got it!
When this happens, push the assistance until it breaks.
Thanks! I will do this next time I run 5/3/1.
I was just looking through your log and saw you had power stairs in a comp. I know you had trouble loading it but do you have any tips on doing them while being vertically challenged for this sport? I know you and I are similar heights but if you know anyone else around our height thatād be awesome too.
Iām pretty much having to do a shrug/clean to clear the platform and then load. Some guys were telling me to zercher it but the weight is 225lbs, the stairs are close which freak me out, and I can move decently fast with this less effective technique. I donāt think it would be wise to completely switch styles being fairly close to comp. But I am curious to hear your thoughts if you have minute!
Appreciate it man. Iāve done power stairs twice, and the first time I had no issue, but the second time they loaded the implement with 45lb plates, and THATāS where I struggled. Prior to that, I employed a swing to get the implement up, but with the wide diameter, I wasnāt able to get into a decent swing position. I ALSO had to deal with the fact that I legit nearly blacked out when I picked up the damn thing, haha.
So donāt do thatā¦
This isnāt a great angle, but Vytautas Lalas (in orange) is 5ā9-5ā10, and you can see his technique. Their power stairs are more what I prefer
Iām pretty sure thatās what we are using. I have homefield advantage here since my gym is putting on the comp. I see he using kind of like an upright row/lean back and rock it on the platform style. I will play with that Saturday. That will probably work really we if the owner puts something to cover the lip of the horse stall mat on the wooden platform but we will see. Hopefully he does because Iāve gotten the plates caught between the mat and wood which is no fun!
Thanks for all the advice!
Youāve had a rough run recently. My condolences man, Iām sorry to hear it.
Maybe Iām wrong, but I firmly believe that training only works if you believe itās working. Iām not saying to program hop all the time, but if mentally you donāt think what you are doing is going to make you better, then I doubt your body is going to surprise you.
Yeah. Tell this voice to stfu. You have a great path ahead, and youāve shown in this log a level of dedication and work ethic beyond the average. Intrusive thoughts are normal, but you donāt need me to tell you what the right path here is. Keep grinding my man, bright things will come of it.
We seriously need to set up some sort of t-nation fund where we can pay you for all the pro bono work you do for literally everyone around here.
You are a godsend.
(Yes Iām replying to your log a lot of time in a row. Iām replying as I read posts, sue me lol).
I totally agree with you on 531, and also feel like this is 100% because we arenāt doing 531 right lol. I think if you really understand it well and pair different programs in a way that gives you a tough peak combined with some easier times (Iāve actually following the anchor leader thing), then 531 hits all the bases. That being said, as the way most of us run it, I do think it gets a little stale after a few months.
I appreciate it
I really appreciate this. I never stop just sometimes have to slow down. I will say though having comically shitty professors do not help with this. I love learning but the formal education is straining when you have a turd in a punch bowl (I happen to get a lot of them)
I was just thinking about that after she offered the phone call!
I 100% agree with you on this. The leader and anchor system makes a lot of sense because it is renamed periodization. I just find it really weird that I get a set of 10 on an AMRAP set but I could press it for a 4x8 and get more volume (I noticed this with my OHP recently. Granted it was a couple months apart but still). It might be a skill issue in the sense of you havenāt unlocked the privilege of 1 set. I bought a mitch hooper program to run next earlier today because it was a strongman offseason and it came with a small education PDF. He basically said āHigh volume works and so does high intensity but neither work forever so you have to switch it upā. I can see that with 5/3/1 templates BUT sometimes changing it up is a lot more fun. Hell a lot of Brian Alsurheās programs are 5/3/1 with giant sets and assistance work.
You are too sweet. I love helping when and where I can! I mean, would a lifetime supply of Metabolic Drive be nice? Sure, but for real though, I just really like being useful - so, thank you for letting me hang around and put in my two and a half cents. Yāall are awesome!
Overall update:
I learned a very valuable lesson today. I put my pride to the side to be able to look pass all my anger and desire to do stuff my way. I already had to drop physics this semester because it is a really hard class and it has a high drop rate. With all the other background stuff going on, I really only focused on classes I found interesting so my chemistry fell behind. Once again, since it is a gen ed class that is known for being hard and having a high drop rate, I fell behind. Primarily because of the 20 point leeway system does not work how the prof described it so I couldnāt dig myself out the hole.
After a very emotional and anger filled phone call with my mom about life and school, I contacted a counselor about dropping chemistry to take a W instead of a D. I not only learned I can drop the course but I could also appeal the Wās given the circumstances. This is such a relief and honestly feels like Iāve been given a second chance. Iām going to finish out the semester by excelling in English, Econ, and physiology while making up for lost time over the summer. Still more healing to do but this helps to not feel like giving up entirely.
Fantastic pivot dude! And itās great to hear that your school is willing to be so human over this experience. Youāve been putting in a lot with all youāve been going through.
Thanks I appreciate this! Iām living the āItās not over until I stopā mindset now!
Didnāt get around to lifting today so I made my night time stretching longer and I hit a mobility PR! Thereās really no great way to get a picture of it so hereās my best
I think being able to do a full pancake would be super cool. Also Iāve noticed that the pancakes are a great for prevent pain in my hips.
I had my very informative phone call with @QuadQueen yesterday. I learned a lot from it and will definitely be taking a nutrition class to see if I like it. Thanks again!
Lastly, I have a buddy who is going to do all comp events with me on Saturday and I have an old BJJ buddy coming to lift and check out the gym! Going to be fun!
I think Iām going to try out one of Mitch hoppers programs. I know some of them are 5 days and I really like the 5 days of real lifts. When I rise to the challenge, something like that can improve so much for me personally
Life notes:
- still a lot to improve on from all the stuff going on but I had a lot of catharsis and unpacking last night with my best friend about it all
- because I was feeling extremely outgoing with some liquid confidence, I did a lot of talking to old friends, planning stuff with new friends, and getting closer to close friends. Itās weird just because I am not an outgoing person BUT it felt amazing to do all that. I think I convinced myself Iām not an outgoing person but deep down I am. Itās always cool to realize something you always tell yourself is just not true.
- itās always the small things in friendships Iām finding. For example, I have a new friend I made from the strongman gym and he called me after he lifted today. We also randomly text each other but I am so appreciative of that. I remember have Tate saying something like āPeople who grunted together grow togetherā and thereās truth into that.
- Even though I have more time in my schedule, Iām going to make myself get up earlier still. Itās a great habit and always improves my day. Itās even better when I lift super early too but that will be decided later
- Finally, there are few self improvement books I really like and I found one called āMan Upā by Bedros Keuilian. The reason why I like it so much is because it has really good exercises at the end of every chapter. Iāve been having the PDF since it is free but I decided to get the hard copy because I find it so helpful
Youāre so welcome! I loved talking with you and as you now know, just talking in general. Lol.
I know that whatever career path you choose, youāre going to completely rock it - just find what you like doing and can see yourself not being miserable doing for the next 30-40 years.
Strongman Saturday was fun until I failed with the 225 log. 205 went up no issue. Iām lucky to be alive to be honest. Will see how everything pans out. I can do body weight squats but my fucking leg hurts!
Love the punch into the air, took it like a champ lol
So Iām thinking the come back plan is going to be running Alexander bromleys kong program. Depending on how the leg is in a week, Iāll see about the comp but the lighter bodybuilding style stuff while probably be the smart move.
Glad that log didnāt take you out man, 225 will go up next time.
Brutal, but badass. Glad youāre ok dude!
