Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

That’s the shitty part of college-ing in the South. UA’s job board had an offering that required using your own car and working football weekend shifts… for $7.50. You can definitely find a better place to work, and the hardware guys will be missing you within a week of it.

Yeah I’ve looked at a couple LSU jobs and just went immediately no.

Ideally I’ll find something here in the next 2 weeks and/or start to build something on the side (I think it’s cool and have wanted to do it. No idea what)

I’ve kinda wanted to get some sort of income through something I provide or make (like a side hustle). I’m just so not interested in the college party scene and that’s a lot of LSU so I’m looking for something to challenge me in a different way

Every now and then something decent comes up, but even then a few hundred people will apply by like day three of it being available lol.

I was lucky enough to get my tutoring job (sitting in an empty room and doing homework because the school doesn’t advertise the tutoring program very well) through it, but even that’s just $10.00/hour

Hell of a lot better than $8.50 while busting my balls

IMHO the entire point of working something like this at least once in your life is to quickly realize that-

  1. Most people are entitled assholes.

  2. You quickly realize that there’s a lot better things you can do with your time. Everyone has the same amount of time in a day, but some people are out there making A HELLUVA lot more than you. This is all the more apparent once you work minimum wage jobs.

Just need to figure out what your ceiling is and try to get there quick.

Like him or not, I listened to a Kevin Samuels podcast and heard him taking about needing to eat shit at a job and see what it’s like. That’s the main reason I had decided on this but now I’ve seen what it’s like! Lol

Hey dude, sorry to read about all of the recent troubles you’ve been going through. Life is strange in the way it seems to load and unload on us seemingly unexpectedly.

Regarding the job- don’t be a martyr. There isn’t one single person in this world that can stand up for you more than yourself. If you feel underpaid, you probably are. If you feel underappreciated, you probably are. Your boss has already shown he is not capable of steering the ship in the right direction even after multiple conversations from employees. I wouldn’t burn any bridges, but making your boss aware of your frustration may allow future employees of theirs not endure the same fate as you.

I will never not plug any sort of trade in situations like this. I’m in the northeast, but I know for a fact that every region is scrambling for mentally willing and physically capable help right now. Where I am, unskilled help can start around $15-20 an hour on the books, and many would likely work with your time restrictions with school. There are learning opportunities, and these will be skills you’ll be building for life. Even though its not a permanent situation for you, it can always be a fallback if times are rough later on.

I started on a roofing crew at 17 with a shitty boss and underwhelming coworkers while also taking night classes at a local college. It was the most eye opening and beneficial thing I could’ve done in my situation. It might be worth some phone calls to a few contractors to see if they’re willing to hire you part time. Roofing, siding, plumbing, communications/data, security, masonry, HVAC, electrical, painting, finishing, framing… The list goes on and on.

Good luck man

Thanks, this sounds super appealing to me. Didn’t much in the way of fixing anything growing up. Will look into it

Conditioning:
10 rounds with 100lb bag:

  • 3 Deadlifts
  • 2 clean to shoulders
  • 1 clean to press

100 pull aparts

Notes:

  • Didn’t set a timer and pushed the pace. Felt great and I was surprised at how easy the bag moved
  • Got my half day off tomorrow. Looking into other jobs but haven’t put in my two weeks yet

It’s certainly a good eye opener to work a job that you don’t like!

Notes:

  • I know the sandbag to shoulder wasn’t pretty but I’m pretty fucking proud I got it. That’s just surprising to me
  • Bodyweight stalled at 170lb. Deciding if I need to add more on before the contest

Poundstone: 44

Notes:

  • All lifts except poundstone curls done with axle
  • Didn’t get to workout in the morning because I was awoken by my burglar alarm at 3AM. In the process of me locking my bedroom door and trying to figure out what the fuck was going on, the hall light got turned on and someone was messing with the handle to my room. Freaked the fuck out, I told the alarm company to send the police and then got the text from my roommate “Hey, sorry to wake you but I opened the window to my room because it was too cold. I forgot the alarm was on”. So glad to see it wasn’t something terrible happening but disappointed to find out the police response time was 30 minutes. This tells me I might need some protection for my home. After the cops came and I told them what happen, I had that adrenaline crash and woke up at 6:30AM.
  • Really great workout today. Everything clicked. Schools back and that’s a bummer but now my mental health is better and outlook is more positive so it won’t be a hard semester life wise.

Notes:

  • Rougher day. Some knee pain and not able to focus the whole day
  • Going to drop all the volume to 3x10 instead of 5x10
  • Making the trip to the strongman gym tomorrow. Talked to the owner and he got a dude who is competing in a different weight class to come at the time I am going to help me with some of the events. While I am not going to get a membership, I will pay a good amount for drop in’s if he is willing to set stuff up like that. That is just so cool to me.
  • Sandbag to shoulder and push press video are sitting at over 1,000 views. I might start making little training highlights throughout the week. Makes me want to migrate to conjugate but we are committed to 5/3/1
  • “Strapped in Calabasas” is an amazing Yo Gotti song. Not a huge fan of him but this song stands out
  • Ass to grass squats are back and looking crisp. Have the video but here’s a picture
