Great training Brett. I like your shiny shorts in the videos too. I’m sure it doesn’t have the same effect when I say it.

hey Brett. will you be programming your bench in the same way that you have your squat laid out?

Take a new avatar dressed the same as Upscale. Only then can I judge fairly.

If I had great shoulder health I probably would, but I’m just “testing the water” with the 3 x a week benching. All being well I think I’ll start at 6 reps a set and increase the weight and drop a rep each week and see how it goes.

First bike ride of the year.

6.5 miles took 38 minutes.

27 minutes of hell! 3.25 miles uphill the entire way, followed by 11 minutes of downhill bliss. Best time ever is 31 minutes, but that has more to do with conditions like wind and temperature than effort. My main goal today was to complete it without stopping. Managed that fine. Not looking forward to tomorrow’s saddle soreness though.

Can I be the Half-man in this scenario?

If you want. Same conditions apply.

Squats @ 363 x 2-2-2

Bench lockouts (6" off chest) @ 286 lbs x 6-6

RDLs @ 319 lbs x 2-2

Face Pulls @88 lbs x 10-10

Close Grip U/H Pulldowns @ 132 lbs x 12-10

Pushdown @ 99 lbs x 10-10

Ab rollouts (off knees) x 5-5

Did todays squats at the same weight as Monday’s but for less reps because I think I started my cycle too high. Lower back still feels a bit weak, but better than Monday.

How much elevation gain is that ride?

Now I know why you asked about hills.
Sounds like a hell of a workout! 20 minutes of solid pumping, it burns just reading that.

Thank you for outlining that squat program. I may just give it a try.

With different numbers. Of course.

George, using earthtools.org I worked out it’s 831 ft over about 3 miles (there’s a slight plateau at the top).

It doesn’t sound a lot. It certainly feels more. I guess it’s not the steepness so much as the duration or monotony of it, no chance to freewheel at all.

Null, currently I’m riding my hybrid Felt QX75 on 700x38’s. I do have a lighter, quicker road bike (Giant SCR 3) on 700x26 tyres, but it feels far less stable when it’s windy. I tend to ride that more in the summer.

Bike Ride - Top of mountain and back

6.5 mile - 37 minutes.

A bit of today’s downhill stretch. WARNING!! It’s five minutes long. But some nice scenery.

I thought that truck was going to run you over. Good thing he was on the wrong side of the road too…lol. Good stuff Brett, I love all the open country.

Embo - Liked the wrong side of the road gag. Nice.

The trucks aren’t a problem, in fact I rarely meet a vehicle at all. Today was a busy day. The dangerous thing is the mountain ponies who stand in the middle of the road and refuse to move and the sheep, especially when they’ve got lambs with them. If they are split either side of the road, the lambs will just run straight out in front of you and with sheer drops off to the left it’s not what you want to happen. Still it adds to the excitement.

and that, everyone, is possibly the most scenic part of Wales. For proper countryside with things like trees, lochs (with the obligatory monster) and castles follow this link

Sorry Brett

I get the continuous uphill grind - three years ago when I had just started logging here, I wrote up a race report on the first mountain bike race I did. Pure up-hill, 5.3 miles and 2062 feet of elevation in 76 minutes.

"5.3 miles of unrelenting pain… " what I said about it afterwards

Sounds like a bitch.

I’m only just getting back into biking so I’m currently just going to the top of the mountain and back. I have done all the way over and back. That ride is 10.2 miles with 1505 feet of elevation (my best time is 53 mins), but I still can’t compete with 2000ft+, that’s a whole different level (excuse the pun) of steep.

Have you done any rides like that since or are you planning any?

Or was once enough? LOL

Squat (with pause in the “hole”) @ 385 lbs x 1-1-1

Bench Press @ 242 lbs x 7-6

Face Pulls @ 88 lbs x 10-10

RDLs @ 341 lbs x 1-1

One Arm DB rows @ 124 lbs x 8-6

Leg Curls @ 80 lbs x 8-7

EZ Curls @ 77 lbs x 10-6

Ab rollouts (off knees) x 5-5

Finally had a good workout, the last 4 or 5 have been shit, mainly due to the fact that I have still been lifting despite nursing a slight lower back injury and a lack of focus due to not having a definite plan.

Back is nearly 100% and the squats felt much better as a result. Got a plan now too.

Decided to drop the box squats, they just didn’t feel right and I felt that they were trying to make me squat a different way. I squat up and down, not back. So I’ve replaced them with pause in the hole squats, which I think will have a better carryover because they are done exactly the same way I squat and should give me more “Oomph” at the bottom. I’m trying to slow down my negative too.

Think I’ve decided on my barbell set and I’m going to get a pair of bumper plates too, so I can have a proper go at the Olympic lifts. Very exciting.

3 singles at 385 with pause in the hole.

Wow… just… wow.
