Do You Hide It?

My workmates seem cool about me keeping protein powder on the shelves at work, always snacking, and even disappearing for 45 minutes from my desk and coming back sweaty (using the gym), then downing a shake.

They know I play rugby too so don’t appear shocked by me coming to work on Mondays with cuts and bruises on my shaved head.

Of course they are Japanese. This nation is by and large fit and into sports, with virtually no obese people. The average person eats reasonably healthily. Not too many people with any decent muscle though.

I don’t give out unsolicited training or nutritional advice but if a co-worker asks me something I am only too happy to help. Still, that doesn’t mean they will listen, like the guy at work who works out with 3kg dumbells every night for 30 minutes, but has made no progress except for in the first month. Duh…

I’m not really surprised at that Scotty. I’m not a career FF like yourself but I’m pursuing it, and the houses I’ve been to that sit and eat together don’t seem to have much slack for that. I’ve only seen a few that have the “your on your own” mentality. Its something that actually worries me. Don’t wanna be the odd man out ya know…
Whoa!! I never thought about that. I asumed that all the other guys would be glad they have a big, powerful bodybuilder in their ranks.

I start FF academy in 3 weeks, and I have to say that this is the only dissapointing facet I’ve heard of yet.

At my last workplace, I would always get “Why do you eat so much?”, or “Didn’t you just eat 2 hours ago?”. I would tell them that I was trying to gain weight. Then they respond “Oh, but you’re fine…you don’t need to gain anymore. Why do you want to get so big?” The thing is I never know what to say to that. All I know is that I want to get a lot bigger.

What do you guys say when you’re asked “Why do you want to get big?”

The people I work with are used to me eatiing all the time and drinking odd shakes. People ask me why I want to get bigger and all I can think of is “Why Not.” I gave up a long time ago caring what other people think of my eating habits.

Everyone knows I’m a meathead and I’m not ashamed of what I am. I’d say about 50% of my t-shirts are gym related (AAU Powerlifting, Bench Press Contest, Biotest etc…) so that sorta gives it away.

I go to a community college and no one has given me shit about my eating habits yet. I work as a doorman at a bar and most of the other guys are a lot bigger but fatter and they generally ask me about the strongman workouts I go to on sundays that keep me from staying out for late night.

Guys at the gym have seen me put on 40+ lbs in the past year and will ask me for advice. Generally I direct them to T-Nation and I have made a few converts. Other than that, people don’t bother me too much.

“Why would I want to be small?”

or

“To lift heavier weights.”

I work in the grocery dept of a Walmart-wannabe company in New Zealand. This place have all sort of food literally surround poeple - some cubicles are not seperated by screens but by food samples’ cupboards.

This is what happened to me at work:

 1. A colleague mocked me by asking me whether I would demage my kidney by having too much protein. I replied by saying “this is why I am having annual leave next week, not because I am having a holiday, but to go to China to buy a kidney from executed prisoner so I can have my 15th kidney replacement.”

 2. The buyer of health products asked me what my Metabolic Drive tasted like and said it looked “yuck”. I replied “it tastes like shit, just a bit better than Aussie Bodies and Body For Life.” (You can tell Aussie Bodies and BFL are her lines, can’t you?)

(Of course, Metebolic Drive is far from tasting like shit.)

 1. Another colleague asked me whether it was protein when I was making a protein shake and I said “yes”. Then, believe it or not, she asked me what’s in it. I replied “protein”.

So no, I don’t hide my eating habit and would mock back whoever trying to mock. I am not ashamed of what I do, rather those who eat the food samples from the dept all day should be ashamed of themseleves.

I am from Amsterdam but I have been in the US since 1995, I live in MD. But you are correct to note that the culture is not the same, very different actually, much more liberal and open to things people here at times dont understand and therefore reject.

AA doesn’t get shit from people because he walks the walk; he looks like a heavywieght competitive bodybuilder.

