I am happy he is doing it! He is obviously respected for being strong, but now this will put an end to all the B.S. online speculations and would give him complete legitimacy in powerlifting.
I don’t even care if he crushes 715 (which, seeing how that 700 looked like a 135, is entirely possible) - even if he benches, say 650-670 (which for him looks like an opener) that would still be, what, a top 10 bench in history? Fuck yeah!
Are the elbow wraps he has on in that 695 video legal in any raw federations?
I dunno about them, but elbow sleeves such as rehbands and TK’s are legal in the APA. I’d imagine they’d be legal in the SPF too, where he’ll be competing.
According to their site elbow sleeves are not allowed while benching. Only squat/deadlift. Same with the APA. IDT any fedrations allow them during bench.
I really hope he gets it. As easy as that looked I’ve never seen him pause a rep. But he also doesn’t bounce the bar at all so it will hopefully not make that much of a difference.

I’ve always been curious to see what top-level benchers could do if they had to use stricter form, i.e. a full pause on the chest. No, I’m not one of those “IF IT’S NOT A FULL PAUSE IT DOESN’T COUNT YOU CHEATERS” guys, but it’s something I find legitimately interesting. I’m a purist of sorts when it comes to lifts, but lifts like that still deserve massive amounts of respect.
He toyed with 600 for 6 reps in that one video. Un-frickin’-real.
My predictions:
Just go for 720. He is doing a bench only right? So who gives a fuck if he bombs, if his sole aim is to break the world record? Why tire himself with 1st and 2nd attempts. Just go for it - if he doesn’t make it, screw it. As long as he doesn’t get injured he can do any meet in the near future and hit, say, 675 bench and be on the PLwatch top 5 of all time…
