Eating While Injured

Hey folks,

I just dislocated and fractured part of my shoulder and was wondering if you guys had any tips on eating while injured. I found this article Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION and will be following the recommendations. But it doesn’t hurt to see what people have to say. Also, I ordered some Curcumin 500 to see if it’ll help.

thanks for any advice

I know that you’ll probably hear from a lot of people to cut back on cals when injured, but I always make sure I eat a little more in an effort to not lose any more lbm than is absolutely unavoidable. Yes you will smooth out a bit, but you can worry about that later on, and you’ll be happy that you didn’t lose all of your muscle. The curcumin is probably a good idea, and you might wanna throw in some creatine which should help as well (my brother loaded up just before he had to have his arm in a cast for a while, and it seemed to make a difference).

I second this. You will probably want to cut back on carbs since you won’t really be exercising that much, but make sure to maintain somewhere close to the same caloric intake. Just be careful to keep it clean, eat healthy to recover.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I was thinking I’d probably need to lower carbs.

When i got my A/C joint injured (ligments completely destroyed) i made the MISTAKE of trying to use my recovery time (after the surgery) “cutting”. My recovery took a lot longer, my inmune function was no good, etc…

By my experience i can advice you that you should try to eat enough (and enough protein), so you can fully recover. You’ll have plenty of time after to worry about looking good naked etc. But health is first.

I have to say the thought did cross my mind. Thanks for pointing that out.

Keep in mind your body needs a little more calories to repair an injury, than compared to just sitting around healthy + not working out.

Keep protein and good fats high to preserve muscle mass. Also you want to make sure you have enough calories to repair the injury. I think the best thing to do would be to keep calories up, but try to consume as much clean food as possible rather than junk, to minimize fat gain.

Good luck on your recovery.

I’m glad you made this thread. I got the results back from my MRI 2 weeks ago and my labrum is completely torn and another there’s issue the ortho won’t know about till he gets in there. I still work my upper body as much as I can w/o causing further damage. I’m still trying to figure out the best possible time to have my surgery.

I have class and need to schedule my classes next quarter accordingly. This is the first injury I’ve had in my life and I’m going to make sure my body is strong as I can possibly get it before going under the knife.

Please keep me posted how your training goes and how your diet is working for you. We can help each other out getting through this time period. I know how depressing it is. Had it been a knee injury, my whole world would’ve shattered.

Best of luck recovering. W/ regards to training i’m taking at least a week off since I can’t really move my upper body without pain yet.

How’d you get hurt?
