Eating While Living with the Parents?

Hey I was was just wondering if anybody has the same problem as I do or any advice.I’m 17 and still living with my parents, and I fully understand the importance of nutrition, but they don’t. I get on my mom about trying to get more good food like boneless skinless chicken breasts, fish, veggies, and whole oats.

Unfortunately that stuff is pretty pricey, so we’ll have some but not a lot so I’ll eat optimally about half of the week. Anybody else going through the same problems or have any advice?

Do you have a job? I suggest getting one and using the money to buy your own food. Make a out a detailed for the week, and shop weekly to minimize food waste. Look for meat that is marked down because it’s close to the sellby date - cook all the meat and store it in the freezer.

Find a farmers market or a pick-your-own veggies place to get cheep produce.

Try to get a small part of the backyard squared off for a garden and plant some peppers and stuff.

If you want it bad enough, you’ll figure it out.

One of the things that worked the best for me is offering to cook meals with the stuff they buy.

I live near a Trader Joe’s and can get a pack of 3 chicken breasts for under 4 bucks, dozen eggs for 2 bucks, gallon of milk for about 2 bucks, pack of pasta for a buck, bananas for 20 cents each, you get the idea. It may require going to different stores for different items, but you can definitely eat well on a budget.

get a job.

Get a job and since you are buying your own food, they might give you “your share” of the money to buy food they would spend on you…but only if they love you…if they dont love you then they wont help you and they are trying to clog your artieries with bacon fat every morning to get rid of you!!

I’m 17 also and my mother is a nurse… she still rolls her eyes about spending money but its because you buy a weeks worth of food and it would appear to be more than you would usually spend…when in reality its the same or less… They save 10$ a week because I dont drink soda and they spend less money on food because instead of trash like frozen pizzas and cheese its they buy Good foods that stay with you lol… I could easily down a 5$ box of cheese its if I wanted to :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey thanks everyone, yeah I have a job, ironically at a grocery store. Its just that we have a ton of people working there and not a lot of hours to give out. And the way gas is all of my paycheck is going into my gas tank. I’m going to be moving out soon for college anyways, and I was just kinda curious if anybody was going thought the same stuff.

How far away is work? Try walking there if its feasible. I used to work for a grocery store a few blocks from my house.

I’d leave 30 mins before my shift i saved maybe 2-3 gallons a week (lead foot). That should free up some bills a week for some chicken breasts. ( I also got buddy-buddy with the meat manager, he’d set aside some choice cuts that were near sell date and were priced very well = D )

On the shopping around note, definitely look around at your local ethnic markets. There is a Mexican market near me where i can get 30% fat ground beef for 89c a lb, 6-pack of chicken breasts for 3 pounds and other great deals. I usually hit the asian markets for produce as well.

I had the same problem at the start. Give it some time, when you start getting results and your parents see how healthy you’ve grown, not only will they be more open to helping you but chances are they’ll mimic you and improve their own diets. My mother did, you should see how good she’s eating now, she even takes fish oil