I don’t look like that (yet), so I catch some flak from the civilians I asociate with. I’ve made phonomenal gains during my training life and people who’ve known me for some time never give me flak, in fact they usually ask for guidance, tips, etc…

But if you only look somewhat more muscular than average, and are lugging Tupperwere around and eating at odd times, then you simply look like a “health freak” to the average joe/joel.

In that case it’s understandable why they mock your eating habits.

AA also lives in Amsterdam so I am not sure whether the culture is exactly like it is here. Plus, he’s worked the same job for 8 years.

I think I qualify as more than “somewhat more muscular than average” and I still get comments. Most people aren’t even trying to be rude or anything, they just think it is original to make the same jokes I’ve heard 500 times already. “You’re looking kind of small there…better get to the gym” HA!! Haven’t heard that one! How original!

I don’t get anyone actually mocking my eating habits. I just get tired of the random questions over and over as every time they see a protein shake it is time to have a discussion about it.

“Is that chocolate milk?”

“No, bitch. It wasn’t chocolate milk yesterday, the day before that or the other 365 days you asked that damn question.”
To the untrained individual, eating more frequently than the average person is simply “showing off.”

You’re different… what do you expect?

Re: Eating sweetpotatoes and chicken in a 10:00 meeting - that’s ridiculous and unprofessional. Why would your job let you get away with that? Do other members order a steak?

I’m sure eating donuts, muffins, cookies, prepared sandwiches, soda and coffee on the other hand is very professional…

So, you can only eat the food provided, and not bring your own?

Here’s something I’m noticing. If someone asks a question to pertaining to you…they’re usually looking to argue or give themselves an excuse for what they do no matter what you say. For that I go into as little detail as possible and give them nothing to work with.

“How can you stand to eat vegetables out of the bag like that?”

They make me feel good.

“You don’t want some of this?”

I’m not hungry. I just ate. / I’m getting full with what I have.

When people ask me a question about how they improve their diet/fitness, they’re actually curious. They probably won’t follow through, but they’re sincere in that moment.

Are you joking?

Just on a side note, I’m really tired of eating food being some mystical event in society that has to be partaken in at the exact same time by everyone in a given area. The whole idea just strikes me as very primitive.

It’s food. It’s everywhere now. It’s no big deal.

Who the fuck are you to call me unprofessional? And if you think that is ridiculous you have obviously never been that serious about lifting before.

Is it the 10am that offends you? Boo fucking hoo, I gotta eat, would it have been ok for me to bring in a pop tart? Would it have been ok for me to brown bag my shit during lunch meetings? Wtf? Do I give people shit for bringing in their coffee and morning bagel? The water is my coffee and the food is my bagel.

I have a feeling you carry more than the minimum requirement of “flare.”

I eat in meetings all of the time. I wasn’t aware it was so unprofessional.

Where are your stats? Until you’re bigger than Amersterdam Animal, shut the fuck up.

I ran into the same problem in high school. I was 6’3" and around 225 and I can’t count how many times strangers tried to provoke me into a fight in the most random places because of my size. Or so I assumed. Anyway, don’t worry as it should stop in a few years. Or that was my experience and I’m bigger now than I was then…

Dude, at 6 '4.5 and 285 there at times was still some drunk asshole who thought he could take me. There is this is one bar/lounge I got to a lot and I know everyone there so I am not trying to start anything. And even the guy’s boys are usually looking at him as if he is crazy. I guess my point is that it will continue to happen. As long as they dont put there hands on me or say some really outrageous shit, I just laugh it off.

No, I don’t hide it.

I am a police officer and work as a school resource officer at a high school with about 1600 students.

Being a bodybuilder/powerlifter helps me a great deal in my role and in developing a rapport with the students.

I get the opportunity to help them with nutrition, supplement and training questions which helps me give something back to the sport that has given me so much.

I do get grief from the staff that are always trying to lose weight when I am a 40 year old at 5’4" weighing 180 and trying to reach the 200 mark!
