Hi do any of you guys out there know the list of some good universities in exercise science? Thanks.
As a recent graduate of grad school (Masters in Exercise Science at UC-Davis), I have a few words of advice. Grad school is what you make of it. If you are going to grad school for class room learning you will disappointed almost anywhere you go. Find a school with a program that has a broad diversity of curriculum and that offers teaching and research assistantships. I learned a lot in the class room, but learned about 100 times more by teaching others and working on several different research projects. BTW, don’t discounts schools that only offer physiology programs. Find out what the PhD’s are working on and contact them if you are interested about the school. I’m sorry that I don’t have a school to recommend but there are so many factors. Aside from school, educate yourself by reading widely (books, journal articles, T-mag, other sites, etc.). Also work on getting a certification from the NSCA, ISSA, or ACSM. If is another perspective and will look great on your resume. You are in charge of your education. Always remember that. There is no perfect program, but there are lots of good ones. Sorry for the rant, but I’m telling you exactly how I feel.
Hey Jason, I am not looking for graduate courses i am looking into undergrad programs.I was actually looking into Uni of Nebraska and Uni of Pittburgh. How can i find out about what the Phd’s are working on and those teaching assistantship things?
Sorry about the misunderstanding (undergrad vs. grad). As an undergrad, you will not be able to do much in the way of teaching, but you can definately get involved in the various research projects that the professors are working on. Your best bet would be to start doing internet searches using key words “exercise science”, “exercise physiology”, “biomechanics” or anything else that you are interested in. Most programs have at least some sort of information on the web and a contact email for the department head or some other person in charge of the program. Just email these people and explain that you are interested in learning what the different faculty members are doing research in. Also ask if they ever include undergraduate assistants. Also find out if they have a “Adult Fitness Testing Program” or something where they do max treadmill tests, body composition measurements, etc. You can often get involved in these types of programs as an undergrad and learn a ton about real life applications of the stuff you will learn in class. So my best advice is to get on the net and start emailing dept. heads and ask as many questions as you want answered. These people did not become dept. heads by accident and will appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in their program. Don’t be shy. Ask what you want to ask. If they don’t treat you well, you probably don’t want to go to school there anyway.
I live in mass, and plan on majoring in exercise science or athletic training, and springfield college(in springfield obviously) is supposed to be great in athletic training and umass boston has a very good exercise science program.
I too am looking at springfield, my sister went there and liked it a lot. Where in mass are you living?
I know Nebraska has a program specifically geared toward being a “strength and conditioning coach.” If this is what you are wanting. Something else to consider is to get a grad position there they give preference to those who attended Nebraska as an undergrad. Getting a grad assitanceship at a university is pretty much determined by you knowing the strength coach or knowing someone else who does (this is looking far into the future though.)
To find out about specific schools programs just type in a university in the search thing. I.E. www.tennessee.edu. Then look around the sites, look at the faculty, some even have whole pages devoted to certain departments. Most schools also give you the option of applying right on line. Also do a search on the engine here as this question has been asked before.
I live 20 minutes north of boston, wilmington.
no kidding, I live in reading. I’m a junior in highschool right now so I got sometime left to decide where to go. I’m looking out west for colleges, basically to get away from new england.
Having shoulder length hair, I must say, many times it is a hassle, but I enjoy having the longer hair. I know when I get into the workforce I’ll have to cut it off, but for now, I am going to enjoy the length and the fact that I’m not bald
holy fuck! I live 2 minutes from reading, right off west st. I went to austin a little in middle school.
New England basically sucks, but I like boston.
Guys, sorry about that last post of mine. That post was supposed to go to the head shaving thread, my bad!
Except for Boston and Cape Cod, I don’t like it here. Don’t like the weather nor the “atmoshere” so to speak. Looking forward to go to college out of state and experience something new.
