Could someone please quantify how important it is when training twice a day that your 2nd training session be 4-6 hours apart as per Charles Poliquin recommendation. I can only get to the gym for the same body part 10 hours later due to work constraints.Charles claims its CRUCIAL to train the same body part 4-6 hours later. Can Don Alessi who wrote the shoulder specialisation workout explain if this time frame is crucial or will you still see 80% of the results or x%? Just curious because if it is significantly better to train the same body part 4-6 hours later I’ll do it.
Thanks TOPKAT
I don’t think Poliquin said it was crucial for hypertrophy directly as such. In that 4-6 hour window you will be neurally “prepped” for a workout. Therefore if you go in before 4 hours you will be too tired from the last workout and if you go in after the 6 hours you will lose the upped neural effect. Now you won’t be able to lift as much weight…accoring to Poliquin. So if your not lifting as much weight chances are you won’t get the same effect. Personally I don’t think you will be lifting that much more due to neural effect but I could be wrong. The main deal with twice a day training is two recovery feedings and extreme muscle damage. Give both a try…10 and 4-6 hours. You are doing them in 2 week blocks followed by a week of once a day training right? Let me know how you do as I plan to do twice a day training in about 12 weeks or so. Thanks. ![]()
Interesting question. I’d also like to see Alessi’s reply … but nkeago’s gave some good common-sense.
I would read the following studie in determining if what Poliquin says is correct;Bentley DJ, Smith PA, Davie AJ, Zhou S.Muscle activation of the knee extensors following high intensity endurance exercise in cyclists.Hope this helps.
I seem to remeber what you are talking about. When Polquin was talking about going within that 4-6hrs period it was when both workouts preformed were targeting the same body parts. He was talking about say doing heavy chest in morn at 4-6 reps per set and then come back 4-6 hrs later and do another chest workout but this one may have all the same exercises but reps may be 12-15 per set.
If you are do two different workouts per day I don’t think it will matter if they are 10 hrs apart, but I could be totally wrong on this part.
thanks guys great help!
