Dreaded Assistance Question

What assistance (if any) should be done with beyond 5/3/1?

Shaun

There might be a direct answer to this coming from Jim but honestly add assistance exercises that help make your weak points stronger.

Yeah, I was just going to set it up the same way as 5/3/1 but afterwards I was a wreck. I am lifting two day’s a week… Squat and Bench, Dead and Press. I done a set of chins between every set of bench press… which added up to about 11 sets including warm ups and joker sets, that felt like enough assistance for one day. I just got a feeling that assistance work was not suppose to be part of this program.

Either way I don’t give a shit about assistance, just wanted to know if Jim didn’t mention any assistance templates for beyond 5/3/1 because he doesn’t think it should be done

Beyond 5/3/1 is not a specific program. It just lists a whole lot of options to help you set up your own program and helps you get new ideas towards your training. Jim mentions that first set last and joker sets should be a part of the original program, but this does not mean that you have to do it everytime you train. If you feel good a specific day, keep adding weight after your last set in 10% steps. This is the jokers.

For more volume, add first set last. If you rather want to do close grip bench press after your military, do that, but I do think it will be overkill to do military 5/3/1, jokers, first set last and then close grip bench press on the same day. This is up to you though. And that is why I love 5/3/1, it gives me the option to choose for myself how i hard want to train that day depending on how i feel.

How is it not a specific program? I done it yesterday…

Beyond 5/3/1, Option 1

Done.

No 5/3/1 involved.

Just want to know if It is wise to pound away at 5x10 bullshit afterwards, or go home.

I use the beyond and don’t really do assistance besides some lat work and light lower back and ab work, but I train almost every day. If you’re consolidating to just two days a week you can probably afford to do a little more, but if you’re getting stronger without it then why waste your time? Toss in some rows, maybe some back extensions and/or ghrs, and some shoulder prehab if you need it.

Hey,

Thanks man, thats what I was looking for. It is pretty taxing, some back raises and chins is about all I could manage anyway.

Thanks dude
