Dmaddox and Me

I believe there is nothing I can say to change anyone’s mind. It is only the Holy Spirit that can do that.

I am like jbpick…I am Southern Baptist, but I do not believe 100% of what the SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) brings out. IMO they are one of the closest to what the Bible actually says. The SBC has lightened up a lot on the “you can not do…” teaching. More allow the Holy Spirit to tell you what is right and wrong based on the scriptures.

PM’s no longer work. You can look me up on Google+ if you want. Damon Maddox in Houston.

Thanks, D. I’m not on G+, and my hubs would clip my wings if I started friending guys from the internet in real life when we’re not couple friends. Understandable. I am facebook friends with a few people from here. Now I can totally stalk Derek.

About listening to the spirit, I agree. You might like this story. A relative of mine was raised LDS, but has married a Baptist who is a really good guy. They live in Mexico, and so they often attend a non-denominational Christian church down there together, since the local LDS services are in Spanish. Anyway, the ex-pats who run this little church do amazing things to help the poor communities in Baja. Lots of selfless and charitable people. OK, so she came up to visit not long ago and was telling me that I might be surprised, but she really “feels the spirit” in that little non-denominational church. I wasn’t surprised a bit. Anytime you get some good people gathered together trying to serve as Christ would do, the spirit will be there.

Similarly, when you get people who sincerely want to talk and understand, that’s a whole different thing than running down someone’s religion or 'Bible bashing" with them. Believe me, struggling over some of this stuff has been a very humbling experience. Thanks for taking the time, and my best to you and your family.

Internet high five to Powerpuff.
I was scared to see what you were going to put in here. I was pleasantly surprised.
Cool. High five Super Saiyan.

This church in Baja isn’t run by a man and his wife, man named Jeff being about 5’4" with about 5 kids is it?

Reason I ask, My old youth minister was in Guadalupe, and going around Baja opening churches the last I heard of him.

It’s different when they are out of state and they are the 5%…they have to adapt and fit in because they are the weird ones to other people.

Here, you will never meet a more judgemental group of people than Utah Mormons…easy when you are the 95%.

Lama,

Why did I think you were married? Maybe you put a pic up once of a GF who was doing OLY lifts?

Anyway, I hate to hear about experiences like yours, where people are too insular or downright unfriendly, and I don’t doubt it happens. Some people seem to think that belonging to a particular church makes them a superior person, and of course, it may just as easily make them into a judgmental hypocrite if they aren’t careful.

A lot of LDS people have their whole social life wrapped up in family and church. And of course, when there is a thing about premarital sex and marrying within one’s faith, any LDS dad is going to be protective. Having you dating their daughter is going to be worrying, no offense intended. Still, you’ll find good and bad in every group. I hope you run across some of the normal, nice, non-fanatical types too. I swear they are out there, even in Utah. My best to you.

If you want to talk religion, I’d be very interested to know what it was like to grow up Mennonite.

Haha nope not married, still with the same girl tho.

And I have found many open minded Mormons, just not nearly as many as growing up in California.

Getting older I totally get the protectiveness of fathers, just not the rudeness shown here…but that is neither here nor there. My only real point is, they feel empowered to make you conform to their beliefs because they are the overwhelming majority in the Utah/Idaho area.

I would be happy to talk religious stuff anytime you like.
