  • Front squat and SSB seem to be on the same with each other. Weird

8 DB squeeze press: 45lbs

Conditioning: 12-1 drop push up

Strongman Conditioning: Frame Carry 90sec rest
90x2, 225x2, 275x2, 315x1, 365x1, 405x1, 455x1

Notes:

  • Bench felt super strong even though it’s been a while since I’ve done a normal bench
  • Carries were fun. Opted for frame carry because it is less set up time than the farmers handles (finding plates and collars that fit)

Extra Work:

Cable Curl: 15lb: 2x15 (Controlled)
Incline Curl: 20lb: 2x10
Concentration Curl: 20lb: 2x10
Straight Bar Pushdown: 20lb: 13,12,12
OH Cable Extension: 10lb: 12,10,10
KB Curl: 20lb: 3x5

Notes:

  • Squeeze press didn’t do much for me yesterday. Normal DB bench might be a better solution
  • Pull overs and seal rows with a John Meadows Lat Activation to start each set has my lats actually sore so that’s super cool
  • Learning RPE on the main lifts. It’s nice to have that AMRAP because you can just do more if it’s too light. Seems especially helpful on squats because of all the submaximal volume I did with 5/3/1. Heavy and high rep squats are two different animals

8 Burpees

Endurance: AMRAP 10 mins (8 rounds complete)
100FT Overhead carry: 26lb Kettlebells
5 burpees

Strongman Conditioning: EMOM 10 Minutes
100FT carry- Husafel 133lbs

Notes:

  • Started strongman hoping to get a bigger press but instead got a bigger weighted pull up. I’ll take it
  • The carries were hell. Upper back is smoked and I could not do 170lbs (85%) for husafel carries. Hopefully I will one day, but today was not the day.
  • Z press with a swiss bar in the style of a pin press is my new favorite press movement. Will experimnet with standing pin press with the swiss bar Friday.
  • Felt pretty beat up from yesterday. First 2 reps for the top set were viper style but come to the third, I was feeling the fatigue in my back and hips.
  • Did some background studying of Kant and Hegel so now I can start my read of Either/Or by Kierkegaard

90lb RH: 20-15-15
60 Band pull aparts

Notes:

  • I feel adequately trained from the BASP sessions. I do not feel the need to do more conditioning and I do not want to
  • I feel massive and feel like I’ve been growing like a weed

These weighted pull-ups are seriously impressive, I feel good about my numbers then come here to remind myself of the work I need to do! Crushing it man

Thanks I appreciate it! External load always looks big when you are a lightweight! Learning to pull the slack out of the bar (like you do on deadlifts) helped my top end strength for weighted pull ups a lot

Rant/talking point:

I’m very happy and appreciative of the fact that whatever brain chemistry I have and life experience I went through allow to stay rational and levelheaded most of the time. I’m pretty lucky that when issues arise, for the most part, I can just logic my way through them. For example, about this time last year, I definitely had some form of depression (undiagnosed) based on my mood swings, random anger, and overall disinterest in life. I got fed up enough where I was just like ā€œI need to change shit because whatever I’m doing right now is making me miserableā€. I stopped eating a lot of processed food, reduced video game time, stopped smoking green everyday, and moved back to stoic principles. Fast forward to now I’m much happier, interested in life, and living. I don’t have a big circle and spend a lot of time with family but I’d rather that than living to please someone else.

Part of the reason I bring this up is because my good friend and roommate is going through a rough patch and I’m concerned about her. I’ve addressed some of my concerns with her but I think a lot of it boils down to her living away from her parents for the first time and her trying to find her place in life. I got her into the gym and eating healthy which helped some of her issues but it’s just an interesting thing to look at given my experience and how I felt this time last year.

It’s also weird for me to type this stuff out and think about thinking it. I feel like I have a lot of practical experience with stuff like this but the other part of my brain is saying ā€œShut the fuck up. You’re only 20ā€. It’s an interesting thing to think about why you are thinking something and why you believe you have a say on it.

