Drinker with a Gym Problem

i work with several tiny asian women. i’ve threatened to start squatting them.
Ha! Awesome.

consequently this is why weight lifters shouldn’t drink - before your into your third glass, everything’s looking like something you can squat.

I hear you on the hips. I got something wrong with my hip flexors. When I bring my thighs back towards my torso it feels like something’s jammed up in the crease of my groin. It’s hard to describe. It doesn’t hurt, as such - just feels kind of locked up. I’m going to make a point of stretching my groin as much as possible over the holidays.

Your dinner sounds fantastic.

i will cook a large beast of prime rib with scalloped potatoes (gruyere cheese, of course!) green beans, fresh cranberry relish and above average salad (butter lettuce, blue cheese, fuji apples, bosc pears, candied walnuts, dried cranberries and a splash of vinagrette)

enjoy the holiday everyone! (whichever one you may or may not celebrate…have a good one)
Our menus are pretty darn similar, as is our love for the gruyere cheese. Which, BTW, is my desert island food (my answer to the question, “what food would you bring if marooned on a desert island?”) Hope your holiday features some well-deserved time off!

Mascherano-or perhaps drinkers shouldn’t weight lift?? haaa!

Cal-yeah, my hips are tight as hell. i can do all kinds of ‘weird’ moves (sitting, standing, twist) to feel torquing of my hip flexors. i suck at making a serious effort to stretch, so i’m to blame i’m sure. yes, dinner should be freakin’ delish!

Kimba- i noticed that too. hmmm-what is my desert island food…i might have to get back to you on that…too many foods i LOVE!

i’m going to start braising my short ribs and then cook them down with onions, garlic, carrots and celery and herbs to make my au jus for the prime rib. i need to tidy the house a bit. (cocktail this evening, yes) then i will sleep in a tad, cook, drink vino and relax. back to work sat but that’s ok…

wow-spider…you made me think of what i refer to as “kryptonite”

ruffles with french onion dip (real sour cream+packet of onion mix) MMMMMMMMMMMM. i swear i am powerless to it.

if i had to take one food to survive on, it would be eggs. i love love love them (scrambled or hard-boiled only!) and eat them almost every single day for breakfast.

Have you ever had eggs benedict? Mmmmmm…

i hate yolks Bobbi…

grosssssssssss!

but the misses loves them so i’ve seen them many a times…

I made this yesterday for the big fam xmas – luckily I bought a second container of real sour cream as backup, and for sure I needed to mix up the second Lipton onion soup packet – thank goodness they come in packets of two. Just don’t make the mistake of reading the damn ingredient list.

That is an excellent choice. I could eat eggs every day too.

oh man ruffles with french onion dip is a major weakness of mine too. om nom nom.

and i feel ya on the tight hip flexors. i really need to work on that this year.

the food in here is making me drool. hope ya had a nice time gorging on it!

long time no see, deja! welcome back…

OMFUCKINGGOD! the scalloped potatoes were off the hook. i’ve never made them so i looked over several recipies to make up my own creation. (saute shallots, fresh thyme, garlic, heavy cream, gruyere and some asiago, white pepper, couple dashes nutmeg and dash of season salt) poured sauce on each layer of potatoes then topped them with some panko crumbs and a lil more cheese…wow…i had like 3 servings!

the prime rib was cooked to perfection, med rare throughout! it was a 5 bone so the ends were perfect medium. i have an aweseome set of friends (a co-worker and his wife-the ones that gave me surprise bday party) they snuck an outside patio fireplace thing into our backyard on xmas eve, didn’t see it til yesterday…awesome! so, that prompted me into opening one of my 3 coveted Shafer Hillside Selects.

wine, in order of drinking:
'04 Clos du Val Cab Sauvignon
'05 Pine Ridge Stag’s Leap District Cab Sauv
'03 Shafer Hillside Select Cab Sauv
'04 St Supery Dollarhide Ranch Cab Sauv

Hi Talenaah,

I just found your log and am catching up, looks like some great work so far.

For all the people mentioning jacked up hips, I hope none of you are putting your feet under some kind of pad if/when you do crunches or sit-ups. If you are, stop it, and your hips will thank you.

Talenaah, for wine drinking, I am liking Crema from Sonoma County, the red is insane smooth, like silk, and the white ain’t bad either. PS sorry for the ugly run on sentence.

Yes please! Those potatoes sound incredible. I probably would’ve taken the entire dish to some upstairs closet and gobbled up the whole thing like some feral animal. Seriously.

thanks for stopping in Maximus. if i were to do crunches, i will keep that in mind. my ab work is few and far between atm. La Crema, yes, consistent Pinot & Chard they do produce. i’m not a huge fan of either but appreciate them for different reasons. i am, however, a HUGE fan of the noble grapes.

Mascherano, i forgot to mention after i sliced the taters, i par-boiled them in milk & vegetable stock with sage, thyme and S&P. they picked up so much flavor from that, they would have been impossible to NOT be delicious once they were assembled with the remaining sauce/cheese.

hey folks, in case you wondered, i do still plan on training. i hope the gym is relatively quiet so i can go kill me some legs today!

Nice! I forgot about this exercise. They are really fun and one of the few things I can feel in my mid-glutes.

You sound as if you really enjoy your training. OFP style.

You are not kidding about your wine collecting!
Nice!

hi magzie, thanks for stopping in. very interesting avi-why does it seem familiar to me? i’ve been on the OFP due to work and not having any set goals the last 2 months. i better get reading 5/3/1 this week.

hi skyel!! happy new year to you. i feel very fortunate to live so close to those wineries. it took about 1.5 years to get on the Shafer mailing list. so now i can visit and taste no charge. i’m already searching online to replace that Hillside. i want to age them 10-12 yrs, so the best bet would be to buy 2 each release and drink one at 6-7 yrs and the other at 12+. but at $200+ a bottle, that is not so easy to do.

if only i had known about enology and viticulture when i was at UCD. dumb-dumb i was, microbiology instead…sheesh. back in '95 my chemistry lab partner said she was an enology major and i was like, “what?”

legs today-thanks Cbear for the zaaap, it must have helped me because i felt very good throughout and was thrilled to be in there.

gym already filling with the newbs…arrrghh! at least they only use machines.

squats:
12 x bar, 4 x8 @95, 2 x 8 @115, did 5 @135 (completely lame .5 squats) just so i could remember what 135 was like. depth getting very good at 95.
10 atg squats + OH press w/ bar.
10 OH front squats w/ bar (woah, got wobbly at 5, focused and knocked em out)

rack deads: 3 x 5 @155 (guy yapping at me forced me out a lil quicker than i would’ve liked)i think my form is actually great on these, so it’s time to start adding weight. and at least i could still see some tri’s when i was pulling. no doubt i will be called out for video now.

RDL 3 x 12 @ 80 BB (2 sets heels elevated, got very good ROM on all these, mah ass will thank me tomorrow)

did a couple sets of bulgarian splits and 10 sumo squats w/ 35 DB (mostly to stretch)

leg “push downs” 2 x 12 each leg 85lbs. (magzie, i’m glad someone else has done these)

couple sets of hypers, a few more bulgarian splits, single DLs, stretched decently, foam rolled at gym.

will stretch more this evening. with the plentiful food i’ve been eating, i should prolly do some ‘cardio’ this eve, but i dunno…

More video never hurt anyone.

Is an overhead front squat like an overhead squat or different?

more video…yesh, yesh…i know the drill. um, i think i was being a 'tard when i stated front for the overhead. i meant atg front squats with bar, + OH press at the top of the squat. ssorreh…
