Extreme sun burn is very common here, but there is debate as to whether that is due the hole in the ozone layer. But studies have shown that the hole which forms over Antarctica does not extend to Australia. Other studies have shown that there is some thinning of the ozone (University of Melbourne studies concluded it to be about 5% thinner).
The debate regarding diet and tolerance to sun would indeed be an interesting one. I have read a few articles regarding timing of eating food and some foods in particular that assist with skin repair and potentially sun tolerance. Most also mention fatty acids like Omega 3, although most of these do not refer specifically to meat there is nothing to say it is not effective.
Certainly most seem to agree that a good diet (I am not going to say what good looks like) can effect skin health both as a tolerance and restorative functions.
The other common school if thought for Australia is simply that the population that lives here are predominantly migrants (less than 4% of Australian population is indigenous), who come from colder climates and simply do not possess natural protection in our skin.
This deff plays a part. I think in Melbourne we have extremes of weather (we are known for having 4 season in one day) when the sun does come out people often just get too much or are not prepared for it. Whilst we donât have freezing winters, we do have a defined winter and it is colder and people spend less time outside (unless you are from the UK like me). Then as soon as we get a 30c day everyone spends the day at the beach and forgets to apply any sun screen. In the tropical parts of Australia where is pretty much always warm and sunny people seem better prepared or more sensible with their exposure time.
would that not suggest given the poor diet of most people these days which tend to be high in both saturated fats and cholesterol that we should all not be getting sun burnt ?
I find it tends to be high in POLYunsaturated fats, due to seed oils being cheap and present in MANY foods. And with how much we demonize cholesterol, how many folks are actually consuming it? People balk at the idea of eating 3 eggs but will eat an entire bag of Fritos.
We are taking in SO many Omega 6s these days, avoiding beef, eating impossible burgers (hah!), etc
You could be right, I was thinking that highly processed food like cakes, biscuits and pastries, as well as processed meat, and fried and takeaway foods, tend to be high in saturated and trans fats. Peoples diets seem to be very meat driven down here in Aus but most people eat out or takeout multiple times a week. Eggs is deff something that people donât eat and that does seem to come from a derived misunderstanding of their effects on cholesterol.
This is definitely the line of thinking that people who make junk food would like us to think. Looking deeper into them is pretty fascinating. In our pursuit to âclean upâ, we stopped using butter and eggs and starting using margarine and oil. Real saturated fats arenât cheap, whereas processed seed oils are, especially in the states where we subsidize crops and tax dairy/cattle farmers. And then we can turn around and market twinkies as âheart healthyâ because theyâre low in saturated fats! Haha.
When we were a butter, beef, bacon and eggs eating society, we didnât see near the sickness we see today. As we got âsmarter and healthierâ, we started dying much harder.
Really interesting convo Pwn. Sorry @freshyfresh for the side track in your log. I wonder if the âclean upâ as you put it is different based on country to country and local vs national producers. I guess it doesnât really matter, in most cases cheaper ingredients will likely be used and that leads to the product being just rubbish. Just another good reason to just eat real food.
You did an incredible job with all of that dude! Definitely worth âdeviatingâ from Apex predator to test it all. And really cool youâve been in comms with Jamie and Jon like that.

Thought I was going to get my truck back today. Did not so I hit some various BW circuits around the house while doing yard work. Getting truck back tomorrow no matter what. Just got everything âfixedâ and had new issues pop up that werenât there before. Given the history with that mechanic shop, itâs shitty work and this is the last trip there.
I hate to be a dick to the workers but the current issues that popped up would be related to work they did last summer. Also my truck completely died Saturday while driving. It wasnât doing that before I took it to them. It might be a coincidence but I doubt it
Making tonight my rampage night because Iâm going to an all you can eat sushi place
