Do You Hide It?

Yeah, true, it does still happen. There’s always some idiot out there trying to prove something. But, I’d say that in comparison to my high school and early college years, the situations are quite infrequent. I used to get it almost anywhere, then it was mostly bars and parties, now it’d most likely be in DFW traffic. hahah

Suddenly, you aren’t as cool as I once thought you were. You’re just another dude it the states now.

Ok. Here’s the golden question. Do you hide it from your gf or a girl you’d like to start dating? I’ve had this discussion with my friend and he says, “fuck em, i’m doing whatever i want.” Girls, in general, are stupid when it comes to nutrition and all the ones i know (college girls) eat like total shit or they don’t eat at all. They don’t correlate a lean muscular body with the food that went into that body. I refuse to take a baggy of chicken and walnuts out on a date so i can get my cals in. But on the other hand, starving myself just to avoid criticism also bothers me. I’d love to hear how others handle this.

No man! Don’t give in. I am very open with my avid interest and dedication to the gym. If I am not, well it won’t take long at all for them to find out for themselves when they go out with me to eat or see me whip out some food as we talk.

If they don’t like it, fuck em! But if you hide it, then it’ll only make you feel worse about yourself because you don’t feel like people can accept you with lifting being a part of your identity. There are alot of people on campus and if people won’t accept your lifestyle even if they are just friends, then let em go.

As a side note, I have found that all my friends admire me for what I do as they see the results of my habits. They think I’m pretty crazy for what I do but in a good way. I have received all comments as positive.

And for about girls, I find that they are very attracted to the idea that you don’t just give in to peer pressure and that you know who you are and aren’t ashamed about it. They end up usually just being curious about it and admire the dedication involved.

I find most girls like it. There’s something comforting to them in knowing I’ll never, ever, try to take them out to mcdonalds on a date;)

Just a question to anyone who might know…is it easy to get your meals in as a elementary teacher? I figure it is, since I can probably keep a fridge next to my desk, and there are short enough little breaks between classes, along with giving them quiet time in class to do work, and then i can eat also. Is this true?

For my “do you hit it” answer, no i do not. I don’t flaunt it, but if I have to eat, i eat. i eat a can of tuna, a cup of dry oats, and a apple in my evening class. i just make sure not to look at anyone that looks like they’re looking my way, and try and make it as passive looking as possible. everyone else is eating their junk food, so i can eat my food. everytime my roommates have girls over, they’re always like “so what meal is it now?!” it’s kind of funny actually. i don’t really mind it.
How long is your school day? Mine’s a little under 7 hours, so I eat before school, shake two hours later, lunch, another shake, then you’re home.

Another good idea (especially if you’re bulking) is peanuts. Little bag of 'em in between shakes and meals. 170 extra calories, plus they’re so darn salty, you get all your water in without having to drink when you’re not thirsty.

This hasn’t even been an issue since I started working at home. There are comments when I get lean, as I will be in a couple of months. I am not really that big 5’11", about 200 when lean, but if you put those numbers with a 33" waist, it is obvious that you work out.

Mostly I get the same kind of questions that I get about my business (I have a small internet company) - “What did you do to make that happen / succeed at that?”

I think there is only one answer, as they are asking for free info that it took me years to learn.

“I make about 50.00 an hour. But I’ll sell you 30 minutes for 20.00. We can talk about it, and I will answer every question you have in detail. If you can’t even pony up 20.00, then you aren’t interested enough.”

I’ve never had someone pay up.

This thread is really interesting. I think that AA has a great approach. Getting others involved is what its all about.

I also think that a lot of you guys need to lighten up a bit. I also used to get annoyed frustrated with others who didn’t understand my new found habits. But then I realised that most other people are just curious/ fascinated with this lifestyle; I know I was when I first started out.

I know that some people like to criticize these habits, but I think that vilifying them is not the way to go. If people start asking me questions (even in an abrasive manner) I try to answer in a light hearted or humerous way. If they are really trying to have a dig, they normally don’t know what to do. These sorts of people are what we call ‘bullies’ and back down if you don’t react.

Its obviously easier with people that know you better. They may think you’re crazy, but if its getting too much I just rib them back about something that I know frustrates them. I think they’re just jealous, but thats their own issue.

In all I think that we shouldn’t take it to heart, other people aren’t normally out looking to piss people off. If they are they aren’t worth hanging around with anyway. Just ignore them and get on with it.

I blame this on Bob Sapp…now it seems like every asshole who has taken an mma seminar, or even just watched a couple mma bouts, seems to think that a guy with big muscles can’t necessarily beat their ass.

One idiot at the gym I workout at tested this theory a few months ago. I’m going to seem like a bit of a jackass for explaining this, but oh well.

I was trying to walk to the water fountain and there was a group of guys walking 3 wide and taking up most of the walk way, I moved all the way to the wall and was so close that my shoulder was actually brushing the wall as I walked…wasn’t far enough apparently because the guy dipped his shoulder into me…I was a bit shocked that someone could be so rude in the first place, but also that he could do it to a guy that much bigger than him(I’d estimate he was a buck-seventy, tops)

I guess he was a bit emboldened by the fact that he had 2 friends with him…unfortunately for him, all the biggest guys in the gym tend to know each other and the moment his friends tried to jump in they all got pushed back…he got a quick lesson in jiu-jitsu from a guy he probably thought was unwieldy or non-functional at best. He’s lucky I was feeling good at the time because I really could’ve hurt that fool, but I just held him down in a triangle arm choke until he stopped struggling…I was pretty tempted to pass him out to see if he was one of those guys who pisses themselves when they get choked out. Haven’t seen a single one of those fools around the gym since.

