Exercise Induced Calorie Deficit

Using only increased exercise for fat loss, how does the metabolism react as opposed to just dieting? Does it down regulate just as it would if dieting? If a trainee just used extra workouts for the deficit, what should be done when results cease? Decrease workouts for a while then ramp it back up to continue fat loss? Any articles or research on this? Thanks
