Does Vasectomy Cause Low Test?

I no longer post here much, but threads like this keep me lurking. Solid.

Threads on this topic always makes me cringe. But I need to get this done sometime. Ugh.

lol, trust me, I get it. But it isn’t that bad… Not at all.

Really, it is not as bad as a needle, shape metal objects, and hot tools that burn tubes near your nuts as it seems.

Sounds fun.

You just had to go there with your last sentence, didn’t you.

How long did your balls hurt afterwards?

I’m three weeks removed from the no scalpel method and my balls still ache up into my abdomen. The epididymides also seem enlarged. I’m worried about ā€œback upā€ issues.

I had the no scapel and I only felt the ache a couple of days.

Did you have stitches with the no scalpel? I went for a consult beforehand and I know he told me it wouldn’t need stitches, but he ended up putting them in for me. I didn’t even think to ask about it as I was lying there as I had already been waiting for a long time and the only thing on my mind was to get out of there ASAP.

I think my scrotum might have tore as he was doing it. I had slight bleeding/oozing for about 10 days and there is a 1/4" scar that tees off. I don’t think that has anything to do with the testicular pain I still have, but I guess it’s worth noting.

I was under for mine. I woke up with a couple of stitches and was pissed, because everything I read said there wouldn’t be any and that there’d just be a tiny hole.
I told the doc that at my follow up, and he said if I could show him something that said that it would be free. He was joking. I had already printed about 20 pages of stuff, so I whipped it out. At the end of the appointment I just walked by the front desk and told him the doctor said it was free, and never paid the rest of my balance.

Watch out for the Repo man.

I literally just got this done two weeks ago.

Got it done early Friday morning. Spent the weekend at home watching movies. Monday, I took the train into work and walked from the station to my office, about +1 mile, carrying a heavy backpack. Ugh, bad move. By the following weekend I was ok to walk around the mall and go apple picking with my kids…would end up icing it down at night and taking Advil. Not in pain, but definitely sore.

Saw doc a week later for a follow-up, said I was healing just fine. By the second week, still felt a little something was off down there but slowly got back to normal and then I just woke up one morning feeling brand new. Got it on with the wife and was all good. Still need to get a sperm test in a few weeks to make sure it’s a done deal down there.

My advice, don’t do too much in the first week. Take it easy week 2. Wearing the support strap definitely helps.

It was a good month before I could go to town and let them slap on my wife’s ass, but I was doing normal everyday life shit 10-14 days after.

The stomach ache too a while to go away, don’t remember how long, but my shit was tender forever. I figured it was just as much in my head as physical.

Here’s a twist. I was two weeks into a new duty station in the Navy, and some chief I had known barely a week asked what I thought about him getting this surgery. Jeez. He was undecided, he said his wife was pushing it, and they had 2 or 3 kids. Not being comfortable with the topic (this is mid 70s, and to this day I remain uncomfortable with it) I just said it was a big step that I personally wouldn’t take. About two weeks after he had the surgery his wife walked out on him.

I had a friend years ago also have this surgery and he had it reversed in his 40s for a second family. He would screw anything that moves.

Many years later my 40 something law partner was out of the office for a ā€œprocedureā€ that he later implied was this surgery; his wife is knockout, two equally attractive girls, and he’s as least as aggressive as ever. So, I agree if it’s for the right reasons and you’re comfortable with it…just make sure there isn’t a pushy woman involved.

Guess I don’t feel so bad after reading this and beans response. Post-vasectomy pain was just my biggest concern before having it done. I was actually on my feet walking around most of the next day. The first day sucked but the initial pain went away rather quickly. I did an upper body work out within a week. I’m still afraid to do anything lower body wise or running due to the lingering tenderness, but hopefully that will clear up in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for everyone’s input to this thread, I just had this done yesterday. So far the pain hasn’t really been much of anything at all, like the residual effects of taking a shot in the nuts.

One question I have which my doctor’s office was not able to answer sufficiently is how long until you could go all out in the gym? When I asked my doctor’s office they asked what I meant by ā€œall outā€ and I said routinely lifting 300 and 400+ lbs for reps. They were really unsure but settled on at least a month before going that heavy. What are others’ experience with regard to this situation?

Well… It can.

Lemme 'splain. I got snipped in 1998. Was done having kids. Fast forward to 2012. I decided to get it reversed because I was with a woman and we wanted kids. This costs a ton and is never covered by insurance. I had never had much of an issue with Test, but not too long afterwards my T levels tanked (under 300). Ended up going on Clomid (an artificial estrogen) to raise it (that worked and I’m still on it 2 years later and Test levels are 850 - 900. Wahoo!) So I am doing fine.

What happened was that sometimes the vas deferens leak after being cut and this in turn causes an autoimmune reaction. My urologist says he sees a pretty fair number of men who have had a vasectomy and develop issues 10 or 15 years on with T levels. The widely reported drop in Western European and N. American T levels does parallel the rise of the vasectomy, so something is going on.

Oh and they do cut the vas deferens which includes the direct connection between your nuts and the rest of the reproductive system. Some guys are wired so they quit working, or they get PVPS (post-vasectomy pain syndrome). On one of the boards I was reading, a fair number of the guys had to have their nuts removed due to orchitis. Yikes! I was ok, but my urologist also said he treats a lot of guys who get it and then everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Officially this is a non-issue (though I read some place that the guideline was changing when telling men of this risk.) He thinks that something like 3% of men have a bad response initially and up to 15% have long term serious issues from a vasectomy.

FWIW I am really wouldn’t advise anyone to get a vasectomy.

So if you had it, yes, Test levels might be going haywire, especially if it has been several years.

A few points:

The autoimmune reaction is towards a man’s sperm, not T production. The body sees his own sperm as a foreign intruder and attacks the sperm as it’s produced. This is one of the reasons why vasectomies may not be reversible; it’s not as easy as simply reattaching the tubes.

Second, the issues that manifest themselves 10-15 years later can very well be explained because now the man is 10-15 years older. For the sake of arguement, if the average age of someone getting a vasectomy is 38, is it unreasonable to think that if they were to have issues with T production that they would occur in a man’s early 50s?

Lastly, the reduction in T production parallels the rise in lots of things: cell phone usage, number of computers in the home, Jay Cutler interceptions, kale intake, etc. Correlation is not causation.

No one has mentioned the most important thing. You can now go up to a girl and say ā€œWant to see my vasectomy scar?ā€

I’m going to resurrect this thread as I’m scheduled to have this procedure done next month. The consult was lightning fast. Doc scribbled a pic of a sac with tubes and drew some sperm and the letter ā€œTā€. Gave a quick spiel about it not affecting T and whatever. Spent all of about 5-10 minutes with him. I chalked this up to efficient office stuff and getting to the next patient mores than unprofessional. He has around 30 years experience, if that means anything.

Anyway, I wanted to revisit the Low T/hypogonadism topic and see whether or not any of you have experienced anything like this person’s experience described on the web page below. I know I probably shouldn’t be rummaging around the web for this stuff as you can pretty much find the answer you WANT to find, good or bad.

I have also read a few things about vasectomies interfering with blood flow to the testicles, hampering their function.

So, anyone experience what this particular person has experienced? Known anyone who has? Do I just have pre-game jitters?

See the ā€œnegativesā€ section a few paragraphs down.
