Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid


Christmas food prep has started. Black magic bars on the right and the rest is brisket/burnt ends. Spent the better part of an hour prepping the meat listening to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Something about that music while butchering up meat feels like some criminal activities. More meat pics to come

Kinda fucked this brisket up. Bark didn’t get set like I wanted it to and didn’t have butchers paper to wrap it in. It’s interesting how much some of the smoking process is just up to luck. My controllables don’t change much but every few briskets just don’t get a great bark.

Missed my lifting session to because of dishes and babysitting the brisket since it’s the leaner part. Will get it done tomorrow morning will the burnt ends are starting. I don’t like having to interrupt my sessions to go check on something. Would rather just get the sessions done in it’s entirety undisturbed

Tried a piece of the brisket. Flavor is amazing. Lessons learned though just have to cook it a little hotter next time

Started the deck of cards and the stopped. Been up since 2AM since my dog needed to go piss outside. Didn’t go back to sleep which usually leads me to being slightly irritable throughout the day. This shine through during the workout. Lots of random ā€œI fucking suck at thisā€, ā€œWhats the point of lifting these bitch weightsā€, and ā€œThis shit is fucking dumbā€. Will get in a different conditioning session later so that way I don’t have a time to beat and can let myself have a win

I wish I had a stronger and bigger squat but I think I’m getting some mental fatigue from the SSB trying to throw my face into the floor. Also, I refuse to compromise on cutting range for weight so ATG is here to stay

Lastly I squeezed some sort of bump on my ear and it swelled up pretty bad. Feels like cauliflower ear and I’m pissed I never got it during wrestling season but somehow got it from a random bump

Notes:

  • Once again caught up on my squat numbers being so weak. It’s more aggravating they haven’t move in a while but I am lifting with better form, force, and sinking every rep. Still pisses me off the weight hasn’t gone up but whatever. Need to get a fucking life and not be attach to my squat numbers
  • I listen to Jim Wendler about the frequency of lifts not mattering but it’s fucking absurd to me I haven’t gotten stronger. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong

Burnt ends. I figured it out. This brisket was just too lean. Even the point was pretty dry. Just not enough marbling for a good smoke. Didnt tack up the sauce because of reheating tomorrow

I think the biggest thing to help my training is just to gain some weight. I’m thinking lactaid pills and whole milk

Man, I know I’ve been in this place. I think there is a little bit of imposter syndrome in most of us. Realizing that we all have our own limitations and rate of progress is super important. Comparing yourself only to the you of the past is the only comparison that should be made. Keep killing it and prosper.

I was looking at this last night and the most I’ve squatted with a 1x a week frequency was like SSB 245x5 but my squat has gotten up to like 315x1 and 235x20 10lbs heavier during my bulk last year while using a straight bar. So the strength might still be there.

Also I’m training events from strongman now and I don’t have bad knee pain from squatting so the tendons might have caught up. I also got rid of my good morning habit with the squat. There’s progression but I just don’t realize it because it’s not bigger numbers

It’s pretty minimal if I do and usually stems from tight hips and hamstrings. I’ve had people look at it and they just said ā€œDon’t worry about itā€

I think while I love the squat, I’m getting bigger and stronger with the weight I’m using. The SSB just cuts down the weight I can use but BASP rotates the main lifts so I’ll throw in Highbar squats instead of SSB 2x a cycle.

  • Got to get this in in the bedroom I grow up in. I remember all the morning workouts and stuff before school I would do with the dip and pull up bar in my room.
  • Burpees make a great way to warm up my hips
  • it’s interesting how different people are. I’m starting to think some are just going to be miserable all their life while others can grow out of it
  • I’m just going to throw this out there. My mom always hosts Christmas and I always cook the meat which takes a while but I always make sure to help clean and make sure her house isn’t gross. I think people with children should be doing this because of how kids are causing the mess but that’s a different story
  • now onto Christmas at my dads which shall be interesting to say the least

  • Pretty fun and good day. I honestly could not imagine not supersetting something. Saw people doing bodybuilding style training and just chilling on their phone. Just strange to me. Not trying to sound superior, just a non-appealing training style to me

Ya know, there’s a certain point where you just need to wait for your body to respond. I have absolutely hammered my legs and not seen my squat go up, then got some of the best squat gains on my life while running 15-20 miles a week. It doesn’t make sense. But if you’re consistent, the gains come…… eventually
