Emily's About-Time Training Log

I spoke to maintenance about my casting issue and he’s suggested I restart my phone (“do you ever restart your phone?”) and unplug and replug the TV. I’m a little outraged that I have to do these things for myself before he takes over and then just reports back that the issue is resolved. It’s hard to find good help.

I’m loving this program. We’ve now done, 5 workouts in, a different lunge and squat variation each of the workouts. My learning goal is being nicely satisfied and I don’t feel that I’m sacrificing a single thing - workouts are challenging me enough that I feel happy and good at the finish. (By which I mean tired and shitty, of course, but in a good way.)

Still having trouble with casting, which the engineer is as puzzled by as me. He thinks the problem is Apple, because he doesn’t like Apple.

20 minutes zone 2 TM. I was pressed for time, but it felt SO GOOD. Now I have time because husband fell asleep and didn’t shower, which he’s doing now. Then my turn.

We have a party today, so more challenges, which I will fail, but presumably it will be a reasonable fail and not a colossal one. Trying not to sweat it. I do not want to get weird. I think I’m getting better at harm reduction.

Oh my goodness. You guys, my son is doing strongman stuff now! The party yesterday was SO MUCH FUN. I almost died of it. My first log toss!

I was the last one picked for kickball, though. (Again! lol)

Today: slow hike with Buttons, 2.5 mi.

So amped for your son! If I can provide any guidance, help, recommendations, etc, please hit me up.

Aw, thanks! But I don’t mean on any kind of formal level. They were just playing. He’s far and away my most athletic (and least studious) and has been increasingly into lifting for the past couple of years, but he’s a butcher, and that’s physically demanding. I suspect that he’s been moving in this direction for a while, maybe a long while, but I don’t usually hang out with him with his friends for more than a couple of hours, and then it’s typically focused on something - we all attend a whatever, then maybe go for a drink after. Saturday was my daughter-in-law’s “adult field day” birthday party, which brought different things to the forefront than we usually see. Here’s how it looks when we’re at my house, lol. From my birthday in April:

This son is on the left. I love this photo because all of the kids are going so hard - it just makes my heart happy. We’re a competitive bunch. My husband and I didn’t necessarily show well at adult field day with the 30-year-olds, but we did come out and play hard, so I felt pretty good about it. I was on a team with three women and two men for kickball, with four men and one woman on the other team, and we only lost 16-21, which I think is fairly commendable.

I invited my son to invite all of his friends to our family camping event in August because they were so much fun. And because husband and I both feel that we need another shot at the log throw.

Yesterday did CG Beginners Day 8/20. Love, love, love this program. At one point, probably during the flies, I’d thought that I need to search wrist strengthening here on TN, and just after I thought it she talked about wrist positioning. Helpful (I was positioned correctly, so do need to strengthen). During maybe the RDLs she reminds “hips back” and so good, a quick form check. I am FEELING these workouts, which stuns me, as I’ve dropped weights. But I’m doing higher, slower reps, and we’re only now, 8 workouts in, beginning to repeat lifts, so a much, much broader program than I’ve done previously. I’ve always just done very standard stuff. OH press, bench, curls, DLs, squats. This is so much more varied, so I guess things are hitting differently. I like it.

X4 sets
REAR STEP LUNGES
X4 sets
STAGGERED RDL
X3 sets
GOBLET ‘PAUSED’ SQUATS
X3 sets
ARNOLD PRESS
X3 sets
CHEST FLYES
X3 sets
LANDMINE ROW
FINISHER:
30/30
REAR STEP LUNGES (one side)

I’ve moved to every other day with the program, so my awesome “roll into T-ransformation 2025” timeline may not work. But I’ll worry about that another day.

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday. We’d planned to hit a steakhouse that doesn’t take reservations, but when we got there it was closed (Wednesdays are the only day not open…what a weird schedule). So we wound up eating Chinese at a place I think of as healthy as Chinese goes…quality ingredients, not greasy. But honestly I was a little grossed out. Also, and this is a hyuuuuuge win, the waiter, whom we know from going there over the years (my husband is a crazy-generous tipper and we’re both outgoing and also gluttons), brought us three bowls of white rice because I love it so much - and together we only finished one. We did share some pork fried rice (YOLO) but rice is sort of my thing. Anyway, we came home with a ton of food, which husband can eat today.