Today I was told by someone “You used to be big, now you’re just ridiculously big. Everytime I see you you get bigger”. Nothing better than a comment like that to brighten an otherwise dull day.

How do you make a shake in school?

Just so I can grab your attention before you wonder off, let me sum up the essence of this post:

WE NEED THEIR BULLS**T!!

I can totally empathise with all who have contributed to this thread, having personally been involved in a whole load of different academic and working environments. And yes, i do feel it is a sad state of affairs that most of us should have to ‘hide’ this aspect of our lives, or at the very least keep it in the shade…but, having read all the posts last night I then got thinking about the whole issue today, and I think maybe, just maybe, it is the previously described behaviour from the ‘Average Joe’ that actually drives us on…they are the fuel to our fire.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we all go to the gym throwing around weights in a rage at society’s conformity. No, not at all. While some may chose that as their motivation, what I am getting at is this: I think the vast majority of us, if we are truly honest with ourselves, NEED these people. We need society ‘marginalising’ us, if you will. The stark contrast between us and them is what actually drives us to continue to do what we love. This difference emphasises OUR PASSION.

Furthermore, I would say that the afforementioned jibes/comments etc are all part of the ‘deal’, a ‘deal’ i reckon is pretty fair. Let me elaborate. In all walks of life, people discriminate, thats just a fact, Im not going to analyse it, its far beyond the confines of this thread (and my intellect). But basically, what im saying is that the comments we receive are a fair trade off for what we do. i.e Yes, we do have to put up with st, but I’d argue that we need some of this st to keep us going, to keep us going back to the gym, to keep us striving for improvement.

Ok, ill leave it there. I fear my argument/point isn’t quite as lucid here as it was earlier this afternoon in my head, on the bus journey, but anyway, whether you agree or disagree, hopefully you’ll see what Im saying:

Don’t get hung up on these people- we may actually need them more than we realise!!

I don’t. Make 'em up the night before, put 'em in the fridge, then throw 'em in my cooler.

(Don’t know if everyone else feels his way, but an ice-cold protein shake just tastes better and goes down easier to me.)

At my last workplace, I would always get “Why do you eat so much?”, or “Didn’t you just eat 2 hours ago?”. I would tell them that I was trying to gain weight. Then they respond “Oh, but you’re fine…you don’t need to gain anymore. Why do you want to get so big?” The thing is I never know what to say to that. All I know is that I want to get a lot bigger.

What do you guys say when you’re asked “Why do you want to get big?”
I’ve got long hair, so the answer is something like: “because I want to look like the viking that I am”

and/or

“you know Conan the Barbarian? Yeah…”

That usually gets people’s attention. It turns into a big joke about my “pillaging” heritage, and from there we are cool.

Only problem is that right now I’m more concerned with weight class than I was a while ago, so not gaining as much :frowning:

I’m generally really easy going, so I’m ok with people asking why I’m eating AGAIN. We all have fun and joke at each other’s (minimal) expense. But then, I’m young and in college, so there’s not so much PC crap.

I generally tell them it’s because I have to keep my weight up or I’ll start dropping like a rock. Or, see my above post.

If somebody starts mocking me, I have ready retorts. Or just grin smugly, that always makes them feel better.

Anyway, people who know my goals are just having fun, so that’s what I do in return. If they’ve known me long enough to see where I’ve come from, I end up being asked for advice. Otherwise not, b/c I’m not really that overly big (like AA or Prof).

mauser

that was possibly the sexiest post I’ve read by a chick here. From one TA to another, keep on rockin.

The more I read your posts, the more I really love your attitude. You managed to change your workplace for the better. Seems to be a theme of yours huh?

Great Coolidge quote btw. One of my favs.

Due to my scheduling everyday, I leave my place early in the morning and return at night.
I go from work, straight to class, so I carry around a lunch cooler. People definitely don’t understand why I don’t just choose one of the cafes on campus (aside from nutritionally, economically it makes no sense with the amount of food I eat, but the crowd adorned in Gucci and Armani Exchange from head to toe doesn’t get it). I get a kick out of it all really, I figure people will probably eventually get used to seeing me always with my backpack and cooler in hand.

NO, I don’t hide it. The iron was there before them, and it will be there after them. If they’re not at least accepting of it, I’m not going to bother. I want someone I can have adventures with, not somebody who’s too dainty or girly to be physically active.

On the other hand, I would never take meals with me on a date. That’s just…no. The only goal is to have fun with the person. Eat before going out, or eat at a restaurant with them. Or make it a cheat meal and have “regular” snacks at the movie theater/park/baseball diamond/pool hall/wherever.

Ok, enough posts in a row by me. Gotta get something done…

To the guy who choked the dude at the gym, I think it is very funny that most people think we are slow.

My friends do MMA and they try to hit me and their eyes get huge when I block it and hit them.Which gets followed up with “You can’t be faster then me,you’re 2x my size!”,I love it.

When they ask why I wanna get bigger I tell them “Why would I wanna look like you?”
