I’m astounded at the drama over this deadlift. It’s actually so cringe seeing people side with Brian and Ed so sheepishly.
I’ve never steeped myself in drama in this sport at all, but this shit is getting ridiculous. If this were solely about the verity of a record in a competition setting, then there would be totally zero drama (okay, maybe a little drama).
Half the drama is for content, as @oldbeancam stated. The other half is a result of people who are genuinely butthurt over the fact that there’s a solid chance Thor is gonna snatch the record and Eddie and his entourage low-key cannot stomach that. Now a 500kg deadlift is incredible, but this cinematic self-avowed borderline heroic view Ed has for himself for being the first person to do is a bit silly. Like actually, silly. We hardly remember the first 800 or 900lb pull, and only at 1000lbs do the collective few big fans of strength actually know who the first was to do so.
So yeah, I can’t be the only one legitimately sick of Eddie Hall’s charade in regard to his overplayed strength feats. I’d also like to mention he’s taken the biggest shit on the integrity of the sport in the last 30 years since the OD and Jon Pall stint. At least that remained unbeknownst to fans until current times when your favorite strongman could be seen with a facemask of CBD cream while live streaming video games directly to your screen. (grain of salt that one, I may regret it in the morning :D)
Social media is poison for this sport. I don’t blame Eddie: I blame the contingent that supports them. Eddie is a showman, and is doing what gets him fans. What gets him fans is to be a degenerate, so he does that. The so-called fans of the sport want it destroyed.
I know Doyle Kenady did 900 first, but how many people even remember his name? 800? No idea until I googled it (Vince Anello in 1975, I had guessed it was Jon Cole).
Come to think of it, Benedikt’s 1015 record in powerlifting has stood since 2011. You’d think someone would have got it by now.
Brian Shaw though with his disingenuous “objectivity”, his passive/aggressive BS towards Thor (and other strongmen who are his equals), the over-arching litany of excuses…I can’t even watch the guy’s videos anymore.
Also, off topic shout out to the Stoltman Brothers Luke and Tom, who will be attempting records in the log press and the Atlas stone as part of the overall program (on different days).
These guys are definitely old school type dudes, very fun to watch.
I think there needs to be a distinction between an independent world record and a strongman world record. You can set a world record for a plank hold, it just isn’t a record for a specific sport. These records getting set outside of competition can be guinness type world records but I can’t see how they would count as a strongman record. Either way I’m going to be watching and cheering for them to get broken.
FTR record, I also clicked on the Oberst video without reading the “weight” in the title so I thought he was actually be attempting the world record log press in training. I cannot express how disappointed I am.