During dinner my son called to tell me that his father called 911 for heart stuff. He went to the ED, then was transferred to a bigger hospital for surgery. Anyway, as this concerns matters at my house, my husband wound up going at 10:30 to pick up kids 45 minutes away and bring them back here to sleep. He’s just the best guy. Like, “happy birthday, dude! I wore my good underwear, but instead of sex will you go rescue my family?” Although he offered. No one had to ask.

So to sum up, no workout today. The treadmill is right above the kids asleep on the couch.

Day 9/20 CG beginner program, 15 minutes TM sprints. It all felt FANTASTIC. Lotta stress here. My ex-husband is dying, it looks like, and I’m trying as best I can to support the kids.

We did go to MA to celebrate husband’s birthday with my stepdaughter and granddaughter and go to the beach. It was supposed to be a big pile of us - blended family event - so it was quiet and sad, but still good.

I ate my feelings (ice cream cake and Mexican food) and am up 3lbs this morning.

Lots going on here, I hope you are doing okay. Glad you got to celebrate your husband’s birthday, even if it wasn’t quite the family take-over you wanted.
Hang in there!

Sorry to hear that.

I can’t think of anyone better to be around if something bad were happening, but make sure you care for yourself too.

Thanks. Hard stuff to navigate. And I’m watching the kids start to crack. I believe son #3 is on the verge of launching himself at son #1. As #s 3 and 4 are 15 months apart and lifelong best friends, it’ll be a big come-undone, with their sister wringing her hands and offering advice, which will just irritate everyone. I’m on the inside of all this, but also on the outside.

He had an aortic dissection, had emergency surgery, and had trouble waking after. It took a long time (days) for him to become somewhat lucid. Additionally, his legs are paralyzed, which they say is permanent. My ex has been vaguely suicidal since I met him (to which I was drawn like a moth to flame at 23) and has always been very clear that he doesn’t want to live impaired. But he may have to. So. Meanwhile, until yesterday his memory was resetting every time he slept, so my kids had to keep telling him about the loss of his legs. Like, I’m dying of it. I have two little boys with me again, and we’re all going to work out together in a few minutes. Which I do not expect to go well, but I can try. I’m going to set the alarm for ridiculously early tomorrow so I can spend some time with my treadmill before work. I can almost always find calm on the treadmill.

(Responding to you, @SkyzykS, but fell into processing - you don’t need to come up with a response, lol.)

Okay, CG day 10/20 done. Five minute WU, no cool down. Not the smoothest workout ever, but it’s in the books.

I’ll just be like a wall so if you want to throw stuff at it and see what sticks, I can do that.

I just got some awesome cookies from the farm/market behind the house and coincidentally situated between my buddys house where I do the welding and mine. Its actually hard to avoid.

So if your one son ever gets a hankering for some really awesome cookies, this is a good place for them.

I’m going to nap and enjoy a successful rain day.

It does sound like a very trying time for everybody, and I hope you can find your happy place on the treadmill.
Those aortic dissections sound horrible. Attitude and who you are at the core of your being plays a big part in how people recover from tragedy, and whether they can tolerate life afterwards.

Yes, which doesn’t bode well for him, which means it doesn’t bode well for my kids.

I switched the alarm to workday sleep-in (6:30) in the middle of the night. Sleep > treadmill, I decided.

Okay, good, I’m calling today Sunday. I honestly thought I had covid yesterday. I had that buzzing feeling during sessions, having to fight to stay awake and attentive, even after an 8 hour sleep, and ached all over. I knew that some of the ache was DOMS - I did Girvan both Sunday and Monday - but there was also some chest pressure and etc. Came home and fell asleep on the husband’s lap, whining and fretting (do I tell the 4 kids I’ve been hugging and slobbering on in the cardiac ICU waiting room that I have covid, and note that not only did I slobber as well on every single child, but shared one’s water at dinner on Monday?). I woke up from that 30 minute nap with the covid pretty much resolved, but slept in again today. I may call another Sunday tomorrow, we’ll see.

In summary, these Girvan workouts are terrific. My triceps in particular are screaming. And I’ve gone down in weights as well as reduced time spent lifting.
