries. So I dialed the weight back for a punishment set. Next week I’ll work some sets at 155 and be done with it. I guess I was hoping I was still as strong as I was at 24 when I could clean and jerk 250#'s or so. I distinctly remember thinking “Damn Willy, you weak bastard, you’re an old now!” I just couldn’t get under the weight quick enough. I’ll be working on that transition with much more intensity.
I had a workout buddy today. Yes, my work spouse joined me. She wanted to try a more strength oriented workout rather than the toning one she has been doing for the last few months. I think she is a little bit sore! Anyway, I don’t mind her working with me, It makes the workout go a little slower but she can spot and that makes me challenge myself.
Another hot and steamy day here in North Cackeelacky. I guess I’m a really nut but I enjoy the heat and humidity.
You better keep moving the weight or else you may be passed up by your new training partner. Pound for pound, my wife is much stronger than I am. Her body shape is made for lifting heavy weight (strong glutes and hamstrings).
Lookin real good. As I’ve been working the C&Js recently I’m starting to pay a lot more attention to form. Finding out real quick just muscling it up will only get you so far.
Punishment Set?? You’ll be using chains next.
What are cheater glasses? You talking about the ones with a strap to hold them on? Reason I ask, I’ve been told recently I need glasses. Ah, aging is so much fun. Can’t see my self doing contacts.
Hey Hel, wonder if chains attached to a bar would work in a power clean move? HHHHMMMMM you have me thinking now…
I call the reading glasses you buy at the drug store, cheaters. My wife calls them ‘half wits’. Which is a pretty accurate description of me most of the time.
I am so impressed by your effort, been keeping tabs on you!
You are going to have to, have to, have to get those aerobics up or you wont lose the body fat, bro. Just a helpful hint from your Uncle Earl there. Just to let you know, you also lose the aerobic benefits and body mods faster than the anaerobic body mods, so if you dont do it, you un-do it. Hope that helps, as I had noticed you were mentioning body weight issues.
The lifting is impressive, though, great job!
I am with a 49 year old man, who is in better shape, leaner, stronger and bigger than men half his age. He is also one patient, kind and sexy you-know-what, so dont rage about the age. I am quite a bit younger than he is, and I wouldnt trade him for the World, hope to marry him soon. NO AGE RAGE!!
I really admire you more than those who have always been in shape. Its one thing to always have had something, quite another feat to have had it, lost it, and then fight to get it back.
Thanks for the compliments Blue One and welcome to the group. I appreciate the suggestion about my areobic activity. I am putting more of it in the routine and plan to ramp up the intensity.
I hate every second of it, and regardless of how easy it may get, I’ll still bitch about it…A LOT!!
Cardio day. I did another 40 minutes of treadmill intervals. Damn near died the first 20 minutes so I dialed it back on the second 20 minutes. I’m such a wuss!
I had a call the other day from a real influence in my life. This guy was the AD at ASU. While I never was an athlete in college, I took a course under this man and officiated many a high school baseball and football game with him.
I learned a lot about leadership from this guy and never realized it. He laid the foundation for ASU’s back to back to back 1 AA national championship football program.
He was asked to retire by the new administration. He took it matter of fact and re-directed his focus in life, volunteering at the College World Series and most recently at Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction Gang Camp for terminally ill children.
I have had him on my mind most of the day. I realized during my cardio hell morning, that my friend always has real meaning for his life, and he has a way to refocus that meaning as adversity faces him. I’m not sure what all that means but 25 years later and on opposite ends of the state, this gentleman is still influencing my life and the lives of others for the better.
Sorry for the digression. I’ll be lifting weights tomorrow!
Hopefully we’ve all had someone in our life who affected us in such a profound way. Your old friend demonstrates that when you’re truly at peace with yourself it’s a lot easier to deal with what life throws at you.
The reward derived from helping others far outweighs the time it takes to do it. Glad that you have known such a person.

That story made me reflect on my life and think about some people who had a big influence on me. Thank you for sharing that Willy.
