EPA / DHA ... what are good brands?

Hey guys and girls. I would like to know if anybody could recommend a good brand for EPA / DHA supplements. What has worked well for you? thanks

bump

Although more costly than an oil, I like
the Twinlab Max EPA capsules. Most brands
have much more other oils along with the
DHA/EPA and so your total caloric intake
from the product is pretty high if you’re
taking 6 grams per day of DHA/EPA. The
Twinlab product is concentrated enough
that the calories are pretty reasonable.

Agree with Bill…TwinLab MaxEPA…concentrated and a good way to get those 6 grams in…

Coromega also gives you about 6grams of EPA/DHA for the same calories as Twinlab MaxEPA (200cal). Although, I am not sure which one is more affordable, I can’t imagine it’s the Coromega, because it comes to about a whopping $7 a day!

Thanks for the input guys. Bill, when you say other brands have much more oil (and thus calories) per gram of EPA/DHA, is this oil still in the form of omega-3’s ? I don’t mind taking in the extra calories since as an athlete I have a lot of calories to take in. Thanks again.

Bill, correct me if i am wrong but I always thought that the reccommendation was to get 6 grams of fish oil a day, not 10 grams of EPA/DHA. I agree this would significantly bump the amount of oil you would have to take. I thought that research showed 6 gramds total of fishoil was the amount needed. Doesn’t it get excessive to take in so much more (to get 10grams of EPA/DHA you would need about 20 grams of fish oil. Also I thought Lyle Mcdonald and Elzi Volk also reccomended just 6 total grams of fish oil. I would really appreciate your response to this as both my wallet and diet can’t afford any excess calories. Thank you.

I’m not an expert on the matter personally.
I just rely on what John Berardi told
me when I met him on Orlando, which was
that the amount of DHA/EPA really should
be 6 grams, not just 6 grams of total oil
(which in terms of DHA/EPA is much less
than 6 grams.)

In a recent “Appetite…”, JB suggested 10 grams of combined EPA and DHA a day, including sources form flax oil, salmon meat, and capsule supplements.

Bill, I just did a google search on the matter and found that both Elzi and Lyle reccomend getting 3.65g of omega-3 a day based on research. So concentration is important in helping to keep calories low. Your right that the TwinlabTwinEPA Extra Strength Fish Oil is the most concentrated BUT most of their value comes from EPA and I think DHA is the one you want to concentrate on (according to Elzi). Although I know EPA can convert to DHA I’m not sure how efficient the process is. Anyway probably doesn’t matter in the long run. However, I would love to hear WHY JMB feels you need 6gr of omega-3 and not just 3.65 per MFW. He is extremely intelligent so I don’t doubt he knows what he is talking about. Anyway hope that helps out a bit.

Somebody else (in a different thread) recommended the fish oils at puritans pride dot com. Has anybody else used this brand? Good stuff? It is fairly inexpensive with their buy 1 get 2 free deal going on… Your thoughts welcome.

steve, i may try them, sounds like one hell of a good deal. I hope they are legit and not rancid though. Any other people check puritanpride?

actually you get 300 caps for $10.45 At costco i get 300 for 8 bucks. the caps have the same epa/dha too, so forget that.

I’m kinda new to adding “good fats” into my system. I am currently taking Udo’s Floral Blend, do I have to or should I still be taking fish oil on top of my fat intake???
