The comments in that post are hilariously brutal.
Man, looks like strongman is reaching powerlifting levels of cattiness. I used to root against Thor because he was the obvious candidate to win. Itâs like rooting against LeBron, nothing against him aside from being too damn good at the sport.
Does it make me a bad person for noticing he used the word âcheckâ and not âchequeâ?
Americans donât use the word âChequeâ, and by extension some others do not. It is a UK/Canada/Commonwealth word.
If Thor does this. And I think he will. There will forever be a question mark over it.
Call me a cynic - but the draw of putting one over Eddie, and the massive pay check on offerâŠ
Sorry - but no dice. Its like the marathon that was run in under 2h. Its not legitimate.
England and America are two countries separated by the same language
Dude, honestly, this 501 is going to count imo. Thor is such a lovable guy and Ed is just a sycophant at this point. The entire world, regardless of whoâs dick they have in their mouth want to see Thor smash this record.
Ya, I like Eddie (guess Iâm in the minority), but I like watching records fall.
Someone needs to photoshop a world record for âWhiny Bitchâ.
The question mark over it is absolutely true. Whether everyone agrees with the question mark or not, it will be there. I agree on that. The marathon under 2 hours was far different in terms of advantages. A home gym with your own bar is definitely a big advantage, but the guy who ran the marathon had a rotating group of pace runners, like 8 of them, in front of him the entire time to shield him from the wind, and a crew that ran alongside him giving him water and whatever else he needed. Plus he even wore a pair of shoes that people say are pretty much cheating themselves. The discerning factor here is that the safeguards in the marathon were there to assist him completing the sub 2-hour marathon, and as such it doesnât stand as an official world record, and nobody said it would, and the safeguards that Thor has implemented are there to hold him to a standard, so he can at least argue that the record will stand.
All in all, May 1st doesnât even decide the legitimacy of this lift. If he can do 501 or 502 in a competition later when things reopen, THEN this will be a valid lift. If he can never replicate it or one-up it, the controversy will always remain.
FFS you guys are falling for kayfabe againâŠ
I havenât competed at that level but I have done lower level shows including travelling overseas. Lifting in a competition is a big advantage - there are going to be people who get worse in a competitive environment but I think we can assume this is not the case for WSM competitors, they would have been filtered out in the lower levels.
The big advantage Thor has here is he doesnât have to fly 10 hours and sleep in a strange bed. But if Thor did this lift at Icelandâs Nastiest Lumberjack as the first event then walked away, does that really make the lift more legit?
Konstantinovs did 948 in a deadlift suit, 939 was his raw record. The 948 was done in 2006 and is is still a record.
At this point, I disagree.
Eddie Hall most certainly is capable of kayfabe, but his ego would hurt so much from not being able to endlessly expound on The Deadlift âŠso.
Brian Shaw lacks the imagination to do kayfabe.
Oberst is not smart enough to do kayfabe.
Every successful athlete always performs better in competition.
The criticism about being able to control the conditions and the environment are valid though.
I met the dude and significantly disagree. Dude is very much a showman.
He had a ârivalryâ with Eddie Hall before this. If that was real, he would be cheering Thor on. If it wasnât real (which it wasnât), itâs proof of concept.
Yaâll are getting in too deep in the storyline here. This is all done to build up excitement for the lift and, by extension, the sport of strongman. Even haters will tune in in hopes of Thor missing or to be able to later explain why it wasnât legit.
This is a work guys. Appreciate it for that, but if you take it seriously it looks goofy.
Youâve never started off messing around with a bunch of âbuddiesâ, and then suddenly it goes just a little bit too far and starts to get awkward?
You seem unusually even tempered. I think youâre projecting that onto men (boys?) that are a lot more egocentrically invested.
Follow the money a bit more. Who is getting the exposure here? Who is getting paid? Who is being left in the cold?
I have met a fair amount of them and know that many of them know how to work a crowd and that they are big into growing the sport of strongman. This is an easy way to do itâŠ
Honestly, go back a few years and rewatch the Hall and Oberst rivalry over the log press. I have heard this song before
And which sport is now going to have more fans, which means more payouts and bigger venues? Maybe even an opportunity to discuss a players union, or going back to contracts like in IFSA.
