Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

We are lucky to have a lot of Italian delis around here so fresh muffaletta bread is always available!

I’m taking intro to ethics. So this was egosim, contractarianism, deontology (Kant), utilitarianism (mainly mills), and virtue ethics (mainly Aristotle) with some counterarguments for them all

I’ve taken this profs intro class so I’ve done basically 50% of this ethics class before lol

Exactly! It’s funny because I enjoy cooking more than eating for the most part. So the experience of making it versus the outcome of having food. Hey! That circles back to Nozick’s “Experience machine” we talked about in regards to utilitarianism in Ethics!

Thanks!

No lifting today

Apparently I hurt my foot in some way. It started to be painful yesterday after noon but now walking and standing on it causes pain. It’s all lateral side. Might be a tendon thing. If it’s not better tomorrow, I’ll be super careful lifting and do deep knee bends instead of flat foot squats

That sucks! I hope it heals super fast!

@throwawayfitness @QuadQueen Thanks! It’s better than it was this morning. I couldn’t walk for 5 minutes without it hurting pretty bad but I got through an evening dog walk pretty ok.

Movement:

Pullups: 2x10
Reverse hypers: 180x2x15
Diamond pushups: 2x15

Notes:

  • This was really to get the reverse hypers in. I’ve been wanting to do them and they don’t require me to stand so perfect!
  • @T3hPwnisher you were right. Reverse hypers are magic

BW Work:

5 rounds:
Deep knee bend: 35,20,35,20,41
Dip: 6,8,6 (cut after 3 rounds bc shoulder and was doing these on chairs)
Chins: 10,6,10,6,10
Pushup: 30,20,30,20,51
HLR: 15,10,15,10,20
OH claps: 20x5

Notes:

  • Guess percentages of AMRAPs on BW stuff is hard lol
  • I did hit a set up 14 chins right after rolling out of bed this morning. Wasn’t a max. Probably had 3-4 more left in the tank
  • Foot felt fine. Just didn’t want to put more than BW on it
  • Weirdly enough I notice when BW work becomes more prominent in my lifting, I always get leaner
  • Strangely enough I’ve found 9 days is the perfect timing for me for a cheat meal (not necessarily a carb up just a chance to eat something that’s not home cooked)
  • Birthday wings are made (2 days!). It’s funny when you are turning 21 and your mom turning old enough to be at retirement age on the same day

BW Work

5 rounds (max rest was 45 seconds):

  • 10 pullups
  • 20 pushups
  • 30 (15/15) jumping lunges

Notes:

  • Good little lung burner
  • Brought the door pullup bar to my moms since I had to get over here early. Good call
  • When I was young, I always like the “parable of the prodigal son”. Now re-reading it, I fully understand how the older son feels. Like me to dude. Not saying he’s right but it’s a pretty spot on description of how it feels when you have older siblings who went off the path and came back to not being a fuck around. It’s good they came back around but at the same time, I’ve been plugging away staying on the good productive path no matter what but I get no celebration. Kind of a selfish way to feel but it just sucks to have it from both parents. Oh well, still going to remain a productive human

Happy belated birthday! Also sorry about the old dog, enjoy your time with him and fill it with memories.

Yes, Happy Birthday! Sorry to hear about your dog. I still have not gotten over putting my German Shepherd to sleep two years ago. He was ornery, but he has been hard to replace.

@Koestrizer @Friedrich Thanks! The new goal is to do something new with him every week while he is still in good health and mobile.

Notes from yesterday:

  • Started 70’s powerlifter because I wanted to get back to reps and 531 BBB looked fun but this seems more like stuff that’s worked in the past for me (high volume wave loading)
  • Going off program percentages and estimating. RPE 6-7 is hard to estimate. 60% seems light so I’m keeping movement quality extremely high and rest very low (sub one minte) while I can
  • Rugby is on back burner now. Really going to aim for next week. I really wanted to get into it but last week was the foot after the hip healed. Now the dog news has thrown me off game because practice is Tues and Thursday which is after my long classes. Tues and Thurs are the day I want to make a park trip with my old dog because he’s inside all day. Will take some time to iron out but I want to max time with him while he’s still good to move

He is just chilling. No idea somethings wrong

We just talked to the vet. Amputation is clearly out of the picture, surgery to remove the bone is very expensive and not guaranteed to give him a lot of time, and radiation is out of the picture bc with the type he has only 50% of dogs live to see another year post treatment.

He’s turning 13 so he’s an old dog. Nothing is guaranteed to let him live another 3 years and even then something else will probably be an issue. Time to let this old man live his best days out

Time: 40mins

SSB squat: 200x2x10, 180x1x10
Wide squat: 110x10, 135x10
Front squat: 135x10, 135x10

Circuit:
RH leg extension: 180x3x15
Lunge: 45x3x15 (each leg)
GHD situp: 3x10

Notes:

  • I’m shocked to say my legs are pumped as hell
  • Wide squats are very weak for me as I’ve never done them and my hips a little jacked up. Just going to take time to build the pattern and not just slap weight on
  • Trying to stick to that RPE 6. It’s hard but I’m anchoring it to “can I feel it where I’m supposed to” and “I will have 5 sets of this shit in 2 weeks”. Might be undershooting but it’s still a shit ton more volume than I have been doing
  • @BrandonCrawford I got the shoulder on today! Been a crazy week but I’ll have finished pictures when it’s done in the oven
  • My bad @T3hPwnisher. Posted this in your log by mistake lol
  • @QuadQueen Do you have any ideas on how to taper off caffeine? I’ve knocked it back to 250-300mg from 400mg but I’m not sure how to get it lower than that

Keep taking it down slowly. If you’re doing coffee start doing half decaf, if energy drinks start cutting them with flavored or unflavored carbonated water. I’d aim to lose about 100-150 mg at a time and hold it at that amount until any withdrawal symptoms are completely gone.

What are your current caffeine sources and when during the day are you having them? Do you reach for them out of habit or because you’re tired? And lastly, what does your sleep look like?

Mostly just coffee and tea before noon (usually 2 coffees and 1 50mg caffeine tea). Energy drinks are regulated to weekends and the occasional “it’s going to be a long night” afternoon drink. No pre-work out at all because I hate that shit

Vast majority of the time tired and in the morning out of habit. I don’t “wake up” fully until I have a cup of coffee (probably more habit). After the first one it’s like I need a hot beverage to help me focus on school stuff

Usually 7-9 hours (typically waking up towards end of sleep cycle). My allergies have been going ape shit crazy lately so I wake up with my nose super dry (even with a saline solution like air under it). Chances are that’s killing the quality

I’ll grab some this weekend!

I had to quit caffeine leading up to a heart surgery two years ago. I have maybe one coffee every two weeks now. I have no advice since I went cold turkey and was medically motivated, but wanted to say that getting off caffeine has been transformative. Energy levels actually feel higher day to day, specifically in the morning.

Yeah that’d make me quit too lol. What was the surgery for if you don’t mind me asking?

I remember this from when I didn’t have caffeine! Trying to get back to it and break the dependency

Relatively minor procedure but I had an extra electrical pathway in my heart, which would cause arrhythmias. Basically my heart rate would get jacked up to 200bpm randomly every week or so and bouts becoming more frequent and longer. Had no symptoms till my early 20s but it was a birth defect and was there my whole life. They went through my leg up to the heart and cauterized the pathway shut. Pretty cool procedure, done with an Xbox like controller apparently lol