I like when you share your thoughts/life, I enjoy reading what you type out. Please continue to share more.

@tlgains Thanks, I’m glad you enjoy reading it. I enjoy writing and being able to look back in the future and see what life was like at certain times!

GS1: 90sec rest
Row: 155x8, 185x6, 225x4
CGBP: 125x8, 145x6, 165x5
10 Leg raises
10 Burpees

Assistance: 4 rounds: 90 sec rest
10 Swiss Bar Pin Press (nose level): 85lbs
15 Dips: BWx1, Switched to Dip machine: 35x1, 45x2
20 extensions: Red Band
20 Facepull: Red band

Conditioning: Kaslu with strict log press
1st run:
5 rounds: 17 reps at 105lbs (25 burpees)
Died
2nd run (respawn):
8 rounds: 33 reps at 70lbs (40 burpees)

Decided I wanted 10 more reps to round out the 60 rep mark: 10 reps at 70lbs

Notes:

  • Swiss bar is really fun for pin press. Almost akin to a SSB squat for the upper body
  • Conditioning explanation. I realized the lightest 12’’ log was 105lbs but wanted a shot at 50 reps with it. Got to the point of realizing that shit would take like 20+ minutes, so I dropped down to the smaller 70lb log. Still a really amazing conditioning impact and glad I fought the wanting to quit entirely.
  • Got to make a brisket, burnt ends, and black magic bars for Christmas. All of this sounds like a day of infinite gains and a chance to enjoy smoking some meat
  • Having a day of heavier cheatier rows and a day of strict Dr. Mike rows seems to be the golden balance. I’m enjoying the rotation of lifts over the 3 week waves and want to keep this long term for when I’m not training for an event. I get the lat stimulus for strict rows but the cheatier rows seem to be helping with anything getting picked up from the ground
  • On the above, it’s crazy how dogmatic online fitness culture is about rows. Pendlay rows are fast and explosive for a reason
  • Looking a little fluffier (kind of was the goal to put on some mass) but could just be the lighting. I feel like an absolute beast in training though. The conditioning aspect is really shining through

@T3hPwnisher did you ever read or study much of Kierkegaard’s work? I watched a couple lectures on him and picked up ā€œEither/Orā€. It’s been interesting to say the least.

I read ā€œthe sickness unto deathā€ a while back. I like Kierkegaard’s ideas, but his writing style is far from enjoyable, haha.

Yeah that’s what I’m finding too. It’s pretty much read one paragraph and reread it two more times. Almost like a koan

Sadly, it is often the case that great thinkers are NOT great writers. It’s amazing how divergent those talents can be.

Care to elaborate on this a bit? I’ve never really played around with the Swiss bar, and I haven’t done pin press since I was competing in gear years ago, so I’m interested in your thoughts!

For sure! I used the swiss bar in place of a log z press and noticed since the weight was out in front of me, my upper back and triceps worked harder. I need to do pin press because A. it was in the program and B- my triceps are definitely the weak link in my press and the owner of the gym started telling me to do them. I used the swiss bar for it today and noticed: A) my triceps got smoked, B) I didn’t have to focus on shoulder position and could just push (like with the SSB), C) core was challenged because of the weight being in front of me, D) upper back (like in-between the scaps) was getting getting worked and I was forced to ā€œpush my head throughā€ because of the displacement and starting position of the bar.

Well damn, now it sounds like I need to start doing these! Appreciate the response, and you’ve definitely got me interested! Will be giving these a go next press day!

Let me know how it goes! I just thought of the perfect summary: ā€œMore strain, less thinkā€

That has always been a big reason I loved deadlifts. I have never really thought about my form. I walked up to a bar. I pick it up. No thought, just brute strength. Much more my style.
…. Also probably explains why I’ve failed every attempted venture into Olympic lifts

I feel that. I was talking with a girl who’s an Olympic weightlifter and she was talking about how she went to a CrossFit event and almost cried. I was like ā€œoh yeah them crossfittersā€ knowing damn well last time I did a snatch I pressed it to lockout when it got to eye level.
