Not to nit pick, but Jones was in prison for robbery Before strongman. He went in at 18, got out in '94 at 25 years old and was competing in WSM the next year! I searched just to see how big dude was (6’11", 320) and was blown away by that story.
I learned that Jones was the huge guy that Brad Pitt kills in the beginning of Troy (spoiler alert). And also the huge guy in Fury Road.
Unfortunately I’ve been home all day since the pandemic with little more to do than watch YouTube. At the end of the video Oberst acts as if the sport is in danger and I quote “I’ve spent ten years building this sport up.” They’re all acting as if this deadlift record set in a gym is the death of strongman as we know it and all that is doing is making a ton of people who know nothing about strongman outside of the four of them freak out. It’s honestly sad to me that they’re basically putting a limit on what can be done to save Eddie’s ego.
If they were truly for the sport and the growth of it, they would let this happen, let Thor get a check and have him do something even bigger in comp once this pandemic is over. One of the biggest things that I loved about strongman growing up was the grind and grit all these men had. I think that’s why I loved all the medleys, rep events and stone load for time.
Static strength is impressive, but being strong AND fast is where the insanity comes into play especially when one is at the end of their rope, riddled with injury and having to tap deep inside to finish something.
The reason I bring this up is because part of being strong is being able to control your emotions. Being able to attack things even when they suck. Life isn’t fair and when you show mental and emotional weakness, you’re not strong. With all these men whining about a single lift, it takes away a lot of that for me and really makes me rethink how much I enjoy this sport as it is.
Oberst mentioned he was worried about bills. You think if somebody was going to pay Oberst 100k if he completed a lift that anyone would stand in his way?
Wouldnt this be like the first “Strongman” deadlift to even have the same equipment and rules. I mean they used to just claim what ever newest Strongman Deadlift implement was the Strongman Deadlift record. Whether it be a 4" box of coins or the 10" elephant bar or what ever.
I’ll give Shaw and Oberst the benefit of the doubt. I think they’ve actually convinced themselves of the “purity” of their “stance” on the “controversy”. But let’s call a spade a spade -there is jealousy and envy that the people willing to cut a check for any records set, are not offering them (especially Shaw) equal opportunity to do so. It’s human nature, I don’t even blame them, I expect it.
The exposure for Thor (and the Stoltmans) will be unprecedented, because they’re the only game in town right now! The views will be huuuge, and all the other strongmen competitors will be on the outside looking in.
p.s. LMAO that anyone watching the Iron Biby gym “WR” in the log press (Oberst’s example for why Thor shouldn’t do a “gym lift” WR) gave the lift any credibility, given how the dude basically manhandled it so easily; no disrespect to IB, but his minions should have at least put enough weight on the bar to make it look “hard”…
This goes back a long ways too. With Shaw trying to get WSM (or Record Breakers idk or both) to let him attempt world Records with stuff and they kept saying no. Like the Atlas Stone and then they let Stoltman do it instead.
Probably why Iron Biby threw up that (relatively bogus) gym “WR” video of his log press. He’s just as strong at log press as Luke Stoltman but is not being given the chance (afaik) at the exposure or the money.
-Thor hasnt pulled it yet and everybody is acting like its a done deal
I think that is a great point.
-If Thor misses it it will crush him personally.
I dont think so. He isnt talking shit like he has already done it. He is clapping back to those attacking his character but never has he said I guarantee etc.
-IDK if the exposure will be good for strongman
…I am not sure they know ESPN is covering it? The first time EVER that a strongman anything has been covered Live by ESPN. It will be great for Strongman.
-“I dont want Strongman to go in the wrong direction.”
You mean like fixing events to get a certain person to win? OD Wilson and Eddie’s WSM’s have been discussed in this thread but Kazmeir wasnt even allowed to compete for a few years.
Oberst posted a video again about it. Honestly (outside of Nick Best) the only people with a big issue about this are the History Channel crew and the mounds of “fans of strongman” who just came around in the last 3 or so years. No one is talking about the 4 other records being held potentially under quarantine because it doesn’t benefit their channel views. Talking shit about the Stoltmen brothers doesn’t generate as many views as “IS THOR HAPHTHOR THORS POWER GYM THE MOUNTAIN FROM GAME OF THRONES GOING TO DEADLIFT 501KG??!?!?! EDDIE HALL IS PISSED!!!”.
Best thing I’ve watched about all of this so far is Kalle’s video on the whole scenario.
