Yeah, for shits and giggles you can just google caffeine+post workout and you get a bunch of studies naming BENEFITS to caffeine post workout. Of course the dose is usually pretty high (5-6 cups of coffee worth of caffeine) but still there seem to be benefits.

While we are on the soda topic, was wonderin what everyone’s take on diet soda is. Drinking water with every meal gets a bit boring and I need something with flavor. Anyone got any advice on healthy flavored drinks? Ice Tea, diet soda? What do yall drink?

Drinking a coke after your work out is pointless. The best thing to do is when you finish have your shake, and when you get home eat a meal (all within your 30min anabolic window). Like Bicep_craze said, have some oatmeal, its perfect for after your workout.[/quote]

Oatmeal is /not/ perfect as a post workout carb source. It is not optimal because it has little effect on insulin (which is part of why it’s considered effective). This is the same for fruit
Post workout you want an insulin spike, so coke isn’t the worst choice, but I would be inclined just to add a fast acting carb to some protein and drink that

Best Post.

If my choices are “Coke” or nothing, I’m drinking the damned coke.

Oatmeal? Wow.

Interesting. What I was referring to is the effect a stimulant would have on the CNS. The CNS is already excited after a training session and would want to recover at least for some time (let’s say a couple of hours). During that window, I would want to rest - get a meal in me, maybe relax a little, instead of getting excited again. I doubt many of you take a fat burner right after work out, even if the timing coincides. I will try to look up these studies. Have any of them compared actual results as far as lean body mass gain in an individual or just refer to quicker assimilation of glucose?

I train right before work. The last thing some of us need is to relax to that degree right after training.

Think outside the box.

Ok, but isnt protein more important than calories? Wouldnt the one with more protein benefit u more (muscle growth wise) than less protein and more calories?

No, not if you aren’t getting enough calories in with the skim milk.

I drink 2%, but that’s because I have an insatiable appetite and have no trouble putting down 4-5000 calories per day if tht’s what I’m going for. For people who have trouble putting down alot of food, they should get their calories in however they can.

You need a steady supply of protein AND a caloric surplus to grow.

Why not just drink more to compensate for the reduction in protein?

Calories are the most important aspect when it comes to gaining lean body mass. It doesn’t matter how much protein you are eating if you aren’t eating enough calories overall to grow.

Isn’t there a beginner’s section?

exactly

I drink a 1 L of yogurt. 35g protein , 150g carbohydrates and 20g fats. Almost 1000kcal and when i get home an hour later i eat some chicken breast with potatoes, bread and green salad.

Yogurt is such a great recovery drink in my humble opinion.

Even in ketosis ( The state where your body burns food proteins for energy) your body uses glucose for energy. The difference is your body must first convert the protein to glycogen then to glucose. A much longer and calorie wasting process then ingesting some sugar.

On top of that your trying to rebuild muscle, which requires a whole varias body systems, processes and hormones which perform OPTIMALLY with fat, glucose and proteins available. Guess what has the best combinationof that? whole Milk, actually chocolate milk in a number of studies.

Regarding caffeine, the whole CNS thing is something I almost never heard or hear of outside of TNation. So the whole caffeine overloading and stimulating your CNS should be taken with a grain of salt. The ONE thing thats been confirmed is caffeine speeds up the metabolism, since that means your systems are working faster it’s possible your recovering faster. You’ll find many people who workout and take a lot of caffeine do seem to be able to workout longer harder and more often then those that don’t.

Hey some people want to live their life at 100mph, why knock it?

I train right before work as well. Does that mean that you drink coffee or take a fat burner to actively excite your CNS. or just means that you do not take a nap? I have a meal and then get ready. I think people took my posts too literally. And also, I think, this side of the argument could be closed.

This is like the 3rd or 4th time I’ve talked about this and I’m trying to find out what dumbass in a magazine or online article wrote it…that way I can find them and kill them so they don’t spread any more bad advice…it seems to be like the plague spreading from person to person these days.

no offense OP if I had heard this a while back I’d be curious too…I’ve just had a lot of discussions on this topic already lol

DG

I think it came from it being reported that Cutler’s PWO meal for a while was ice cream and soda

lol and they forgot to add that he’s probably taking 10+iu insulin with that…then 20mins later a steak or something lol

*disclaimer…if you don’t know how to use insulin DONT!

DG

naaahhh he’s natural

Yeah Jay Cutler’s natural, that’s the funniest thing I have heard this year. And so is Ronnie Coleman, and all those IFBB guys. It must be just a coincendence that they never test for those shows. LOL
