Exercises Everyone Should Be Doing

Exercises Everyone Should Be Doing:

Everyone and I mean everyone should do the almighty Glute Ham Raise!!

One-arm DB snatches. These are the shit. And people look at you really funny, and the whole DB area tends to clear out.

I like taint presses and gooch raises.

Have you considered other variations of the snatch?

It it well known that the clean snatch requires a high degree of technical proficiency and typically requires elaborate planning and extended practice sessions before ever completing a successful repetition. Additionally, it is high maintenance in that it requires increasingly complex assistance work while at the same time the training frequency must almost always be reduced.

The dumbell snatch on the other hand is more versitile, provides the same rewards, and has few negative side effects. It is easy enough to execute on the first try, can be performed repeatedly without fear of overtraining, and is very low maintenance. [/quote]

Best little bit of writing I have come across in a while… beautifully written, subtle, and slightly dry… too funny… my wife agrees fully… four thumbs up from us…

Some that haven’t been listed yet:

1 arm BB Snatches
1 arm BB Cleans
1 arm BB Jerk
1 arm BB Press
1 arm BB Overhead Squat

I put togeth a couple of circuits using these lifts. I do one of the circuits for higher reps after my workouts in place of traditional cardio. Today I did the snatches. Then without rest moved to the press. And finally OHS.

I would also add FS, OHS, repetitious OL, and SLDL to the list.

In addition to those listed, weighted pushups.

To the curls guy - why would you need curls in an “essentials” list if you already have chins and rows?

I consider it essential too. But for me it’s more of a strength thing. My short-term goal is 135 on a heavy-duty EZ Bar for reps. I’m not too far off now.

Why do you need weighted pushups if you already have bench and dips?

Curls help my chins. And make my arms look beautiful.

Clean and Press for about everything.

Weighted Burpees for conditioning.

And Tire Flips for everything else.

Your word play sparked the idea right away, although I did spend a few minutes choosing a good set of contrasting characteristics.

Anyone who has made a serious commitment to the snatch (as I have for over 20 years now) will probably tell you that the novelty of rotating between the possible variations fades quickly but the rewards and growth resulting from dedication to a single exercise are well worth the trouble.

PS: Keep up your trademark levity, it is sorely needed throughout these forums. The whooshing sounds CS frequently refers to seem to be getting louder and louder.

PPS: Note to original poster. Sorry for the hijack, but this topic has had more action than squat rack curls.

For a horizontal pushing movement - I’d actually take bench out. Call me crazy, but I don’t like pinning my scapulae down under heavy load.

I can see OneEye’s point - if you want to get to the point where you can curl big weights, you have to curl.

Can’t see why you’d need them if already doing chins, though - I understand that curls can help bicep strength a little to improve chinning ability a touch, but why not just work on the ROM of chins that are weak with chinning variations?

ok … THAT part was a furthering of the initial “snatch” comments … sometimes it’s difficult … layers upon layers of total bullsh!t … often i don’t even remember what i said in the first place! it’s like inversely antagonistic contrarianism, if you know what i mean

i could teach a class on e-sarcasm, but nobody would get it

Tell it brother. People give me a wide berth when I’m doing these. You can hear them think, “What’s that supposed to work?”
