Do You Feel Symmetrical?

No this isn’t about bodybuilding.

Hoping to hear other people weigh in on this. Here’s what I’m wondering:

When you flex your lower back for example, does it feel the same on both sides of your body? Do you feel the same muscles flexing? Is the tension roughly equal? Do you feel the same pressure applied to the same areas?

What about for other muscles?

My lower back feels completely different on the left than the right. Almost like the muscles aren’t even the same. My right shoulder and right bicep are like that as well to a lesser degree. They don’t hurt (usually), but they just feel different than the other side.

It’s the places where I had injuries. Some to the left side of my lower back, one to my right shoulder, and one to my right bicep. These have been anywhere from months ago to many years ago. There’s no pain, but the places that got injured have never, ever felt the same as the other, uninjured side. Is that just sort of how it works?

Just curious.

Absoulutely not. I’m all fucked up. Lower left back is bigger, then upper right back is bigger. Left pec is bigger right arm is bigger. Injuries made me all awkward shaped from compensation.

Yep. For a while my left pec was bigger than the right but after clearing up some rotator cuff issues in my right supraspinitus and fixing up some general tightness in that area the pecs are back to being about the same size.

Physique wise, my arms are asymmetrical as fuck (triceps are the same, huge difference in bicep size though), performance wise my sides are about the same as long as I am healthy.

Yeah dude, I am also very asymmetrical. My clavicles are two different lengths due to a break. Traps are different shapes. Right pec is bigger than left. Left lower back is bigger than right. Right Leg bigger than left. Luckily I am in no pain:) I am self conscious about it though

Naw man. Masturbation’s got my symmmetry all kindza fucked up.

Well it is my right arm that’s had 2 injuries. Left arm is right as rain. Hmm…

What a great question chris

NO, I am not symmetrical at ALL.

My left knee caves when I squat and my right one stands firm.
I also cannot activiate my left glute. HMM, connection?!
More strangeness in my left leg when I do like leg curls or whatever. My left leg wont stay in the same position as my right. I can’t explain it, but it’s weird.

My left lat also doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as strong as my right. I can’t really activiate it either.

My left half just sucks bascially.

-My right leg is stronger than my left for leg extensions
-My left leg is stronger than my right for leg curls
-I have flat feet (one if flatter than the other, I can’t remember which)
-My right trap is set up higher than my left, which may be due to my right shoulder being more forward rotated than the left
-I can’t hear as well out my left hear as I can my right

These things used to not really bother me, but my injuries have caught up with me lately and I am now paying the price.

If I could go back a couple years I would not neglect addressing it like I did.

VTB- how would you address these if you could go back? More mobility work, work the weaker sides more?

my left ball hangs lower than my right…

actually in all seriousness I think everyone dominate side is probably larger than their non dominate

Until I had my RC issues fixed, I was the opposite. My offside had bigger arm and chest and shoulder and my dominant side gave out on presses before the offside. After everything was cleared up the size and strength differential fixed itself in a few months.

Yeah I would probably actually stretch and foam roll like I know I am supposed to, instead of just going into the gym, lifting weights, and leaving. I dunno if it would have prevented it all or not, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have hurt.

I probably wouldn’t work the weaker “sides” more (as in, more left work than right), but I would focus more on the antagonists for the problem areas. For example, more muscle work on the lower back antagonists (abs and hamstrings) to keep that region more balanced. Same for upper back/rear delt/rhomboids work for the shoulders.

I also seem to have less back problems when I am keeping my cardio up. I imagine this is just from all the extra leg movement keeping things loose and active down there.

Seems like the answer is always more mobility work and cardio… For fuck’s sake why can’t it ever be bench press and beer?

I have monster triceps and little baby biceps. The strength is where it should be but they are just small. That and idk if my right arm is bigger than my left or my tattoo just makes it look that way.

I got a lot of those. Going to a chiropractor to fix them. Got scoliosis too though, which is the main cause of my imbalances.

One thing I am amazed at is bodybuilders perfectly symmetrical backs. Must be genetic
