I live in the dorms here at college. I’m your typical skinny white guy at 5’11" and 155lbs. Problem lies in the fact that they have already tried to kick me out of the dorms for trying to boil water in my room with a hot plate. Anything but a microwave is a nono. This certainly cuts out my ability to cook meat.
This is done because you must buy a meal plan if you live in the dorms. The school makes more money but I’m left without anything but general worthless junkfood my contemporaries eat. e.g. pizza and lots of it.
So I find myself getting my protein from GROW! and tons of tuna sandwiches. So my question is: what the hell do I eat to get my 3000 calories and 150 grams of protein if I can’t cook anything? I can only eat so much tuna and chili.
Look around and you will find many things you can use. If you have a little refrigerator in your room, tyson makes these beef pot roast things that can be kept in your fridge and it only takes 3 minutes to heat them up. Best thing about them is that it has 19g of protein per serving plus 2.5g of fat, and no carbs. Tyson also makes chicken strips in a bag that you can eat cold or heat up in the microwave, also tasty. I don’t work for tyson, btw. lol But also peanuts, beef jerky, canned beans w/uncle ben’s rice. Take a trip to different grocery stores and just look around at everything. You will find some stuff. Carb Countdown is also very good (the milk replacement drink).
you can do scrambled eggs in a microwave. and cottage cheese can be your new best friend! can you not buy meat thats already been cooked? or is student lack-of-money a factor?
School cafeterias usually have a salad bar. Go crazy on that. A lot of salad bars have cottage cheese, hardboiled eggs, plus you are getting tons of fresh vegetables.
Eat your 3 meals at the cafeteria, and your other 3 meals can be Grow, tuna, cheese, nuts, whatever.
Maybe I misunderstood and you aren’t eating ANY meals at the cafeteria? Do you only get pizza every day, and nothing else? That’s kind of hard to believe.
I recommend that you put most of your effort into college while you are there. You will have the rest of your life to concentrate on weight training. However, you only have one chance to get the most out of college. Make your studies your priority.
Lumpy, on the training/nutrition side? The only thing you write or respond to is how piss off a republican ;-). You can cook Salmon in the microwave. I, think you can make scrambled eggs in there also. Not, exactly sure how though. Blender should be okay also in the Dorm rooms to so invest in a few jars of protien and MPR’s.
Give this article a look. “School Day Part II” It is by JB’s Brother. All about nutrition while at college.
I have been through college and am in a Grad program right now but cant really help with the dorm situation. I never had to stay in one. You might be able to use one of those George Foreman type grills without them knowing. Just an idea.
I was not aware that you can cook eggs in the microwave. What else can I cook in the microwave? Can I brown hamburger and chicken in there? I have a fridge, but my freezer doesn’t work.
As far as the cafeteria, no it’s not JUST pizza. But essentially it’s basic junk food like pizza. There’s a sandwich place, but they won’t give you more than a 4" sub. That’s about a joke if you can imagine what that looks like. Granted the vegetarians cried enough to get their stuff, but meat eaters are pretty much FUBAR.
As far as boiling water with a hot plate. We recently had a fire alarm so they went through all the rooms and noticed I had a hot plate. They pinned the alarm on me and tried to get me to pay for the fire department showing up. I basically told them to kiss off. The dorms suck. Simple as that. I’ll be go to hell if I’m here next semester.
Thanks for the replies. Money is something of an issue as I’m living off my money saved in the Corps and my G.I. Bill. I decided it was time to put on the weight after a rough rookie season of rugby. I’m only 155, at least 20 lbs under the next lightest guy. You should have seen me try to bring down a 230lb beast. Just bounced off him like a rag doll. Need the weight.
I can relate to your culinary conundrum and may have a few helpful ideas. A lot of people suggested hitting up a local grocery store but if you’re anything like me it infuriates you to be paying for a meal plan you’re not using. I usually grab a pound or two of turkey a week so I have someting to eat late at night. As far as the dining hall goes at my place I pretty much stick to grilled chicken (so small it’s laughable but I cram two pieces into the bun), tuna and turkey. The salad bar point was right on target I think because ours has eggs and cottage cheese that you can take advantage of. Also, get friendly with the employees and they’ll usually be able to hook you up a bit with some other choices not offered to students. It’s really hard to eat clean but just find whatever staple items you can and gullet them as frequently as possible–and then move off campus.
Bring the bag and tupperware with you into the dining hall. I’m assuming it’s an “all you can eat” type deal.
What I used to do is stock up on all the meats: deli turkey, chicken, fish, etc… Put all that in one of the tupperware containers.
Fill another with raw veggies.
Fill another with whole wheat bagels, bread or cereals.
Also sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, pasta will all fit nicely in the tupperware.
You can stock this all in the fridge and it should last a couple of days. Just keep stocking up and don’t transfer the food in the middle of the dining hall. You need to be discreet but if you really want to grow, you have a great way to get a ton of food and make the most of your food plan.
find a friend with an apt or house, or give someone 10 bucks to let you cook for the week hehe. Make food for the week 12-20 chix breasts, 12 cups rice and bag it and put it in the fridge thats what i did…i used about 3 shakes a day…2 food meals and 2 dining hall meals. stealing from the dinding hall works wonders haha. Loaf a bread and a few sandwiches a day hehe. Har boiled eggs…Cup O noodles and some grow!..um hot pockets in moderation, burritos, and grow, ya know make it interesting. Oatmeal in micro, supposedly their are plates you can buy so you can cook meat in a micro and not kill it…saw it on tv once hehe.
if you can smuggle food out of the dining hall do that. Otherwise anything that can be eaten out of the fridge: cold meats, cottage cheese, cheese, fruits, carrots. And this little meal things you can cook in the microwave, some of them have to be good. Oh, and I feel your pain on the rugby side, was only 170 last season and it was rough; but am 183 now and still climbing!!
You can cook anything in a microwave. The question is whether or not you would want to eat it afterwards.
Ground beef/turkey is about the only thing that would be edible after getting nuked. Steaks, chicken breasts, sefood etc, will turn to rubber. Ground beef/turkey, a little taco seasoning, some canned black beans, cheese, salsa, gaucamole, tortillas and you can make some decent burritos.
Eggs can be nuked, but they can make a mess, so make sure you cover them very well. Do not try to nuke an egg in the shell. They will explode, which is kinda cool but makes a hell of a mess.
funkmasterflex had the best idea. find one of the guys on your team with an apt. and make a deal with him to let u cook there once a week or soemthing.
