Hi all, I’ve been lurking around here for time eternal. Well, a few years, anyway. I honestly can’t say why I haven’t taken my interest beyond academic curiosity until now.
Anyway, about me. I’m 22, 6’0" 150 lbs, skin and bones, a psychology major, and an Infantryman in the Illinois National Guard since late 2009. I was one of the skinny douches who managed to gain weight at basic, hitting 170 lbs at the end of AIT, probably the best shape I’ve ever been in. Returning to the relaxed pace of guard life, inactivity, a fast metabolism, and shitty eating habits stripped all those gains in short order, knocking me back to my pre-army weight of 150.
My current motivation? No offense to my brothers in uniform, but my unit houses an unhealthy number of fatties, burnouts and slobs. It kind of pisses me off, it’s a bit disrespectful to the oath they took. I guess my main motivation was the realization that, when shit hits the fan, my lack of strength lumps me into the same group as those guys, as far as getting the job done.
I’ve kind of become what I’ve always hated. That definitely pains me to admit, but it’s true. Little 150 pound me is going to have a hell of a time lugging a wounded 210 pound guy out of the shit. Unacceptable. I started this log to keep me honest, motivated, and get some advice. Any input is greatly appreciated.
My program is Rip’s Starting Strength. I’ve been on it for 2 weeks.
Current numbers (5x5, weight in lbs):
Squat (ATG)-140
Overhead Press-60
Deadlift-180
Bench-110
I’ve been avoiding the power clean, as I haven’t done it before, but a friend from school is coming with me Monday to make sure I’m doing it right, so I should have numbers up for it within a week or so. I’m also doing curls, 3x10 @ 25 lbs.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any input.
